12 Eclipse 101 A solar eclipse is a lineup of the Sun, the Moon, and Earth.

13 Three Types of Solar Eclipse Our daytime star s diameter is approximately 400 times larger than that of the Moon. What a coincidence that it also lies roughly 400 times farther away. This means both disks appear to be the same size.

14 Frequency of Solar Eclipse Types Eclipses per Year: 2 to 7 ( solar / 3 lunar) ( solar / 4 lunar) Totals per Year: 0, 1 or 2 Partial 35% Annular 33% Total 27% Hybrid 5% It's all about magnitude and obscuration. 19 Only during totality is safe to look at * Available at the OMSI Store! WARNING: The Sun can be viewed safely with the naked eye only during the few brief seconds or minutes of a total solar eclipse. ParHal eclipses, annular eclipses, and the parhal phases of total eclipses are never safe to watch without taking special precauhons. Even when 99% of the Sun s surface is obscured during the parhal phases of a total eclipse, the remaining photospheric crescent is intensely bright and cannot be viewed safely without eye protechon. Do not amempt to observe the parhal or annular phases of any eclipse with the naked eye. Failure to use appropriate filtrahon may result in permanent eye damage or blindness!
