8 Bermuda The Area of Transition is located about 1000 kilometers southeast of Bermuda The umbra is just some hundred meters up to a few kilometers wide and moves from west to east with about km/h To enable eclipse observations not only from the cockpit the umbra has to be approached rectangularly Crossing this small fast moving umbra requires a precise timing, that exceeds the usual capabilities of navigation systems (FMS) on board

11 Solar EclipseFlight Procedure 1 Check Feasibility Based on a rough concept of the flight intention it becomes clear if the objective is feasible organizationally, logistically and financially

12 Solar EclipseFlight Procedure 1 2 Plan the project What has to be done until when, to enable the plane to take off in time

13 Solar EclipseFlight Procedure Find Passangers To finance the project other passengers have to be found and tickets to be sold The seats are offered depending on windows geometry and visibility of the sun Observational and seat related wishes are being discussed with the interested persons Seats are being assigned, payments and formalities being processed

14 Solar EclipseFlight Procedure Charter the plane On the island of Bermuda a plane is being found that is well suitable for the observation, and that is still available on eclipse day, including the crew, and that is positioned near to the eclipse area The plane is being chartered Further steps are taken together with the pilot, the aviation company and navigation experts

16 Solar Eclipse Flight Procedure Fixing the flight plan On the evening before departure the final flight route and procedure for eclipse day is being defined

17 Solar Eclipse Flight Procedure Conduct Briefing In a briefing all passengers get explained the procedure and features of the flight

18 Solar EclipseFlight Procedure Fly intotheumbra Coming from Bermuda firstly a defined point near the eclipse zone is headed for, to then depart from there at the right time to cross the umbral path HSE_2013_EFlight_Bermuda_XMJubier.mp4 After flying a waiting loop and two curves to get rid of spare time the final course is rectangular to the umbral path. Then we re crossing the umbra (just a few kilometers small) at the required seconds ( totality run )

19 Solar Eclipse Flight Procedure Objective achieved! For a few seconds sunlight at the lunar edge shines through some moon valleys successively (multiple diamond ring), for others simultaneously (Baily s beads effect) to then merge together to one single point of light left in a deep lunar valley. All around the moon a red ring of solar chromosphere is visible to then vanish in the shine of a second multiple diamond ring

24 and when the umbra is long Especially near the polar regions the lunar shadow can become very long. Also there can be flown in the direction of the umbral track On 20. March 2015 a Total Solar Eclipse appeared over the sea between Scotland, Iceland and the Faröer islands. The umbra extended over approx. 150 x 460 km and due to its size it generated an impressive darkening of the clouds about 10km below flight altitude At this solar eclipse we flew the same course the umbra was heading, so the duration of totality was extended by about one minute compared to a stationary observation on the ground B021 Flying through the Umbra x.mp

25 When is the next one? The next total solar eclipse takes place over the Pacific Ocean and South America on 2nd July 2019 The next transitional solar eclipse is on 20th April 2023 over the southern Indian Ocean, Australia and the Pacific The next total solar eclipse over a polar area takes place on 04th December 2021 over Antarctica
