3 Ans: Leaves are able to make food for the plant in presence of air, water and sunlight by the process of photosynthesis. Therefore, leaves are called the food factory of a plant. Q 4: What is germination? What does a seed require to germinate? Ans: The process of development of new plant from a seed is called germination. A seed requires water, sunlight and nutrients to germinate. E. Soil erosion : The washing or blowing away of the top layer of soil by water or wind is called soil erosion. 02. Petiole : The part of the leaf that connects it to the stem is called petiole. 03. Chlorophyll : It is a green coloured substance present in the leaves of plants and gives them green colour. 04. Transpiration : The process in which plants absorb water through their roots and then release water vapour through stomata is called transpiration. 05. Germination : The process by which a new plant develops from a seed is called germination. English Chapter No : 03 (When Rusty Played Holi) 1. 4 Q 1: Where did the children gather? What was happening there? Ans: The children gathered in front of a clock tower. They were playing Holi there. Clouds of coloured dust rose in the air and spread and jets of water-green, orange and purple burst out everywhere. Q 2: What were the children armed with? Ans: The children were armed mainly with bicycle pumps, or pumps made from bamboo stem s from which colourful water spurted out. Q 3: Why was Rusty blinded? Ans: Rusty was blinded because a bicycle pump was directed at him and a jet of black water came flying on to his face. Q 4: Why was Suri hiding? What did he do to keep himself away from all his friends? Ans: Suri was hiding because she dreaded Holi. To keep himself away from all his friends, he hid himself in a camp, which he had set up in his mother s kitchen. Q 5: How did everyone reach Suri? Lesson No: 04 The Centipede Song Summary: The poem The Centipede is a descriptive poem that describes a centipede and the way it moves. The Centipede has 40,000 little legs which actually mean innumerable legs with which it walks slowly down the stairs. They walk in pairs with 40,000 little feet. When they walk on the gravel, they make crushing sound. The sound produced by them is like the sound of an army of soldiers on parade. The Centipede is seen very Page 4
5 happy and it doesn t care about anything as long as its 40,000 shoes are in good condition. Do Bookwork of this lesson English Grammar Story Writing The Golden Touch This is the story of a very greedy rich man who chanced upon meeting a fairy. The greedy man asked for a wish, whatever he touched with his hand should turn into gold. The fairy smiled and granted his wish. He jumped up with joy. The greedy man rushed home, he touched walls, furniture and all things turned into gold. His daughter rushed to greet him, as soon as he touched her she turned into gold statue. Now he wanted to eat some bread, it also turned into gold. Tears streamed down his face. The fairy appeared again. The greedy man requested her to take his wish back. Moral : Greediness will always lead to a downfall. Project Work: (Do Any Three) 1. Make a list of ten negative sentences apart from those given in your book. Write them on your scrapbook. 2. Take some English newspapers. Look at the big bold headline. Highlight the common nouns and the proper nouns using two different coloured sketch pens. Paste them on your scrapbook. 3. Make a list of not less than 20 words singular and plural nouns. Write them on a chart/scrapbook. 4. Write the parts of speech on a chart or scrapbook with examples. 5. Read a paragraph or two daily from your English text books to enhance your pronunciation also learn the spellings of difficult words. Page 5
6 Chapter No 4 Nouns: Common and Proper 1) Noun: A noun is a name of a person, place, animal or thing e.g. chair, queen, Aisha, India, egg, lion etc. 2) Common Noun: A common noun is the name of any person, place, animal or thing e.g. boy, city, lion, book etc. It does not begin with a capital letter. A common noun may be singular or plural. 3) Proper Noun: A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place, animal or thing e.g. Rahim, Mumbai, Simba, Cindrella etc. It always begins with a capital letter. A proper noun is always singular. 4) Collective Noun : A noun that names a collection or group of people, animals, birds or things is called a collective noun e.g., A flock of birds, A band of Musicians, a swarm of bees, A bouquet of flowers Consult page 21, 22, 24 of your book : Exercise page 22, 23 A.
