9 Population A population = a group of organisms of the same species living in the same place at the same time! Individuals cannot evolve.! Populations CAN evolve. 9&

10 Gene Pools Gene Pool = ALL of the alleles in a population! Allele Frequency = measure of how common an allele is in a population! More common = higher frequency Where does genetic variation come from in the first place? Two main sources of variation:! 1. Mutations! 2. Recombination Mutations Mutations = random changes in DNA. Passed on only if they occur in gametes. (Body cells will not pass on!) 10&

11 Recombination Recombination = new allele combinations form from crossing over during meiosis Variation = Survival! Example:! In a population of penguins, there are normal size penguins, fat penguins, and slender penguins Why is genetic variation important? Genetic variation increases the likelihood that some individuals in a population will survive!!!! More variation = better chance of survival Variation = Survival! Example:! Who survives when it gets really cold? 11&

16 Disruptive Selection Definition:! Favors phenotypes at BOTH extremes of a curve! What it looks like:! Two peaks at the sides, with a dip in the middle! Example:! Some fur/body coloring! Finch beaks 16&

Fewer eggs lowers the chance of survival, and too many eggs attracts a lot of predators.! 4. Bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics over time! 5.
