Eric spoke to the SCVOS last August on the Orchids of Australia which was a wonderfully spirited and informative presentation. Alas, Eric is about to depart the Bay Area for greener pastures and we are taking the opportunity to hear his spectacular presentation on the Orchids of Borneo before he leaves us. Tim Culbertson considers this talk one of the"best orchid lectures I've seen." As one of the official American Orchid Society Awards photographers for the Pacific Central Judging Region and owner of Eric is a world renowned photographer and orchid expert. He has contributed thousands of hours to the San Francisco Orchid Society and for many many years to Orchidmania. Eric's Digest, The Orchid Review, Orkideer(magazine of Swedish Orchid Society), Pollinia (magazine of the Irish Orchid Society), Gardener's World Magazine (UK), California Home and Design, and The San Francisco Chronicle. Recent books using his work include 300 Orchids, Miracle Gro Complete Guide to Orchids, Orchid Species of Peru, The Illustrated Dictionary of orchid Genera, and Huntleyas and Related Orchids.photography has appeared in Orchids, The Orchid Here are some photos by Eric: Paphiopedulum javanicum vat. virens Trichoglottus smithii Vanda sumatrana. 1

6 Question Corner Starting in January we will have a Question Corner in the Newsletter. If you send me questions about orchids, I will forward them to some of our advanced growers for answers. This is an opportunity to get information from some of our really amazing advanced growers. Pictures of the problem will be greatly appreciated too. We will use several questions each month. If we use your question, you will get 5 free raffle tickets at the next meeting. Send them to me at Davejsmitt@gmail.com. OLIVERS CORNER Orchid Facts: Oncidium(Onc.), a New World genus, can be found in the tropical Americas: from northern Mexico, parts of southern Florida, the Caribbean to parts of South America. It contains about 330 species. Many species, though, have been reclassified. Many taxonomists find this genus very complicated and difficult. In fact many of its former species have already been reclassified into their own separate genus (e.g. Psychopsis, Tolumnia). In 1800, Olof Swartz first described this genus with Oncidium altissimum. It has since become the type species for this genus. The genus name came from the Greek word "onkos" (swelling), referring to the callus at the lower lip. They are mostly epiphytes, although some grow as lithophytes and terrestrials. An Oncidium flower close-up. column wings callus This genus have the following characteristics: presence of column wings; presence of a complicated callus on the lip; pseudobulbs with one to three leaves; and several basal bracts at the base of the pseudobulbs. Flowers can be in shades of yellow, red, white and pink, with often ruffled edges. The rather big lip partially blocks the small petals and sepals. Some species may grow to a height of 15 feet. Below is a list of some intergeneric Oncidium hybrids: Oncidium altissimum-type species Alexanderara (Brassia x Cochlioda x Odontoglossum x Oncidium) Aliceara (Brassia x Miltonia x Oncidium) Bakerara (Brassia x Miltonia x Odontoglossum x On cidium) Brassidium (Brassia x Oncidium) Brilliandeara (Aspasia x Brassia x Cochlioda x Milto nia x Odontoglossum x Oncidium) Burrageara (Cochlioda x Miltonia x Odontoglossum x Oncidum) 6
