Speaker: Don Hladiuk EARTH SCIENCE FOR SOCIETY GEO THEATER Retired Geologist and Life Member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Topic: Pluto Revealed On October 26, 2016, all the data from the New Horizon spacecraft s fly by of Pluto was received back here on Earth. It took five hours and eight minutes for the data stream to travel the 5.5 billion kilometer distance from New Horizons to Earth. After a nine year journey this tiny grand piano sized spacecraft has revealed the Pluto system was well worth the wait. There are several examples of active geologic processes occurring on Pluto like the bright Sputnik Planitia region that has tell tale signatures of ice flows, likely from slow moving nitrogen glaciers. Join Don Hladiuk for a 20 minute presentation on the highlights of what New Horizons revealed about this distant icy world and its moons.

Speaker: Jon Dudley EARTH SCIENCE FOR SOCIETY GEO THEATER Retired Geologist, Research Associate Arctic Institute of North America Topic: Cruising the Arctic: A Voyage Through Time and Change DATE: Sunday, March 19, 2017 TIMES: 2:00 pm 4:00 pm

Speaker: Jon Dudley EARTH SCIENCE FOR SOCIETY GEO THEATER Retired Geologist, Research Associate Arctic Institute of North America Topic: Cruising the Arctic: A Voyage Through Time and Change Each summer an increasing number of cruise ships take people through the Canadian Arctic, a part of Canada that relatively few of us get to see. Most summers Jon Dudley has the privilege of going to the Arctic working on one of those ships. As a geologist he helps to tell the passengers the story of the land and its creation. Jon works with a team that includes archaeologists, botanists, marine biologists, bird researchers, historians and Inuit who welcome us to their homeland and teach us about their culture.

Speaker: Jon Dudley EARTH SCIENCE FOR SOCIETY GEO THEATER Retired Geologist, Research Associate Arctic Institute of North America Topic: Cruising the Arctic: A Voyage Through Time and Change The Arctic is an experience in change on many scales. When Jon first travelled to the Arctic there was no telephone, television and certainly no internet. All of these exist today. The first change most passengers encounter is to the itinerary; nature rarely permits travel along the planned route and one needs to accept and adapt to these changes. The Inuit can teach the importance of adaptation; changing some ways while retaining those traditional ways that are best suited to the land.

Speaker: Jon Dudley EARTH SCIENCE FOR SOCIETY GEO THEATER Retired Geologist, Research Associate Arctic Institute of North America Topic: Cruising the Arctic: A Voyage Through Time and Change Over millions of years changes to the land that is today the Arctic have been gargantuan. In the deep past there have been Himalayan sized mountains, warm tropical seas, dinosaurs, and an ice cap that extended all the way to Calgary. Studies to understand this ancient history have helped in finding new local sources of carving stone for use by Inuit artists. The land continues to rise as the ice cap melts and the weight of the ice is removed. Old human encampments once near the shoreline are now stranded well above the current beach. Some cultural remains are being lost as current seas erode some shorelines and these changes are monitored by expedition cruises that visit these remote sites. The Arctic provides a wondrous display of the Earth as dynamic and ever changing.
