Without plants we wouldn t have the oxygen we need to survive. All plants start as seeds. There are three parts to a seed. The first part is the which protects the seed. Inside the seed is the which is where the new plant starts to grow. Finally, there is the _ which stores food for the new plant. 3 Girls and boys, What are Seeds? Seeds let plants make more plants like themselves. Seeds carry the beginnings of plants inside them. Inside each seed is an EMBRYO which given water, oxygen and temperature will grow into a new plant. The outside of the seed is called the SEED COAT. 8 Plant some seeds and observe which seeds grow the best in different places. Use 4 plastic cups, some soil and some sunflower seeds Step 1. Write your class and table group on each cup Step 2. Put 5cm of soil in your cups. Step 3. Push 4 seeds about 2cm into the soil of each cup Step 4. Put 3 tablespoons of water into each cup. Step 5. Put your cups in the 4 positions shown to you by your teacher. Step 6. Record the results in the table on the next page. 23

10 Cut a seed in half to see what is inside it. Use a small knife, a magnifying glass, paper towel and a seed Step 1. Look at the soaked seed on your paper towel. Step 2. 12 Girls and boys, If you're not a microbe and you're not an animal, you are probably a plant. There are about 300 thousand known species of plants. Because plants adapt so well to almost any climate, scientists classify plants just like animals. We will look at how to classify plants later this year. Parts of a Plant There are six main parts of a plant: Roots - They act like straws absorbing water and minerals from the soil. They help to anchor the plant in the soil so it does not fall over. They also store extra food for future use. Stem - They support the plant. They move water and nutrients from the roots and food from the leaves to other plant parts. Leaves - Most plants' food is made here. They are designed to capture sunlight which the plant uses to make food through a process called photosynthesis. Flower - They are the reproductive part of most plants. They contain pollen and tiny eggs called ovules. After pollination of the flower and fertilization of the ovule, the ovule develops into a fruit. Fruit - Provides a covering for seeds. It can be fleshy like an apple or hard like a nut. Seeds - Contain new plants and form in fruit. 27

16 Girls and boys, A life cycle is how long it takes something to start and finish growing. A plant's life cycle describes how long a plant lives or how long it takes to grow, flower, and set seed. Plants can be either an annual, biennial, or perennial. An annual An annual is a plant that completes its life cycle in one growing season. It will grow, flower, set seed, and die. Example: tomatoes A biennial A biennial is a plant that needs two growing seasons to complete its life cycle. It grows vegetatively (produces leaves) one season. Example: carrots A perennial A perennial is a plant that lives for 3 or more years. It can grow, flower, and set seed for many years. Underground parts may regrow new stems as in the case of herbaceous plants, or the stems may live for many years like woody plants (trees). Example: roses. 31

17 Then it goes dormant or sleeps over the winter. In the spring, it will begin to grow again and grow flowers, set seed, and die. The seed that is left behind on the ground begins to grow and the cycle begins again. Plant Lifecycle Label and color the diagram of a plant lifecycle. 32
