3 Common Name and Mythological Story Saturn's nickname is The Ringed planet Saturn is its own mythological name, along with the name Cronus In Roman religion Saturn was a god of agriculture and time, the Romans identified Saturn with the greek Cronus whose myths were adapted for latin literature and Roman art

4 Position, distance from the Sun Saturn is the 6th planet from the sun Its billion km from the sun Saturn is 72, 367 miles in diameter while earth is just 7,917 miles in diameter

5 Revolution and Rotation Revolution It takes 10,759 Earth Days or 29 ½ years for Saturn to complete one revolution around the Sun. Rotation To study rotation on Saturn, scientists have divided the planet into three different sections. Section 1 is the equator, section 2 is the area above and below, and section 3 is the magnetic field. Section 1=10 hours and 14 minutes Section 2=10 hours and 39 minutes Section 3=Previously 10 hours and 39 minutes, but has slowed to 10 hours and 45 minutes

6 Atmosphere Composition Saturn is one of the four gas giants in our solar system. Its atmosphere is composed of 97% Hydrogen 3% Helium.05% Methane

7 Layers Composition Saturn s surface is mainly composed of gases, not solids, so it is impossible to stand on it. The first layer of Saturn is the core, composed of hot rocky metal elements, it is believed to be solid. The next layer is composed of liquid hydrogen and liquid metallic hydrogen. Following this is one composed of molecular hydrogen. The last and final layer is the layered atmosphere, composed of mainly hydrogen and helium, but also containing ice of ammonia, water and methane.

8 Rings of Saturn Size Each ring is about 270,000 km in diameter, but only a few hundred meters thick. Composition The rings are made up of particles of ice, sizes ranging from a few centimeters to whole decimeters. Other materials include silica and carbon. There are 4 main groups of rings, and 3 other fainter, narrower groups. These rings are separated by gaps, called divisions. Inside each of the seven groups, there are thousands of smaller rings.

12 Travel Time and Effect From the Sun Travel Time The travel time from Earth to Saturn is 1.2 billion kilometers. Traveling at 200,000 km/hr, it would take 6,000 hours to get to Saturn from Earth. Sun s Effect Saturn s internal magnetic field is the second largest in the solar system (behind Jupiter), its size and strength allows it to deflect the Sun s stream of charged particles (solar wind). At the other end of Saturn however, solar wind stretches the magnetic field lines into long flowing lines. Two lobes exist, the northern and southern.

13 Interesting Facts Saturn has a pale yellow hue due to ammonia crystals in its upper atmosphere. Wind speeds on Saturn can reach 1,800 km/h. Saturn has 62 moons, 53 are formally named. The largest moon is Titan. Titan is bigger than Mercury. Saturn is a gas giant planet. It takes Saturn 10,759 Earth days to finish one revolution around the Sun.
