2 1 How Did Plant Life Begin? BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW EVOLUTIONARY WORLDVIEW The Biblical worldview is that plants began on the third day of creation, created by God as mature plants complete with fruit and seeds. The Evolutionary worldview is that plants evolved from nonliving matter. After millions of years, there evolved fruit trees and other plants.

5 3 Could Photosynthesis Have Evolved? Energy Carbon Dioxide Chlorophyll Water Oxygen is released Glucose is formed Photosynthesis, the process by which plants transform light energy from the sun into sugar which they use for food, requires complicated machinery right from the start. It could not have slowly and gradually evolved over millions of years because the mechanism would not have been complete to fuel the machinery necessary to start the process. Photosynthesis could not have evolved because it needs to convert energy to food in order to make energy.
6 3 Plant s Energy Features Roots, veins and tubes are the parts of the plant that carry water and other materials throughout the plant. Stems, roots and leaves store extra sugar. The chlorophyll in the chloroplasts captures energy from the sunlight.
7 4 What Was the Purpose of Flowers and Fruits? BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW EVOLUTIONARY WORLDVIEW Flowers were created for the pleasure of God and mankind. Fruit would serve as food for mankind. Flowers just happened. Fruit was for the tree that produced it.

10 5 Plant Reproduction Most flowers have four main parts petals, sepals, pistils and stamen. Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the stamen to the pistil. This transfer occurs when wind, insects, birds and other animals carry the pollen. The pistil is the female organ of the plant. It produces egg cells. The stamen is the male part of the plant that produces sperm cells in the pollen. Stamen Pistil The petal is the colorful part the flower which protects the part of the flower that makes seeds. Sepals are the leaf-like parts that cover and protect the flower bud. Pollen on stamen Pistil Ovary Fertilization occurs when a sperm cell from a grain of pollen combines with an egg cell inside of the ovary of the pistil.

12 Plants Lesson 6 Flowering Plant Life Cycle A dormant seed needs water, oxygen and right temperature to germinate. A seed is multi-celled. Seeds are scattered by wind, water, gravity and animals. 5 Fruit grows around the seeds. When the fruit and seeds are separated from the parent plant, the new seeds germinate and the life cycle begins again. 1 When the seed begins to germinate, or grow, it absorbs water and swells, splitting the seed coat. The young plant inside the seed uses stored food to grow and the first stem pushes through the seed coat. 13 6 Other Plant Life Cycles Some plants grow from spores. A spore is a tiny single cell surrounded by a hard protective covering. When a spore lands on wet ground, it begins to germinate and grow. The young plant has male and female cells. The male and female cells combine and the fertilized egg grows into a plant which produces more spores.
