California Apricot Orange Circle HCC/AOS Speaker Notes The speaker for this month is our good friend Jeff Trimble, who will speak on the 6 th of February on Cymbidium tigrinum culture, history, and recent trends in hybridization. For those that don t know, Cym. tigrinum is a delightful clumping miniature cymbidium with a unique inflorescence style and a beautifully different form of flower. Jeff's been growing orchids for over thirty years. His first plants were Cymbidiums from his mom's front porch. He joined the Santa Clara Valley group in 1975 when we held our show at the Wells Fargo bank in Willow Glen. He has made several crosses and has one named after him: Miltoniopsis Jeff Trimble. He currently grows mostly Cymbidiums in his back yard. he is President of the Gold Coast Cymbidium Growers group and an Associate Judge in the Cymbidium Society of America. Due to popular opinion, the board has elected to begin an Ask the Expert Corner to help people become better growers. Each month from 7:15-7:30 prior to the meeting, ask questions about any aspect of your orchid growing: why is your plant dying? What kind of fertilizer should I use? Is my potting mix ok? Answers to all these questions will help you fulfill parts of the Dance Card for 2008 (get your new one from the website), as will being the expert. Are any of you ready to step up? You don t have to be an expert but basic orchid knowledge is necessary. You can present about any topic or just lead a discussion. Join paph expert Rick Barry for this month s discussion. Rick does a wonderful job of growing a range of species indoors under lights, so, if you re not quite ready to make the jump to a greenhouse but want to do better growing indoors, come see Rick for some good help!! This view of an apparently notvery-often photographed species begins to show the characteristic semi-pendulous inflorescence, wide leaves and rotund little pseudobulbs, and interesting flower shape. 1

2 Other News If you are not getting your newsletter via , please be sure to give your currently correct address to Ed Nazzal, me pictures of them! Remember that including your images in the newsletter fulfils one of the items on the Dance Card. All plants brought for sale by members must be properly labeled, disease free, and priced in even dollar amounts. Ten percent of the sale price goes to the club treasurer, Marvin Bell, before you leave. We rely on the honor system. Thank you to those abiding by this rule; those who are not will have plant sales privileges revoked. Membership dues should be paid at the February meeting to continue to reap the benefits of our society. The board has decided that due to increased costs of speakers and other events to increase dues to $20.00 for members receiving the newsletter electronically, and $25.00 for members receiving the newsletter by regular mail. These dues increases, while unfortunate, reflect the growing cost associated with mailing lengthy newsletters. We encourage all members to try to use where possible. Please remember that non-members may not enter or sell plants in our 57 th Annual SCVOS Show and Sale in late March, or participate in the Bus Tour in the summer. Newsletters will be cut off in April for those whose membership has not been promptly renewed. Renew today and enjoy the benefits of the SCVOS: helping people become better growers!! Stone Lovely x Paph. Emerald Sea. Dave Smitt took some wonderful pix of the plant table and of our speaker Dennis Olivas last month. I think this is a wonderful idea big thanks to Bruce in November and Dave in January for helping out in this regard. Other pictures submitted this month were from Rick Barry and Sylvia Grossman really enjoy looking at the plants from the San Francisco Orchid Society s show and tell tables in their newsletter having that sort of show in ours would really be great, especially as we have so many fantastic growers. I m also sure there are those of you out there who grow beautiful plants, and are afraid of their size (Cym. growers) or the cold (Catt. growers) to bring them in each month; showing them off in the newsletter would be a great way for us to see them!! Please Paph. Peachie (or is it Frostlight I can t remember) from Peter Brown. These highly awarded greges are characterized by beautiful harvest-tone flowers with tinges of orange and yellow with a big purple dorsal; Peter will have to help with the name; Peachie is Betty Bracey x Hellas and Frostlight is Stoke Poges x Gigi. There is so much history in these plants; both were registered in the early 1960s and have stood the test of time as important breeding plants today. 2

I like the orange in it, a carryover from the Terri Jarvi parent. Another unfortunately nameless Cymbidium, this one from Manuel Sagisi. What a beautiful peloric!! This plant brought up all kinds of discussion about problems and benefits of mericloning; this plant is a mericlone mutation from an otherwise pretty typical blush pink Cymbidium. What a drastic improvement this clone is. Thanks to Manuel for bringing it in!! As plant photography goes, I can t emphasize enough the necessity of including pictures of the labels with the pictures of the plants. It is so important to know the genetic heritage of the plants in question I m so picky I have to know the names of the plants A beautiful big yellow Cymbidium, part of speaker Dennis Olivas presentation on hybridization. This poor flower had its pollenia removed to cross with a very well-formed red. Full oranges? That s every Cym. hybridizer s dream!! Good luck Dennis!! Sorry I didn t get the grex of this Dennis promised to give us some flasks of this cross for us all to grow up. I think a very interesting competition would be to give out uniform seedlings of a grex and see who can flower it first. Of course we d have to have some separation of categories like we do for the show, but by making a competition out of it, we might get a chance to see a good variety of the progeny of a given cross. Can you imagine what the progeny of this one might be? All types of colors, and forms from the full, round, cuppy form of the red parent to the open form of this one. Exciting!! Dennis explaining how orchid babies are made racy stuff really!! Here he s showing how different types of orchids have different arrangements of staminode and pollenia to make sure that insects that enter the lip leave with a packet of pollen to pass on to the next flower they visit. Everything from moveable lips to launched pollen to pouches with defined exits characterize the orchid flower. Such evolution at work!! 3

4 A man and his orchids Dennis holds out the prize, a sticky pollenium ripe for placement on some unsuspecting new plant. And in nine months? New babies, millions of them if conditions are correct. A big thanks to Dennis for such an interesting and entertaining presentation. Exceptional work!! Future Speakers March 5 th : Fred Shull Fred Shull probably has the best collection of Cattleyas in the Bay Area. He s been all over South and Central America to collect them and to select from the best native lines in greenhouses all over the world. A special favorite for Fred, and for many growers in this area, is Laelia purpurata, whose numerous varieties may be grown outside in San Jose with some protection from winter rain. Fred s collection of this species is exquisite, but some of the varieties he ll show are unbelievable. Come see what the best grower of this species in the area has to say about growing and displaying this beautiful species. Are you having difficulty with a certain genus? Need some help? Have a look at the AOS Orchid Care Sheets linked from the SCVOS Website at: The SCVOS: Helping You to Become a Better Grower Sylvia Grossman s Lc. Koolau King, originally from Frank Fordyce. Look at the beautiful colors of this cocktail orchid, with flowers just large enough to be stunning when pinned on that little black dress. McClellan s was famous for this style of plant for a time, and Frank took his strains from McClellan s and continued them in his own business. How lucky for Sylvia to have gotten a piece at his going-out-of business sale a few years ago!! Please keep your images coming. Lots of pictures helps people to learn about different types of orchids. In addition, your work can too become a valuable part of the tradition of the SCVOS: helping people become better growers. Recent and Upcoming Events Kate and I have had some real fun at the shows that have already occurred this year. Peninsula Orchid Society s show was excellent as usual, with a huge number of awards to plants especially from the Golden gate Orchids display. I particularly enjoyed the Lycaste skinneri, which may be seen in the awarded plants section below. I get the feeling not many people grow Lyc. skinneri around here It certainly is beautiful but the one at POS fell apart pretty quickly in the low humidity. By the time we judged it, I would say it was probably 2-4 points lower than it was when it came in, no more than a few hours before. Other plants of note were a very interesting Paph. Macabre with intensely dark color and a very interesting white margin around the petals. It won an AD from the CSA an award recognizing some unjudgeable distinction that a plant has. I ll try to find a picture of it somewhere and include it in a future newsletter. Golden Gate Orchids also brought in a tremendous overall display, full of the Odontoglossums for which they are renowned, and 4

5 won several awards including the AOS Show Trophy. A little Aerangis hyaloides rounded out the show for me this little gem was flowering with 8 spikes and hundred of flowers on a plant no more than a few inches tall. The plant was literally covered with flowers. Sorry I didn t get the name of the exhibitor, but boy it made me want to grow Aerangis!! In addition, we attended the best thing in the entire season for Kate and I, the annual Paphiopedilum Guild in Morro Bay. We were treated to wonderful presentations by a number of leading growers, on topics like multifloral paphs crossed with brachys and parvis, new developments and species of paphs, new hybrids now flowering with superior clones of Phrag. besseae and with Phrag. kovachii, and a look inside the haloed gates of Orchid Zone at a bench including probably 1000 green complex paphs. Wow!! What a fantastic weekend, to say nothing of the wonderful camaraderie in the group or of the amount of alcohol we put away. I implore you: if you like paphs at all, make room in your calendar for next year s Paph Guild, occurring in mid-january. Coming very soon is the Santa Cruz Orchid Society show, distinguished not so much by the show itself as by the tremendous amount of sale plants from a number of leading area growers. Tons of plants for sale down there!! Try to get there early for best bets, and enjoy super-low prices. While you re there, come visit me at Maplethorpe Orchids, and don t forget to bring your Dance Card Award for a great discount. Wait, what s that? You didn t get a Dance Card Award? Well then by all means go to the website and download the new 2008 SCVOS Dance Card from the home page to get in on the awesome action for next year. Remember that your attendance at this and other shows counts towards your Dance Card total for Perhaps the most amazing event this year is right around the corner. Be sure to attend the Pacific Orchid Expo running from the 15th to the 18th at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. This show is right up there with the best orchid events in the United States, and promises some wonderful displays from grower both local and international. In addition, there exist many opportunities to purchase very rare, interesting, or (except for this show) un-findable plants at the sales area. If you re really interested in a fabulous time, buy special tickets for the opening night preparty, have a glass (or several) of wine and mingle with the high and mighty or San Francisco socialites and orchid growers. Please grab a flier at the February meeting or see the flier below. In addition the 58 th Annual Clara Valley Orchid Society Show and Sale will occur on March at Westgate Mall in San Jose. As your show Co-Chair, I hope that you will bring as much as you can to the show, to demonstrate not only your skill as a grower but our vibrant society as a whole. Remember that we will be featuring exhibits as a major part of the display. I would like to thank Eanghak Quach, Ann Stuart, and Peter Brown, a new member this year for agreeing to put in displays this year, and encourage others to volunteer as well. You may put in an exhibit individually or with a friend or two, so give it some thought over the next two months. We ve purchased the ODC Trophy, the highest honor for a non-commercial exhibit in the AOS; could this be your year to win it? Although there s only four displays so far, based on last year the competition should be fierce. If you have additional questions about keeping flowers around for awhile for the show, putting in a display, or anything else for that matter, me! Also, start thinking about dividing some plants for member sales at the show. Your member sales plants help support the various functions of our society. Please see below to find information pertaining to selling plants at the show, including rules inventory blanks, and price tags. These items will be available at the monthly meeting as well. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, consider volunteering your time for the show. At the meeting, I will pass around sign up sheets for various duties pertaining to the show. As part of the show schedule accompanying this newsletter, please find job descriptions and a reminder form. If you d like to sign up in advance of the meeting, please me with the job and time slot you d prefer. Please remember that the annual show provides support for our guest speaker and all our annual events. Most importantly, bring as many flowering plants as possible, as the sight is spectacular for the general public and helps to promote sales. Remember your involvement in the show counts towards the Dance Card!! 5

15 Santa Clara Valley Orchid Society 57th Annual Show Westgate Mall, San Jose CA. Show Schedule The show is open to any and all exhibitors, except commercial growers 1. The show committee encourages all growers to enter as many plants as possible to make this show an outstanding success. The Santa Clara Valley Orchid Society assumes no responsibility for damage to or loss of plants entered in the show. Entries for individual plant judging, including American Orchid Society (A.O.S.) Award Judging, must be presented to the entry clerk in the mall between 3:00 PM and 7PM on March 28 th. Any entry presented after 7:00 PM will not be accepted. Judging will be at 9:00 AM on Saturday, March 29 th. All plants must be removed at 5:00 PM Sunday, March 30 th. Commercial orchid growers are not eligible for ribbons or trophy judging 1. Plants submitted for A.O.S. judging only shall be on display for the length of the show, and may be removed on Sunday, March 30 th at 5:00 PM. At the discretion of the judges, First, Second, and Third place ribbons will be awarded in all classes in all sections. Only plants which are correctly labeled and completely entered for ribbon judging will be considered. Any plant infested with insects, or diseased, will be removed from the show. No plant may be entered for ribbon or trophy judging unless it has been owned and grown by the exhibitor for six months. Plants entered for A.O.S. judging are governed by the A.O.S. rules. The S.C.V.O.S Show is an A.O.S.-sanctioned show. The A.O.S. rules state: "All plants or flowers submitted at a regional judging session or exhibited at an A.O.S.-sanctioned show shall be considered for an award and the exhibitor is obligated to accept and pay the fee for any (A.O.S) award granted except where he has clearly indicated before the judging that his entry is not to be A.O.S. judged. An exhibitor may not specify what award he will accept." Any photographer s fees will be the responsibility of the exhibitor. Meristem and stem propagated plants are not considered seedlings. 1 A commercial grower is one who derives a substantial part of one s income from the sale of orchids. AMATEUR: One who has won less than 3 trophies other than ribbons, at any orchid show. INTERMEDIATE: One who has won at least 3, but less than 15 trophies, other than ribbons, at orchid shows and is not a commercial grower. Copy plant titles from entry slip into show spreadsheet. Use MS Excel quickly and efficiently. Entry: Examiner Verify classification of plants entered before entry clerk enters plant in spreadsheet. Reclassify plants as necessary. Assist exhibitors in finding proper classification. Plant Sales: Cashier Stay near cash box and plant sales tables. Collect money, make change. Place stickers on plants which have been purchased. Box plants which have been purchased. Collect member sales receipts. Plant Sales: Advanced Grower Answer questions and advise regarding orchids. You are the advanced grower of the hour. People with questions they cannot answer about orchid growing will be directed to you for answers. Plant Sales: Salesperson Be aware of the sales inventory. Help customers find the plants they want. Answer customer questions about orchids. Invoice the customers by writing up a sales tag for plants they wish to purchase. Host or Hostess Watch plants and guests to see that no plants are taken. Answer questions. Stand or sit near the plants. Potting Demonstrators Bring your own plants, tools, and potting materials. 28 Santa Clara Valley Orchid Society 2008 Annual Show Sales Rules and General Information To ensure that our show runs as smoothly as possible, the board has set into place the following rules concerning the sale of member plants: 1. Members may bring a maximum of 50 plants for the sale and requests to exceed 50 plants shall be approved by the Show Chair. 2. Member sales plants shall be priced at whole dollar amounts with the plant owner receiving 75% of the displayed prices. Sales tax shall be added to the displayed value for purchaser s payments. 3. Member shall provide a master list of plants checked-in for sale. It is advisable to have a second copy for record-keeping at the discretion of the member. 4. Member shall provide a detachable label with the owner ID and sale price on each plant. Label blanks may be found below and will be provided at the monthly meetings for the two months prior to the show. 5. Unsold member plants may be checked out and removed only after closing on the final day. 6. Member s checks shall be based on the removable tags accumulated sale price, and lost tags are not the responsibility of the SCVOS. Each member selling plants assumes risk of such tags, and unless the member can indisputably verify the sale occurred, there will be no reimbursement to the member. 7. Above rules shall be accepted upon submitting plants for sale and plant ID list. If there are questions or concerns pertaining to these rules, please address them to me by phone or preferably .
