1 FIRST CONTACT Astronomy 101, Section 4 at the Domed Theater Professor Neil McFadden Professor John McGraw Ladies and Gentlemen Welcome to Astronomy 101, Section 004, Course Number (CRN#) 44736, taught in the Domed Theater of the NM Museum of Natural History and Science at 18 th and Mountain, just north of Old Town. We ll convene our first class session on Monday, January 17, 2018 at 6:00 PM. Because this course is off campus, and taught in a unique environment, I thought I d provide some information about the class logistics. A syllabus and a current class schedule are found on the class homepage. Our class homepage is found on the Physics and Astronomy Department main web page. On the P&A web page ( in the left-most column you ll find a link to Class Homepages. Click that link and you ll find Astro 101 Section 004, with Professor McFadden/McGraw. You can go directly to Much of the course material, including engaging and entertaining Introductory Questions (IQs) that are displayed as the class gathers in the domed theater, will be posted on this page. Please consult our class homepage for information and study aids, including the IQs, which will be posted after each class. Other useful material and links related to our class and to astronomy will also appear on this page. Class will be held from 6:00 PM until 7:15 PM on Monday and Wednesday. The Domed Theater is located at the NM Museum of Natural History and Science at 1801 Mountain Road NE, just north of Old Town. Students usually drive or carpool to class. Parking on Mountain Road or in the Museum parking lot off 18 th Street is plentiful and free, and no permit is required. A simple route is to go west on I-40 from the Big-I to Rio Grande. Go south on Rio Grande to Mountain (stop light). Go east on Mountain to the second light, and you ll be at the Museum. You can park on the south side of Mountain, or go north one block on 18th Street to the Museum parking lot. Google and MapQuest will both get you to the right place. Entry to our class is through double doors on the south of the Museum, facing Mountain Road (see photos below) NOT the main doors on the east facing 18 th Street, and guarded by the dinosaurs! Doors will be opened at approximately 5:40 PM. The Domed Theater will be found through the double doors and to your left. The entry will be obvious. ASTR-101 is unique because it is held in the Domed Theater, which contains the highest technology projection and sound equipment west of the Mississippi River. We are extremely lucky to have Museum theater professionals help us view planets, stars and galaxies, fly through star clusters, explore our Milky Way galaxy and journey among the galaxies. Please note that the domed theater demonstrations you will see are NOT artist s renditions they are the real thing astronomical data and images observed

2 by the Hubble Space Telescope, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Telescope, the Very Large Array radio telescope and many other ground- and space-based observatories. Please contact me if you have problems acquiring your textbook. If you know others who might like to take this class, please pass on this note. We have room for and would welcome additional students in our section ASTR Thank you for your help. If you have questions, please contact or All the best in the upcoming semester! Professors Neil McFadden and John McGraw
