1 Summary of Agromet Advisory Services for different States of the country Issued by Agricultural Meteorology Division, India Meteorological Department, Pune, India Þ Thursday, 11 th May, 06 (For the period 11 th to 15 th May, 06) The extended version of the bulletin is also available at North West India (Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu& Kashmir, Uttaranchal) Punjab, Haryana Severe heat wave prevailed on 8 th and heat wave prevailed on 9 th May in Northern parts of Punjab. Weather remained mainly dry during remaining days. Severe heat wave prevailed on 8 th and heat wave prevailed on 9 th in western parts of Haryana. Rain / thundershowers occurred at a few places on 9 th May. Weather remained mainly dry during rest days of the period. Isolated dust storm / thunderstorm are likely over the state. Day temperatures are likely to remain around C and increase after two days. Except for the crops grown at Gurdaspur, Jalandar, Nawashahar and Ropar districts, apply frequent irrigation to sugarcane, sunflower and cotton in all the districts of Punjab as there was no rain during last few weeks and dust storm / thunderstorm is likely to occur only at isolated places over the State during next three days and the temperature is likely to remain around C. As there was rain at Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Nawashahar and Ropar districts during last week apply irrigation as per soil profile stored moisture. Apply frequent irrigation to sugarcane, sunflower and cotton in all the districts of Haryana as there was no significant rain during last few weeks except in Chandigarh, Karnal, Kurukshetera and only isolated dust storm / thunder storm is likely over of the State during next three days. This will also reduce the impact of heat wave conditions prevailing in western Haryana. Apply irrigation in the above mentioned districts depending on the soil profile stored moisture as there was excess rainfall during last week. In order to prevent sunflower from wind damage and inclement weather from shattering of seeds, cut the crop, if matured, and solar dry it at safer places. Weather condition is favourable for of sugarcane, rabi oilseeds and wheat. Rajasthan Duststorm occurred at few places in Jaipur and Bikaner divisions. Severe heat wave conditions prevailed in some parts of Bikaner division and heat wave conditions in most parts of rest of the State and these are still continuing. Isolated duststorm /thunderstorm may occur over Rajasthan. Heat wave conditions will continue to prevail over West Rajasthan. Apply frequent irrigation to zaide moong and zaide fodder in all the districts of the State as duststorm / thunderstorm may occur only at isolated places over the State and heat wave conditions likely to continue over west Rajasthan.

2 Continue sowing of cotton crop with adequate irrigation facilities. Select varieties from RG-8, RG-18 and Bikaneri. Apply light irrigation after sowing for better germination of crop. Uttar Pradesh Heat wave condition prevailed over some parts of West Uttar Pradesh on 8 th May and likely abated for next two days and weather was mainly dry in the State. Rain occurred at isolated places in Bareilly division and weather was mainly dry in all division of the state on 9 th May. Rain occurred at isolated places in the state on 10 th May. Isolated dust storm/thunderstorm is likely over the West Uttar Pradesh. Day temperatures over West Uttar Pradesh are likely to remain around C and increase after two days. Rain / thundershowers with isolated squall are likely at a few places over East Uttar Pradesh. This rainfall activity is likely to keep the day temperatures below normal. There was no significant rainfall in the state except in Bahraich and Barabanki in East U.P and Bareilly, Bijnor and Saharanpur in West UP and dust storm/ thunderstorm is likely over the West UP and rain / thundershowers with isolated squall are likely at a few places over East U.P for next three days. Under the circumstances, apply frequent irrigation to sugarcane, vegetables, sunflower and mango in West UP. Apply irrigation in Esat UP depending on the rainfall situation. As there was rain in the above mentioned districts during last week, apply irrigation as per the soil moisture condition. Spray the solution of Endosulphon litre / hectare to control Agola borer insect in summer crops of sugarcane in West UP. Spraying may be continued on a non rainy day in East UP To control white ant in sunflower, spray the solution of chloropyriphos 3.75 litre / ha in water in West UP. Spraying may be continued on a non rainy day in East UP. Himachal Pradesh The precipitation occurred at isolated places during the week. The rain / thundershower is likely at isolated places in the State. As there was no significant rainfall in Chamba district during last few weeks and rain is likely to occur only at isolated places over the State for next three days, apply irrigation to peas, onion, summer vegetables and moong in this district. As the remaining districts of the State received excess rain during last week, apply irrigation depending on soil stored moisture. Attack of aphids is reported in the seed crop of cole crops. For control spray 1ml per litre of water. This is proper time for sowing of bhindi in middle hills (var. Prabhani Kranti, Arka Anamika), frenchbean (var. Conender) and sowing of nursery of cucumber, summer squash, bitter gourd and ridge gourd in poly houses. It is time for transplanting and nursery sowing of brinjal (Arka Nidhi, PPC), Capsicum (California wonder) and tomato in poly houses. Uttaranchal Light to moderate rain accompanied with hail / squall was recorded at isolated places on 7 th May and at most places on 8 th May. Mainly dry weather prevailed during rest of the period. Sky remained mainly clear to generally cloudy. Isolated rain / thundershowers are likely over the state. As there was no significant rain in the State during last few weeks and isolated rain / thundershowers are likely over the State for next few days, apply irrigation to mango, litchi, apple, sugarcane and vegetables, in all districts except in Almora and Dehradun, which received excess rain during last

3 week. Complete spraying of ppm (90 ml in 0 litres) to prevent fruit fall in mango. Jammu & Kashmir Rain / thundershowers occurred at few places on 9 th and 10 th May. Weather remained mainly dry on 8 th May in Jammu & Kashmir. Isolated rain / thundershowers are likely over Jammu & Kashmir. There was normal rainfall in the State during last week and isolated rain / thundershowers is likely to occur for the next three days over Jammu & Kashmir. Under the circumstances, apply required irrigation to summer vegetables, pulses, rice and maize to bring the soil moisture to its field capacity. Delhi Dust Storm occurred on 9 th May from northerly direction with wind speed 15kts. Sky remained partly cloudy with wind speed ranging between 2 4 knots. Weather remained dry. Isolated dust storm / thunder storm are likely over the state. As there was no significant rainfall during last few weeks and isolated dust storm / thunder storm are likely over the state for next three days, apply irrigation to summer vegetable crops, onion, green gram, black gram and fodder crops. Continue sowing of arhar and Pusa Chetki variety of radish with irrigation facilities. Select varieties like Upas 1 and T21 for sowing of arhar. Southern Region (AP, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Kerala) Kerala Rain / thundershower occurred at isolated places in Kerala on 08 th to 10 th May. Rain / thundershowers likely to occur at a few places over the State. Attack of mahali disease is reported in arecanut. Spray Boardeaux mixture 1% on a non-rainy day. Continue new planting, intercultural operation, plant protection operation and operations in coconut, arecanut and rubber on a non rainy day. There was no significant rainfall in Kerala except in Kollam, Kottayam, Malappuram, Pathanamthitta and Thrissur districts during last week and rainfall is likely to occur at a few places for the next three days. Under the circumstances, apply required irrigation to plantation crops and pepper depending on the rainfall situation. Apply irrigation, if required, depending on soil profile stored moisture and rainfall situation in the above mentioned districts as there was excess rainfall during last week. Tamilnadu Rainfall occurred at isolated places over the state on 8 th and 9 th May, over Interior Tamilnadu on 10 th May and dry weather prevailed over Coastal Tamilnadu on 10 th May. Rain / thundershowers likely at a few places over the State. There was no significant rainfall in all the districts during last week except in Perambalur, Sivagangai, Thiruvarur, Theni, Thanjavur, Tuticorin and Virudunagar and rainfall is likely to occur at a few places for the next three days in the State. Under the circumstances, apply required irrigation to navarai rice, early sugarcane and millets depending on the rainfall situation. Apply irrigation, if required, depending on soil profile stored moisture and rainfall

4 situation in the above mentioned districts as there was excess rainfall during last week. Karnataka Rainfall occurred at isolated places on 9 th and 10 th May over Coastal Karnataka. Over North Interior Karnataka, rainfall occurred at a few places on 10 th May and at isolated places on the remaining days. Over South Interior Karnataka, rainfall occurred at a few places on 9 th & 10 th May and at isolated places on the remaining days. Rain / thundershowers are likely at a few places over South Interior Karnataka, and isolated over the coastal and North Interior Karnataka. There was excess rainfall in coastal and North Interior Karnataka during last week except Bagalkote district and isolated rain / thundershowers are likely for the next three days. Under the circumstances, apply irrigation to summer rice, summer groundnut, summer sunflower and sugarcane depending on soil profile stored moisture. Apply required irrigation in Bagalkote district to bring the soil moisture to its field capacity. There was no significant rainfall in South Interior Karnataka during last week except in Bangalore urban, Bellary, Chikmaglur, Chitradurga, Hassan, Shimoga and Tumkur districts and rain / thundershowers are likely at a few places over South Interior Karnataka. Under the circumstances, apply irrigation to summer rice, summer groundnut, summer sunflower and sugarcane depending on the rainfall situation. As the above mentioned districts received rainfall during last week, apply irrigation in these districts depending on soil stored moisture and rainfall situation. Maintain 3 5cm of water in the field of rice. Release predators like Dipha sp, adopt wider spacing and inter-cropping with soyabean and pulses of short duration for ratoon sugarcane to control wooly aphids in Mysore, Mandya, Hassan, Bidar & Bagalore districts. Andhra Pradesh Isolated rain occurred over Coastal Andhra Pradesh on 4 th, 6 th and 7 th May, over Telangana on 4 th and 9 th May and over Rayalseema on 9 th and 10 th May. Weather has been mainly dry over Telangana on 6 th May, dry elsewhere over the State during the week. Isolated rain / thunder showers are likely to occur over Rayalaseema and dry weather is likely to prevail in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Maximum temperatures were above normal in Rayalaseema during last week. All the crops are at stage. Hence, complete of rabi maize, sunflower, rice and groundnut immediately to avoid shattering of grains. Eastern Region (Assam, Bihar, Sikkim, West Bengal) Assam Light to moderate rain occurred at isolated places on 8 th and 9 th May and weather was mainly dry over the State. Rain / thundershowers with isolated squall are likely at a few places over the State. Rainfall activity is likely to increase after 48 hrs. As there was excess rain in Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur districts of the State during last week and rain is likely to occur at a few places during next three days, postpone irrigation to the crops in these districts. As there was no significant rain in the remaining districts of the State during last week and rain is likely to occur at a few places during next three days, apply irrigation to summer

5 vegetables, jute and maize crops depending on rainfall situation. Maintain 3 5 cm water in early ahu rice field. Infestation of insects like Rice hispa, Yellow stem borer and Gallmidge is reported in early ahu rice in few localities. For control of pests like Hispa, Stem borer and Gall midge of early ahu rice plant protection measures should be taken on a non-rainy day when one adult per hill is noticed with monocrotophos ml per litre or chloropyriphos 2 ml per litre of water. For management of yellow stem borer advocate Trichograma 50,000 / ha with six releases. Infestation of insects like Bihar hairy caterpillar, Semi looper, Yellow mite and Stem weevil and diseases is reported in jute in few localities. For control of Bihar hairy caterpillar, Semi looper, Yellow mite and Stem weevil, spray Fenitrothion 50 1 ml or Endosulphon 35 2 ml / litre of water on a non-rainy day. Infestation of Fruit fly is reported in summer vegetables in few localities. Harvest and damage the fruits infected by Fruit fly in cucurbits and use bait to capture the fruit fly so that the pest may be managed below ETL (Economic Threshold Level). West Bengal Most of the districts of the State received excess rainfall during last week except Murshidabad, Dinajpur, Darjeeling, Coochbehar and Malda where it was deficient, scanty or no rain. Rain / thundershowers with isolated squall are likely at a few places over the State. This rainfall activity is likely to keep the day temperatures below normal. As Bankura, Burdwan, Hooghly, Howrah, 24 Parganas (S), Nadia and Midnapore districts received excess rain during last week and rain / thundershowers with isolated squall are likely at a few places over the State for next three days, apply irrigation to sugarcane, sesame, groundnut and green gram in all these districts depending on soil stored moisture and rainfall situation, if required. As there was no significant rain in remaining districts of the State during last week, apply irrigation in these districts depending on rainfall situation. Continue sowing of aus rice in North Bengal and jute on a non-rainy day. Select varieties of aus rice from IET 826, CR , IR 36, IET 2233, IET 1444 (Rasi), Culture 1 etc. Bihar Rain occurred at most places on 5 th & 3 rd May and weather was dry during rest days. Rain / thundershower with isolated squall are likely at a few places in Bihar. There was no significant rainfall in the state during last week and rain / thundershowers with isolated squall are likely to occur at a few places over the state for the next three days. Under the circumstances, apply irrigation to summer vegetables, maize, moong, fodder and fruit crops depending on the rainfall situation. Monitor Boro rice and summer rice crops for gundhi bug attack, if population is more spray Aldrin 2.5% in the morning hours in non-rainy days. Maintain 5-7cm water in rice field. Sikkim Sky remained generally cloudy during the period. Rain / thunder showers with isolated squall are likely at a few places over the State. This rainfall

6 activity is likely to keep the day temperatures below normal. There was deficient rainfall in the state during last week and rainfall is likely to occur at a few places for the next three days. Under the circumstances, apply required irrigation to orange, maize, potato and large cardamom depending on the rainfall situation. Rouge out chirke and foorkey affected large cardamom plants and destroy them by burning. Continue sowing / transplanting of kharif vegetable crops on a non rainy day. Central Region (Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, MP & Orissa) Gujarat Weather remained dry. Mainly dry weather will be over Gujarat State, Diu, Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli. As there was no rain in the State for past few weeks and mainly dry weather will prevail for next three days, apply irrigation to sugarcane, summer groundnut and summer bajra to bring the soil moisture to its field capacity. Maintain 5 7 cm water in the rice field. Chattisgarh Weather over the State will remain hot and dry with day temperatures over most parts of the region ranging from C. However, isolated thunderstorm may occur over the State. Except for the crops grown at Bastar, Bilaspur, Dhamtari and Raigarh districts, apply frequent irrigation to sugarcane, onion, sunflower, groundnut, sesame, green gram and also to early sown summer vegetables in all the districts of the State as there was no significant rain during last couple of weeks and no significant rain is likely to occur and weather will remain hot and dry over the State during next three days. As there was excess rain at Bastar, Bilaspur, Dhamtari and Raigarh districts during last week, apply irrigation as per requirement. Continue sowing of summer vegetables like ladies finger, beans, bottle gourd etc. Maharashtra Light rain occured at isolated places in South Madhya Maharashtra & Konkan. Mainly dry weather prevailed over rest of the State. Heat wave conditions prevailed over North Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha. Mainly dry weather will prevail over the State. As there was no significant rainfall during last week in most of the districts of the State and weather will be mainly dry for next three days with high day temperature, apply frequent irrigation to sugarcane, summer groundnut, sunflower, green gram and maize and also to already sown irrigated cotton to supplement the high rate of transpiration from the crops. Maintain 5 7 cm water in summer rice field. Continue of matured crops in Sindhudurg district. Second dose of 100 kg Nitrogen / ha mixed with Neem cake in 6:1 proportion may be applied to sugarcane. Continue sowing of irrigated cotton. For sowing select the seeds from improved varieties like L.R.H. 5166, J.L.H. 168 or hybrid varieties from Phule 492, N.H.H. 44. Use 8-10 Kg. / ha of improved variety & Kg. / ha of hybrid variety for sowing.

7 Madhya Pradesh Dry weather prevailed over the State.Heat wave conditions prevailed in parts of west and north east M.P on 8 th over the state on 9 th and in west M.P on 10 th May. Weather over the State will remain hot and dry with day temperatures over most parts of the region ranging from C. Isolated duststorm / thunderstorm may occur over north Madhya Pradesh towards afternoon / evening. Apply frequent irrigation to sugarcane and moong in all the districts except Jabalpur to make the soil moist, as no significant rain occurred during last week and mainly dry and hot weather is likely over the State with possibility of isolated duststorm / thunderstorm over north Madhya Pradesh towards afternoon / evening. Orissa Rain fall occurred at a few places over Orissa on 3 rd May and at isolated places on remaining days. Light rain / thundershower likely to occur at isolated places over Orissa. As there was no significant rainfall in Bargarh, Boudhgarh, Deogarh, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Koraput, Nawapara, Nawarangpur, Sonepur and Rayagada districts of the State during last week and rain / thundershowers with isolated squall are likely at a few places for next three days, apply irrigation to pulses, vegetables, groundnut and sugarcane in these districts depending on rainfall situation. As there was excess rainfall in remaining districts of the State during last week, apply irrigation in these districts depending on soil stored moisture and rainfall situation. It was deficient over the rest of the country outside Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura, Gujarat region, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, where it was scanty. TEMPERATURES: Severe heat wave conditions prevailed on 5 days in Haryana and Rajasthan and on 1 day in some parts of Orissa and west Madhya Pradesh. Heat wave conditions prevailed on 3 to 4 days in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha and on 1 to 2 days in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Jammu. Heat wave conditions also prevailed at isolated places in west Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab. Hot day conditions prevailed on 1 to 2 days in Haryana, Rajasthan and Marathwada. Day temperatures were markedly above normal on 2 days in Kashmir. They were appreciably above normal on 3 to 4 days in Punjab, Jammu, east Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and on 1 to 2 days in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura, Haryana, Kashmir, west Rajasthan and Vidarbha. They were above normal on 5 to 7 days in Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura, west Rajasthan and Saurashtra & Kutch and on 3 to 4 days in west Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, east Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Madhya Maharashtra and on 1 to 2 days in Assam & Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Jharkhand, Bihar, Gujarat region, Marathwada, Vidarbha, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu and north interior Karnataka. WEATHER AND ASSOCIATED SYNOPTIC FEATURES: (1) Last week s trough/ wind discontinuity at 0.9 km a.s.l. from east Rajasthan to north coastal Tamil Nadu persisted throughout the week, with its northern end moving eastwards across west Madhya Pradesh, east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Its southern end moved from Tamil Nadu to Kerala and back to Tamil Nadu. On the last day of the week, it was seen running from Chattisgarh to south Tamil Nadu through Vidarbha, Telangana and Rayalaseema. (2) Last week s western disturbance as an upper air system extending upto 3.6 km a.s.l. over Jammu & Kashmir and neighbourhood moved away northeastwards on 4 th. (3) A western disturbance as an upper air system extending upto 3.6 km a.s.l. over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir on 5 th moved away northeastwards across Jammu & Kashmir on 9 th. (4) Another western disturbance as an upper air system extending upto 4.5 km a.s.l. over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu & Kashmir on 8 th was seen lying over Jammu & Kashmir on 10 th. (5) A trough of low at sea level was seen over southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area on 9 th. It moved westwards to southeast Arabian Sea on 10 th. (6) An east-west trough at 0.9 km a.s.l. was seen running from west Rajasthan to Gangetic West Bengal through Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on 7 th. It persisted on 8 th & 9 th and on 10 th it was seen running from Punjab to Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura through Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. (7) Last week s cyclonic circulation extending upto 1.5 km a.s.l. over west Rajasthan became less marked on 4 th. (8) Last week s cyclonic circulation extending upto 1.5 km a.s.l. over Uttaranchal and neighbourhood on 4 th became less marked on 5 th. (9) Last week s cyclonic circulation extending upto 2.1 km a.s.l. over south Tamil Nadu on 4 th moved westwards to Lakshadweep area on 5 th and on 6 th, it moved away further westwards and became unimportant. (10) Last week s cyclonic circulation extending upto 1.5 km a.s.l. over east Uttar Pradesh became less marked on 4 th. (11) A cyclonic circulation extending upto 0.9 km a.s.l. was seen over central Pakistan and adjoining west Rajasthan on 5 th. Further extending upto 1.5 km a.s.l, it moved eastwards over Haryana and west Uttar Pradesh subsequently and on 10 th, it became less marked over west Uttar Pradesh. (12) A cyclonic circulation extending upto 0.9 km a.s.l. was seen over Gangetic West Bengal on 6 th. Moving westwards on 10 th it was seen over Jharkhand and neighbourhood extending upto 2.1 km a.s.l. (13) A cyclonic circulation between 3.1 & 5.8 km a.s.l. was seen over south Andaman Sea and neighbourhood on 6 th. Persisting in situ subsequently, it was seen over north Andaman Sea and neighbourhood on 10 th. (14) A cyclonic circulation between 3.6 & 5.8 km a.s.l. over Lakshadweep area on 8 th became less marked over the same area on 9 th. Heavy rain occurred on 1 to 2 days in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and interior Karnataka.
