Discover Greenland September 15-25, 2019 On Board M/V Hondius We have the wonderful opportunity in September 2019 to explore the longest fjord in the world -- Scoresbysund -- in East Greenland on board the splendid new vessel, M/V Hondius. Our long time colleague Dr. Ko De Korte did his Ph.D. research in Scoresbysund, and has been developing expeditions to remote regions in the Arctic ever since. Ko has spoken with us many times about the magnificence of Scoresbysund, the Inuit people who live there, and spectacle of the mountains, glaciers, icebergs, and wildlife that can be found there. He cherishes the people of East Greenland, and has published a book with images from the 1970 s of the Inuit people - his friends! I was recently in West Greenland and can only say, Wow. Greenland is extraordinary! I very much hope you can take advantage of this opportunity and join us to explore Scoresbysund from September 15-25, 2019! The tundra will be in fall color and some evenings the Aurora Borealis may dazzle us with green waves dancing across the night sky! I do hope you will join us! Best Regards, Margaret M. Betchart President, Betchart Expeditions Inc. for AAAS, Sigma Xi, ACS & the Planetary Society
Ittoqqortoormiit ITINERARY Days 1/2 Depart Newark for Reykjavik, Iceland Depart Newark or other IcelandAir gateways for Reykjavik, Iceland, arriving around 6:30 am on Day 2. Transfer to the nearby Viking Museum for a welcome breakfast and chance to see a traditional Viking boat that actually sailed to the New World. Have a brief Reykjavik city tour, then check in at our hotel, right in the heart of Reykjavik. It is a splendid base to meander the streets and explore nearby museums. B Day 3 Reykjavik to Akureyri We ll begin the morning with a short stroll to the nearby bakery that makes Icelandic pastries! 50 W GREENLAND Reykjavik Arctic Circle Atlantic Ocean 80 N 70 N 40 W 30 W 20 W 60 N SCORESBYSUND Milne Land Danmark Ø Rømer Fjord Nansen Fjord Keflavik Jameson Land Ittoqqortoormiit Akureyri ICELAND Reykjavik Route of M/V Hondius Sept , 2019 Actual Land Forms of Greenland (Simply delectable!) We ll then depart for the Reykjavik domestic airport for our flight to Akureyri on the north coast. Explore Akureyri until it is time to board M/V Hondius (8 nights) and sail north towards the Denmark Strait. Day 4 Sailing to East Greenland We will have a day at sea across the Denmark Strait to East Greenland. Join us on deck and you re likely to see Arctic birds -- fulmars, kittiwakes, gannets, and common guillemots. Our leaders will also give a welcome talk. By evening the first icebergs will flash into sight as we approach the East Greenland Coast, near Brewster.
Day 5 Scoresbysund & Inuit Neighborhood of Yesteryear Today we will reach Scoresbysund, sailing along the glaciated Volquart Boons Kyst. We may also enjoy a Zodiac cruise past one of the glacier fronts, along with a visit to the basalt columns and ice formations of Vikingebugt. The afternoon goal is to visit Danmark Island, where you find the remains of an Inuit settlement abandoned around 200 years ago. The circular stone tent rings indicate the summer houses, while the winter houses can be seen closer to a small cape. The sites are well preserved, with easily identifiable entrances, bear-proof meat caches, and grave sites. In the evening we will continue sailing in the iceberg-crowded fjords to the west. Day 6 Colors of the Cape & Røde Ø The goal today is a Zodiac cruise near Røde Ø, one of the world s most cherished iceberg attractions. The austere blue-white of the icebergs sets a sharp contrast against the brooding red backdrop of the sedimentary slopes. The afternoon plan is to sail through the northern parts of Røde Fjord, with the chance to see musk ox and the warm red and gold autumnal foliage. Day 7 Enormous Icebergs & Arctic Hares In the morning we will encounter colossal icebergs, some over 100 meters (328 feet) high and more than a kilometer (.62 mile) long. Most of them are Rate of change in Icecap Height (cm/year) grounded, as the fjord is only about 400 meters deep (1,312 feet). You then land near Sydkap, with fine views of Hall Bredning and a good shot of seeing Arctic hares. Day 8 Ittoqqortoormlit Settlement at Scoresbysund & Blosseville Coast Today we will make a tundra landing on Liverpool Land, in Hurry Inlet. In the afternoon we will stop at Ittoqqortoormlit, the largest settlement in Scoresbysund at about five hundred inhabitants. We can visit the post office and buy stamps for your postcards, or just stroll around to see the sled dogs and drying skins of seals and musk ox. In the afternoon we sail south, passing the picturesque landscapes of the Blosseville Coast.
Melting and Retreat of Helheim Glacier in SE Greenland, km Glacier margin June 19, 2005 July 7, 2003 May 12, 2001 Day 9 Narwhal Waters & Polar Bear Shores Turner Sound and Rømer Fjord will grant us the opportunity to sail far inland, as they have no glacier front at the head and are not clogged with ice. In this location, you have your best shot at spotting narwhals and polar bears, with a bit of luck! History of Scoresby Sund The Scoresby Sund (Kangertittivaq) in East Greenland is the largest fjord in the World. People from the Thule culture lived here until about In 1925 about 70 inhabitants from Tasiilaq = Ammassalik (800 km to the south) repopulated the area in the settlement Scoresbysund ( Ittoqqortoormiit = place with big houses). Hunting The Scoresby Sund is a good area for seals, narwhals, polar bears, musk ox, geese and seabirds, all of which are hunted for meat and skins. Gun, dog sled and motor boat are used for hunting. Until 1975 the kayak was in use. In winter the fjord freezes over with solid ice, but open water remains at the mouth of the fjord. They hunt along the ice edge in late winter and spring for seabirds, polar bears and seals. These days few people are full-time hunters. Scoresby Sund & William Scoresby The main structure of Scoresby Sund is about 110 km (approx. 68 mi) long, with a large number of islands and numerous side fjords, of which the longest extends about 350 km from the coastline inland. Some of the fjords further inland are up to 1,450 m (4,760 ft) deep. The Scoresby Sund region of Greenland was first mapped in 1822 by the English explorer William Scoresby. The overwhelming beauty of the vast fjord system, including the high walls and cliffs made of basalt, as well as the multi-faceted flora and fauna, fascinated the explorer, just as they do any traveler who visits this part of Greenland today. Day 10 A Day at Sea Under the Northern Lights A day at sea as we sail to Akureyri in Iceland will grant you the opportunity to look for whales and seabirds and at night, the magical Northern Lights. M/V Hondius M/V Hondius is the new and most polar advanced Class 6 vessel in the world. It is in the fleet of our colleagues in Holland, Oceanwide Expeditions. It accommodates 174 passengers in 82 cabins. There are high quality accommodations from suites to quads, with windows or portholes. One deck includes a large observation lounge and separate lecture room. There is a cozy and informal atmosphere. Zodiac boats guarantee swift and safe landing operations for all passengers at the same time. 24 passengers may kayak at a time. Betchart has been working with our colleagues at Oceanwide on voyages in Belize since 1995, in Antarctica since 1999, and various itineraries in the Arctic for 20 + years. We are delighted to be on board their new ultimate vessel, Hondius!
Day 11 Journey s End at Akureyri We will disembark in Akureyri, where we will join a six-hour drive to Reykjavik, taking home memories that will accompany you wherever your next adventure lies. Upon arrival Reykjavik, transfer to the international airport in Keflavik; arrive in the USA the same day. Or join our Iceland post-trip.
