ACE IN THE HOLE: Kelsee Selman filling Baylor softball s role of ace in the circle Waco Tribune-Herald By: John Werner March 30, 2017 Baylor s pitching staff has been stacked with aces for a long time. The Lady Bears have seen a parade of all-big 12 pitchers like Cristin Vitek, Lisa Ferguson, Whitney Canion and Heather Stearns. Following Canion s first-team All-American season in 2014, Stearns proved to be a worthy successor with two superb seasons. Coming into this season, Baylor coach Glenn Moore didn t know who his next ace would be. But he was convinced that any pitcher who stepped into that role would have a great chance to thrive because Baylor s offense is so loaded. Kelsee Selman has seized the opportunity and run with it. Nobody has played a more important role in No. 13 Baylor s 29-6 season. The senior right-hander has fashioned a 15-3 record with a 1.45 ERA, and earned Big 12 pitcher of the week for the second time after two impressive starting performances in Baylor s Big 12 opening series win over Kansas last weekend. She hasn t just been good this year she s been outstanding against unbelievable lineups, said Baylor coach Glenn Moore. I don t know if dominating is the proper word but she s certainly pitched effectively day in and day out. We knew the potential was there for her to be our ace, and Kelsee has separated herself. Selman was among four candidates to step into Baylor s lead pitching role. While Gia Rodoni and freshman Shelby McGlaun have both produced good numbers and Kendall Potts has been injured, Selman has been the pitcher Baylor has counted on the most. Selman proved she was ready for prime time when she went 3-0 with a save in the first week of March in the prestigious Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif. She threw a two-hit shutout against No. 14 Michigan, pitched a complete game against No. 7 Washington and picked up a win in relief against No. 8 UCLA. She also nailed down a save against No. 20 Arizona State. I knew I had to step up because we played teams ranked ahead of us, Selman said. I believed I could do it and we were all prepared for it. I threw strikes and the defense made plays. This has definitely been the year I hoped for. The team has helped me tremendously and hopefully I can end on a strong note. While Baylor s offense has been as good as advertised, a quick look inside Selman s numbers show why she s been so dominant. Her strikeout-to-walk ratio is 98 to 19 in 106 innings. That s a dramatic improvement from last season when she went 5-3 with a 2.75 ERA and walked 36 and struck out 35 in 48 1/3 innings. We talk about having one walk to every three strikeouts but she s well above that, said Baylor pitching coach Britni Sneed Newman. That s a 180-degree turn from last year. She s been in the zone, keeping it simple and having fun. She s a great leader in the circle for us and picks her teammates up and is constantly out there talking to them and keeping them positive. Selman is having the kind of fun now that she had at Lufkin Hudson High School where she was the ace of two Class 3A state championship teams in 2012 and She was a high school All-American pitcher who was also the cleanup hitter in a powerful lineup. Widely recruited out of high school, Selman chose LSU over Baylor, Texas and other schools. She had two good years for the Tigers as she compiled a 15-3 record, including a 9-0 record with a 1.47 ERA as a sophomore in But with LSU bringing in more pitchers, Selman was concerned that she would be squeezed out of playing time and decided to transfer to Baylor. Though Selman enjoyed some good moments last season, she often struggled with her control and her approach to the game. I decided to transfer because I wanted to go somewhere that I could get a lot of pitching time, Selman said. I got off to a pretty good start last year but then I struggled a few games in a row. I was focusing too much on throwing strikes. I made that too big of a deal. This year I simply let them hit the ball and let our defense make plays. Selman has more effectively mixed her pitches this season, complementing her riseball and screwball with a changeup that has kept hitters off balance. She often puts in extra time to improve her game. She leads by example by always working hard, said Baylor third baseman Lindsey Cargill. Every time I come up here, she s always working on her pitching. She always does things when no one is watching to stay on top of things. As the season has progressed, Selman has put up bigger strikeout numbers. Pitching for the third straight day against Kansas, she matched her career high with 10 strikeouts in Sunday s 5-1 win. I think she s going to get a strikeout every single time, Cargill said. But she believes in our defense. She knows when hitters put the ball in play we re going to pick her up. Our whole team is confident in her and that makes her more confident. Though Selman wants to shut down every lineup she faces, she feels a sense of security knowing that she doesn t have to carry the whole load because Baylor s offense is so productive. One of my favorite things is being the visiting team because we hit first and I get to watch them compete, Selman said. I ve heard pitchers say this is one of the hardest lineups 1 through 9 to throw to because they attack every pitch.

Atascocita's Shelby McGlaun thriving for Baylor softball Houston Chronicle By: Jason McDaniel April 6, 2017 Shelby 'Goose' McGlaun arrived at Baylor with a big name, a big bat and even bigger expectations. She's already having a huge impact, too. "She's the real deal, no doubt about it," Baylor coach Glenn Moore said. The 2016 Atascocita graduate leads the nationally ranked Bears with eight home runs, she's second with 27 RBIs and she's their hardestthrowing pitcher, helping fuel the Big 12's best winning percentage. The Bears are 32-6 overall and 5-1 in conference. "I didn't know what to expect when I came in," McGlaun said. "I just knew I was going to come in, work hard and fight for a starting spot, and then once I earned that I realized that's not where the work stops. "So I've got to keep working because the game is changing every day." An imposing presence McGlaun's changing every day, for the better. The 5-8 freshman power hitter is batting.293 on the season, but she's at.341 in her past 14 games, and.364 in the past seven. She homered in three straight games last week - all wins for Baylor. "We thought we would get four good years out of her, and she's certainly started off making a name for herself," Moore said. The 17th-year Baylor coach said she put too much pressure on herself early. So, after penciling her into the top half of the order to start the season, anywhere from third to fifth, Moore moved her to seventh for the Judi Garman Classic in California, where she rediscovered her swing. McGlaun hit her second homer in a win over then-no. 14 Michigan, then went 4-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs in a win against then-no. 7 UCLA, helping the Bears top four straight ranked teams. "She's an imposing figure in the box, and as a former pitcher myself she doesn't visually give you any starting points," Moore said. "If you don't know her weakness, it's hard to look at her and find one, so a lot of times she'll start off ahead in the count because coaches are trying to find that first move." Teammates benefit Now she's settling in as the Bears' No. 5 hitter, right behind former All-American first baseman Shelby Friudenberg. The junior hit 18 home runs two years ago but didn't see many great pitches last year, before McGlaun's arrival. With the new freshman slugger behind her, pitchers no longer can work around her. Friudenberg has six homers and a team-leading 33 RBIs. "Being able to be behind her, and protect her in the lineup, is huge, and especially being able to learn from her," McGlaun said. "She'll help me out in the mistakes that I make, and that creates a lineup that's even tougher to pitch to." McGlaun knows she's still learning, which makes her a little harder to retire every day. She's already come a long way from a 4-for-16 start the first five games, which included two hitless efforts. "It was more of a mental adjustment," McGlaun said. "I was psyching myself out at the plate. "It's really about learning to go up there with an approach and make sure I know what the pitcher's going to throw, but the mental side was a huge adjustment, going from high school to here. "High school wasn't as challenging, and here everybody can play ball, everybody's on the same level, so that definitely was tough to come into." Potential ace And that's only her stick. McGlaun is a hard-throwing righty who's already hitting 67 to 68 mph, with 70 equivalent to a 100-mph baseball. She's currently third in the rotation, behind senior Kelsee Selman (17-3, 1.34 ERA) and sophomore Gia Rodoni (10-1, 1.96 ERA), and serving primarily as a middle reliever and closer in conference. But Moore sees her as their potential ace of the future. McGlaun's 5-2 with a 1.81 ERA in five starts, which came in tourney play, 15 appearances and 50 1/3 innings. She also boasts two saves and 48 strikeouts. "When you throw 67, 68, you're going to get your fair share of outs and your fair share of mis-hits, and we've got a good defense behind her," Moore said. That's why McGlaun's coming up big now and looking for bigger things to come. "I'm pretty comfortable," she said. "We have two other great pitchers who I'm able to play behind and learn from. That way, when I get in their position in years to come, I'll have experience. I enjoy being able to come into games and help our other arms, to save them for later in the season. But I like being able to hit as well, score us some runs, and then being able to come in and shut the game out is awesome."

Newcomer Trio Making Impact with No. 13 Softball Baylor Bear Foundation By: Jerry Hill May 7, 2017 Taylor Ellis first caught Glenn Moore s eye when she was playing for Midway at the 2011 Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Ore. She s at shortstop and went out about halfway and took the ball from the leftfielder and throws a strike to home plate, Moore said. And ESPN kept replaying it over and over. I pick up the phone and called (associate head coach Mark Lumley) and say, Hey, are you watching the Little League World Series? He said he was, and I said, I want this Ellis kid in green and gold one day. Ellis was 12 years old at the time. One day is now. The talented shortstop is one of three freshmen in the starting lineup for the 13thranked Baylor Lady Bears (32-6, 5-1), who host Iowa State (15-24, 0-6) in a three-game series this weekend at Getterman Stadium. Growing up, it was always a dream of mine to come to Baylor, said Ellis, who is hitting.258 with a combined 28 starts at shortstop, second base and catcher. I would come to the games with my dad and watch awesome players like Brette Regan and Chelsi Lake, people that I really idolized. When I was younger, coming here was sort of like an out-of-reach type of thing. As I got older, it became more realistic. And now that I m here, it s a dream come true. Every day I put on the Baylor green is a special day. With Ellis joining pitcher/outfielder Shelby Goose McGlaun from Humble, Texas, and outfielders Maddison Kettler from West and Madi O Neal from Huffman, Moore said he knew all along that this would be one of the best incoming freshman classes we ve ever had here. The top-rated recruit in the state, McGlaun has lived up to the hype with a.293 batting average, 27 RBI and a team-best eight home runs and is 5-2 with a 1.81 ERA in the circle. Kettler has started all but one game and is hitting.357 with 10 stolen bases and 12 RBI, while O Neal has been used primarily as a pinch-runner and is hitting.333 in limited plate appearances. Especially having them as friends as well, McGlaun said, when we struggle, we can all relate to each other, because we re all still learning the ropes. The learning curve has not been a big one, though. Particularly for the three freshmen in the starting lineup, it s been a fairly seamless transition. This team has great athletes, so I definitely had to work hard coming in, said Kettler, who has been a rock as the everyday leftfielder. I didn t expect to step right on the field. But, when the opportunity was there, I took it. That was the case with Ellis, too. An infielder basically her whole life, she was expected to come in and back up returning starter Caitlin Charlton at shortstop. But, going into her last summer of travel ball with Texas Glory, she was hit with a strange request. Moore asked her, What do you think about catching? It was kind of a shocking moment for me. I was like, What? said Ellis, who was named the Waco Tribune-Herald Super Centex Player of the Year in 2015, when she hit.531 with 17 stolen bases and 39 RBI. But, I m the type of player that you can pretty much stick me where you want and I m going to do my best and give my all for the team, regardless of what it looks like. After losing a catching prospect late in the recruiting process, Moore was forced to make a decision on whether to find another one or try to make one out of somebody like Taylor. Ellis always felt like she had the arm for it, but she went to school over the summer scouring over training video tapes and doing what she could to improve at the position. And I ve been continuing that. I m just excited to contribute to the team any way I can, so that s been a blessing. With Charlton dealing with injuries, Ellis started the season at short and is back there now after splitting some time with Sydney Christensen at catcher and filling in at second base when Ari Hawkins was sick. At the beginning of the year, you see people in the stands that you know, Ellis said. Everybody knows you, everybody s expecting you to be something great. And I think from the start, I was pressing a little bit, wanting to be like the hometown hero.... My parents have helped me a lot with that. When I started out pressing, struggling a little bit, my parents said, Hey, even if you never step foot on that field, we re proud of you. It was a different kind of pressure for McGlaun, who had to deal with the hype of being the top-rated recruit in the state. So when I failed at first, it was kind of a deflating thing, especially in my mind, she said. I think early on, opposing coaches would look at her batting average and think, We can pitch to this girl, Moore said. But, she s become the hitter that we thought she could be. She s a scary hitter. Last week, McGlaun hit homers in three consecutive games. In a three-game sweep of Texas Tech, McGlaun hit.429 and combined with Kettler and Ellis to account for nearly half of the Lady Bears hits (13 of 30) and RBI (five of 11). I just had to get to that point where (I realized) bad things are going to happen I m going to strike out, I m going to pop out, she said. It s just how I respond to those things and how I come back and make adjustments. I think it definitely helped me in the beginning, failing a little bit, just because I had to grow as a player as well as a person to get through it. Originally recruited as an outfielder and hitter, McGlaun is now throwing 70 mph from the circle and is developing an off-speed, which is the No. 1 pitch you need after you throw hard, Moore said. The fact that she can throw as hard as a freshman as Whitney Canion was throwing her senior year is pretty impressive, because Whitney could bring it, Moore said. Like Ellis, her teammate on the Texas Glory select team, Kettler dreamed of playing for the Lady Bears at an early age. Of course, I was looking at other places, said Kettler, who was the Super Centex Player of the Year last season when she hit.645 with five homers, 49 RBI and 22 stolen bases and led West to its first state championship. But, I was just waiting for Baylor. And when that offer was there, I took it. While she played shortstop for her high school team, Kettler was an outfielder in select ball and is very comfortable in left field. It s kind of my domain, I guess you would say. The freshman trio have a comfort zone, knowing that if one of them is off, the other players will pick up the slack. Met and Kett have history together, Ellis said. We played together, so we re really comfortable with each other, we re roommates. Really, that s the best thing I could have asked for, coming in.... When we re struggling, I can say, Hey, you re doing this. And she counter and say, Well, you re doing this. So really, we kind of make each other better.

Friudenberg producing at record rate for Baylor Temple Daily Telegram By: Tim Waits April 8, 2017 During an age in which many young athletes are pushed to focus on a single sport of choice, there are still plenty of examples that prove variety doesn t hamper a player s progress. Exhibit A could be Shelby Friudenberg. Playing five sports at Bruceville-Eddy didn t hamper Friudenberg s development as one of the best to ever don a softball uniform for Baylor. The junior first baseman is methodically moving up the career list as one of the most productive power hitters the Lady Bears have known. Playing different sports in high school was something I always wanted to do, said Friudenberg, who lettered in volleyball, basketball, track, tennis and softball during her days as a Lady Eagle. I grew up going to a variety of sporting events to watch my sister compete so it made me want to follow in her footsteps. Softball was always my main priority and consumed most of my focus, but being able to play different sports taught me how to be a well-rounded athlete. Competing in different sports helped me improve my skill set in softball as well as the sport I was training for. If Friudenberg s pace holds up through the remainder of this season and next, she will be Baylor s career home run and RBI leader. She ranked fifth in both categories heading into the weekend s home series against Iowa State. Her 35 home runs are nine behind leader Chelsi Lake, who graduated 10 years ago. Friudenberg, at 130 RBIs, is 54 behind Lake. If the records happen, they happen. But they aren t the be-all and end-all for Friudenberg. Ultimately, statistics have never been a major motivator for me, she said. I focus on the task at hand more so than how my numbers will end up at the close of the season. I would love to shatter records, but I want to enjoy the process at the same time. Friudenberg is an indispensable member of 13th-ranked Baylor, having started all 38 games this season and almost every game since she arrived on campus. She is among the Lady Bears top five in most of the significant offensive categories this season, leading them in RBIs (33) and walks (17), second in home runs (six), third in both slugging percentage (.536) and on base percentage (.431) and fifth in batting average (.345). Friudenberg s 18 home runs as a freshman were a team record and helped her earn third-team All-American honors and a first-team spot on the All-Big 12 squad. She homered 11 times as sophomore and is still driving in runs at a productive clip. My swing has stayed the same throughout my years at Baylor, she said. As a freshman, there are not many scouting reports on you and your weaknesses aren t known. Opposing pitchers may have adapted to Friudenberg to some extent, but she continues to keep pace with them. She came here well known in Central Texas but virtually unknown outside of this area, Baylor coach Glenn Moore said. That s why she saw pitches her freshman year and hasn t since. Eighteen home runs will put you in the do not pitch category. All great hitters have to deal with careful pitching. In Shelby s case, last year s teams continued to pitch around her even though we had two very good hitters backing her up. Moore is quick to remind that Friudenberg is far from onedimensional. Everyone thinks hitting when her name is mentioned and rightly so, but her defensive game is superb and is under-appreciated by default, he said. Shelby is the whole package. As with most sluggers, Friudenberg has had memorable home runs, and one from two years ago still sticks out. That would have to be against UCLA my freshman year, she said. It was the most solid home run I ever hit and it tied the game 2-2 in the top of the seventh. I had struggled all game but was able to break through during my last at-bat. Baylor is battling Oklahoma State and perennial powerhouse Oklahoma for the Big 12 title, and Friudenberg is excited about the Lady Bears prospects the rest of the season. I couldn t ask for better friends and teammates to take the field with, she said.

Confident Cargill brings versatility to Lady Bears Waco Tribune-Herald By: John Werner April 27, 2017 Lindsey Cargill might be the most versatile player to ever wear a Baylor softball uniform. She s played every position on the field except first base and pitcher. She pitched at Robinson High School four years ago, so she didn t think it was outlandish to ask Baylor pitching coach Britni Sneed Newman if she could give it a shot. She just thinks it s funny, Cargill said. But I m confident enough. Confidence has never been an issue for Cargill. It s evident in how close she gets to home plate when she plays third base. She almost dares batters to hit the ball her way even though she just started playing the position this year. I really love playing third base because you re in the game more, Cargill said. Out there (in the outfield) I want to yell and scream and no one will hear me. I actually want to get as close to possible. It kind of gives me an edge over them. Cargill takes the same aggressive approach at the plate. She leads the Big 12 with a.457 batting average and is on pace to break the Baylor single season record of.415 set by Kyla Walker last season. Through her first three seasons, Cargill hit.334 but she s been phenomenal this year for the No. 13 Lady Bears coming into this weekend s three-game series against Oklahoma State. Friday s 5 p.m. doubleheader will be followed by Saturday s 2 p.m. series finale at Getterman Stadium. If she had played at the level she had the first three years she would have still been one of our better players, said Baylor coach Glenn Moore. But she s gone to a whole nother level. She s more disciplined and we re doing more power slapping this year. Cargill saw how often Walker reached base last season as a slap hitter, and decided to make the switch from a conventional hitting approach. Batting left handed with tremendous speed, Cargill often beats out infield hits because she gets down the first base line so quickly. Cargill leads the Big 12 with 64 hits and 28 stolen bases and ranks fifth with 40 runs. She set a school record with a 22-game hitting streak that ended last weekend against Oklahoma. While Cargill has a phenomenal.503 on-base percentage, she s mature enough to take it in stride when she doesn t reach base. It s my senior year and I say let s not get upset every time I don t get on base, Cargill said. I just try to get contact on the ball. I ve tried to get something from all our slappers and put it into my game. When Cargill reaches base, Moore is confident enough to let her attempt to steal bases whenever she believes the time is right. He trusts her instincts. I ve given her more freedom on base to do what she wants to do because she s earned that, Moore said. Her timing is impeccable and the way she reads the defense. She s locked in. Cargill enjoyed a superb four-year career at Robinson and honed her game even more by playing for the Buzz travel team that was coached by her father, Mike Cargill. Moore has a roster filled with tremendous Central Texas talent. Six are starters including Cargill, first baseman Shelby Friudenberg from Bruceville-Eddy, shortstop Taylor Ellis from Midway, leftfielder Maddison Kettler from West, rightfielder Kyla Walker from Franklin and catcher Sydney Christensen from Crawford. Moore has recruited Central Texas more widely in recent years because his recruits have increased their skills by playing more travel ball against the best high school players in the state and across the country. The Central Texas talent is here, Moore said. It s just a matter of that talent being developed. Over the last 10 years there s been a huge commitment to developing it. We ve been able to recruit them and win because of their commitment. After finishing her Baylor career this spring, Cargill is considering playing professional softball for the Texas Charge which is based in San Marcos. After earning her bachelor s degree in business last year, she hopes to graduate in December with a master s degree in sport pedagogy. Cargill got engaged to Baylor baseball player Steven McLean on Easter and plans to get married in the summer of It was his birthday on Easter, Cargill said. I gave him his cake and he said I want to give you your birthday present early. All of a sudden he gets down on one knee and he asked me to marry him. Cargill wants to coach college softball but first she wants to help Baylor get back to the College World Series for the first time since 2014 when she was a freshman. She puts a smile on my face just thinking about Lindsey her whole career, Moore said. She s been a pleasure to coach and has brought it every day in practice and games. She s all about winning and competing. This community loves her and deservedly so because she s poured her heart into Baylor University.

Baylor's Kyla Walker had older sister as role model, rival Waco Tribune-Herald By: John Werner May 10, 2017 When Kyla Walker set Baylor s hitting record with a.415 average last season, she didn t have to dig deep into the record book to see who she passed. Before her kid sister came along, Kayce Walker tied Ashley Monceaux for the best single season in school history with a.413 batting average. Like Kyla, Kayce was a freshman when she earned a piece of the school record in I have no chance to break her record, so I have to live with this the rest of my life, Kayce Walker said. But I tell people I taught her everything she knows. Both the Walker sisters get a laugh out of their good natured rivalry, but there s a lot of respect between the two despite their seven-year age difference. Kyla has always seen her older sister as a role model and mentor, and still comes to her for hitting tips. Hitting has always kind of come naturally to me, but she s always helped me, Kyla said. We talk all the time. Last year, I was kind of nervous going into the season trying to live up to her. But she said go up there and hit and stop thinking about it. Kyla hasn t fallen victim to a sophomore slump. Heading into the Big 12 tournament Friday in Oklahoma City, the diminutive outfielder is hitting.409 and is tied with teammate Lindsey Cargill for the league lead with 72 hits. Cargill is on pace to set the Baylor hitting record with a leagueleading.459 average, but Walker has clearly shown her breakout freshman year was no fluke. If there s one thing I ll say, the horns kind of come out when Kyla plays, said Baylor coach Glenn Moore. She s got a little edge. Kyla s extremely competitive within herself, not necessarily with who s on the other side of the field. It s just a matter of being able to conquer whatever the task is. A natural left-hander, Walker is a slap hitter who uses her speed to beat out a lot of infield hits. Though she has just seven extrabase hits and no homers, she s stolen 18 bases and puts the heat on opposing teams with her base-running ability. Though the Baylor media guide lists her height at 5-2, she admits that might be a stretch. Maybe on a good day, Walker grins. She showed her competitive streak last year after missing the first three weeks of the season with a stress fracture in her back. Dying to get into the lineup, Walker singled in her first collegiate at-bat against Mississippi Valley State. Though the pitching kept getting tougher, Walker kept improving as the season progressed and hit a league-high.518 in conference games to make first-team all-big 12. Walker has reached base in a variety of ways to earn all-conference again this year. With power hitters, if they re in a slump, they re in a slump, Walker said. But with a slapper, if your power slap isn t working, you can soft slap or bunt. You can do so many more things. Speed never goes into a slump, so you just need to put the ball in play. Walker said she s been hitting since she could walk as she grew up watching Kayce play softball. Kayce could see her younger sister not only had the ability to be a potential star, but also had an inquisitive mind. Even when she was 4 years old, I always knew she had a great eye for detail, said Kayce, now a physical therapist in College Station. We d go to tournaments every week and she would be sitting in the stands critiquing me. She d say stuff like, Why did you pop up that bunt? Growing up in Franklin, one of Kyla s biggest thrills was watching Kayce play outfield for the Lady Bears at the 2011 Women s College World Series in Oklahoma City. She hopes to experience it as a player this season. It was very exciting sitting in the stands, and I could imagine playing there, Kyla said. I still remember all their highlights like Holly Holl and Kelsi Kettler hitting their home runs. Later that year, Kyla verbally committed to Baylor before playing her first game as a freshman at Franklin High School. She was already playing for the Impact Gold select league team out of Houston, and the Baylor coaches saw she was already good enough to offer a scholarship. I d like to think that says something about Baylor and Baylor softball for her to follow in her sister s footsteps, Moore said. She feels comfortable. She could have gone just about anywhere she wanted. She had seen the program inside and out and liked what she saw in the school and chose to come here. Walker enjoyed a remarkable career at Franklin as she hit.787 and led the Lions to three straight district championships. She made the Class 3A all-state softball team as a senior in 2015, a year after she guided the basketball team to a state semifinal appearance as a point guard. But she always knew her ticket to college would be as a softball player, and she credits coach K.J. Jackson of the Impact Gold for getting her prepared to hit against college pitchers. I give my select team coach a lot of props because he got me ready, Walker said. We used to do the same thing over and over and it got me better. I ve been doing the repetition of hitting for a long time. Besides reaching the World Series, Walker s biggest goal at Baylor is to become an All-American. She sees the names of former Baylor players like Whitney Canion, Brette Reagan and Monceaux on the center-field wall at Getterman Stadium and wants to join them. I want my name on the wall, Walker said. That s what I m striving for now. Kayce Walker finished her Baylor career in 2012 with a.343 batting average. If Kyla continues at the current pace, she ll break the school career hitting mark of.380 by Monceaux in Kayce doesn t mind taking a back seat to her younger sister. I always said my sister is better than me, Kayce said. She s faster, quicker and everything came so much easier for her. Pitchers usually figure out your weaknesses, but Kyla doesn t have many. I always joked with Kyla about having a sophomore slump, but she s not having one at all.

TRIB ALL-BIG 12 SOFTBALL TEAM: Baylor's Cargill wins player of the year Waco Tribune-Herald By: John Werner May 13, 2017 From the moment she stepped on the Baylor campus, Lindsey Cargill showed she could handle any kind of pitching and play nearly any position on the field. She s raised the bar higher than anyone could have expected as a senior this year. Cargill got off to a hot start and never slowed down. Through the regular season, the senior third baseman led the Big 12 with a.459 batting average and 32 stolen bases, and has been the most consistent force in a powerful Baylor offensive attack. Cargill is the Tribune-Herald Big 12 softball player of the year, beating out other strong candidates like Oklahoma s Shay Knighten and Nicole Mendes. Oklahoma won the other three major awards as Paige Parker is pitcher of the year, Mendes newcomer of the year and Patty Gasso coach of the year after leading the Sooners to a 17-1 record and winning the Big 12 by four games over Baylor. Lindsey not only has been consistent, she just seems to raise her level of play every time we need her to, said Baylor coach Glenn Moore. She s played hard throughout her whole career and at a high level, but this year has been outstanding. It s justifying the awards she s going to receive. Cargill has raised her batting average every season at Baylor, going from.285 as a freshman to.355 as a sophomore to.360 as a junior. But the former Robinson High School star has outdone herself this season, ranking fifth nationally with her.459 batting average. During Big 12 regular season games, Cargill hit a league-high.482 with 12 stolen bases in 18 games. This year she s done what s natural for her and that s the power slap, Moore said. That along with laying down the bunt and being a triple threat type of offensive player, she has really put the defense on their heels. She s just been phenomenal. Cargill also played third base for the first time this season after playing a myriad of other positions throughout her Baylor career including all outfield spots, catcher, shortstop and second base. The only positions she hasn t played at Baylor are first base and pitcher. She s a kid made for the action, and she s had to sit out there (in the outfield) way away from people for three years, Moore said. Asking her to come in and play third base is a difficult position to play. Typically you have to work kids over and over to get them to take the bunt away in the face of the batters because it is a little bit dangerous. But I had to back her down a little bit. She just loves to be in the action. Since coming into the Big 12 in 2015, Parker has been the best pitcher in the league as she went 28-7 with a 1.65 ERA as a freshman and 38-3 with a 1.64 ERA last year for Oklahoma s national championship team. This year she hasn t had to carry as much of the load as junior Paige Lowary has gone 13-2 and freshman Mariah Lopez But Parker is still the ace of a great staff and the pitcher the Sooners count on to win the biggest games. Parker has gone 18-5 with a 1.47 ERA while collecting 191 strikeouts in 147⅔ innings. During Big 12 regular season play, Parker went 8-0 with an 0.86 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 49 innings. It s a tale of two different years, Gasso said. Last year she was struggling with the work load she had. What I like this year is she s fresh and ready and has pitched well in the middle and late in the season. Our pitching depth has given her more of a breath this season. Gasso brings in a tremendous set of freshmen every year, and Mendes has been the best throughout this season. The outfielder leads the Sooners with a.432 batting average with three homers and 18 RBIs and is also a threat on the base baths with 18 stolen bases. During Big 12 play, she hit.444 and consistently sparked the Sooners offense. Nicole has been our leadoff hitter and came in real nervous like a lot of freshmen do, Gasso said. She decided that doesn t help and it s not really a way to showcase herself. So she did a really good job of saying she s not going to live in that stressful world and started playing. Her world changed and she changed. Gasso likes the versatility Mendes brings to the plate. The nice thing about Nicole is she can be versatile, and hit for power, bunt and slap, Gasso said. She s got a lot of weapons. You don t know what to expect from freshmen because they take things and let the game get too big. But we ve been pleasantly surprised with Nicole. We know how athletic she is, and we ve very much needed her athleticism to find its way into the lineup.

A CUT ABOVE: For Baylor softball, Jessie Scroggins' dynamic defense a cut above Waco Tribune-Herald By: John Werner May 18, 2017 Baylor has marched out a procession of superb centerfielders from Kelly Levesque to Harmony Schwethelm to Kathy Shelton. But the Lady Bears never had a centerfielder who can cover as much ground, routinely make jaw dropping catches, and gun down baserunners with as much flair as Jessie Scroggins. Scroggins became the first outfielder in Big 12 softball history to be named the league s defensive player of the year. It s an award that usually goes to catchers and shortstops, but Scroggins has played at such a high level that she was impossible to ignore. I would never compare the centerfielders we ve had because we ve had some great ones, said Baylor coach Glenn Moore. But I wouldn t put any ahead of her the way she s playing. She s our first Big 12 defensive player of the year, and for an outfielder to get that recognition says enough right there. Scroggins defensive skills will be on display when the Lady Bears host an NCAA regional Friday through Sunday at Getterman Stadium. Earning the No. 15 national seed, Baylor will play Kent State in the first round at 6:30 p.m. Friday. While Scroggins is one of the Lady Bears best hitters with a.370 average, her defensive abilities make her invaluable. Baylor s pitchers look at the talented junior as a security blanket because she can track down balls that most outfielders wouldn t have a prayer to haul in. It s very comforting knowing she can run down any ball that gets in the outfield, said Baylor pitcher Gia Rodoni. She can take it from right field to left field. She s all over the place and gets the best jumps on the ball. Her arm s incredible. She always comes through. The Texas Longhorns learned to respect her arm when she gunned down Kelli Hanzel trying to score from second base on a single for the final out in the seventh to seal Baylor s 2-1 dramatic win May 5 at Getterman Stadium. While Scroggins enjoys chasing down long fly balls, there s nothing quite like nailing a runner on the basepaths. It s one of the best feelings, Scroggins said. Coaches like to test the outfield. Being able to throw runners out lets the other team know: Don t run on me because you re going to get out. Growing up in a family with two athletic brothers, it wasn t hard for Scroggins to develop her competitive edge. Older brother Jesse Scroggins Jr. was a high school All-American quarterback as a senior at Lakewood (Calif.) High School in 2009 before signing with USC. He was definitely a role model, I wanted to be just like him, Jessie Scroggins said. He went to Lakewood and I wanted to follow in his footsteps. Jessie has a twin brother, Jerin Scroggins, who plays receiver for the University of Buffalo. Growing up in Southern California, they played on the same Little League baseball teams and flag football squads. She let him know she was older by five or 10 minutes, said her father, Jesse Scroggins. She was always competitive and she was rough. She threw him around and he threw her around, but they always had a great relationship. Since both Jesse and his wife, Jeri, were in the Army, discipline was expected in their household. Jesse did everything he could to help his children achieve their athletic goals. He built a batting cage on their property and had them walk on their hands to strengthen their arms. When she decided to focus on softball during junior high, they worked on every phase of her offensive game to improve her hitting skills. We went 100 percent, and I built the batting cage when she was 11 or 12, Jesse said. We developed her bunting game by drawing two circles one on the third base side and the other on the second base side and she had to put the bunt there. Then we developed her slap game because as she got older third basemen would come up close. Then we started working on her power. The relentless work paid off as Scroggins hit.458 during her four years at Lakewood High School. She also raised her skills by playing in the summers for the Corona Angels travel ball team that included Oklahoma Sooners Big 12 player of the year Shay Knighten. Our main tournaments were in California, but we d travel to Colorado and Georgia, Jessie said. My softball IQ definitely went up. Jessie and twin brother Jerin were always close and still talk to each other on a regular basis. She even supported him when he decided to transfer from Lakewood to rival Cabrillo High School for his senior year. His friends were kind of upset at him about that, Jessie said. It was weird, don t get me wrong. But I wore some Cabrillo gear a sweater and sweats. And they beat Lakewood in football. Recruited heavily by softball programs across the country, Jessie chose Baylor even though it was far from her Southern California home. Coach Moore watched her for at least a year, Jesse Scroggins said. He was one of the last coaches to offer her but she felt so good about it. She s my only daughter, and I just trusted him. Scroggins quickly became Baylor s starting centerfielder as a freshman. Though she played exceptional defense from the start, she sometimes struggled at the plate and hit.261 in But she raised her batting average nearly 100 points as a sophomore and hit.356 with six homers, 30 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. She s raised her average to.370 this season with three homers, 20 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. This year, I ve bunted more, Scroggins said. It s more of a confidence thing. If you get your bunts down, it helps the team and they get excited. But I like to mix it up and keep the defense guessing, so I also like to swing away. The combination of dynamic offensive skills and superb defense has made Scroggins a fixture in Baylor s lineup. But it s those memorable catches that stand out the most. She knows she s been given some God given talent and abilities, and she s able to freely use them, Moore said. She loves to make the big, spectacular catch and she reads the ball off the bat very well. She can climb the wall or she can gun a runner out at the plate.

Hawkins Part of Greatest Comeback Ever in WCWS Baylor Bear Foundation By: Jerry Hill May 19, 2017 Three years later, it s still as fresh in her mind as if it just happened yesterday. Baylor senior second baseman Ari Hawkins was front and center during the middle of the greatest comeback in the history of the Women s College World Series. A freshman on Baylor s 2014 World Series team, Hawkins talked about how the seniors gathered the team together before the bottom of the sixth inning with the Lady Bears trailing Kentucky, 7-0, in an elimination game and said, This is not going to be our last game. That put the scare in me, she said. I just took that to heart, and I was not going to go out losing. Hawkins got the unfathomable comeback started with a leadoff bunt single in a three-run sixth, led off the four-run seventh with a no-doubt homer to left and then brought home Kaitlyn Thumann with the winning run in the eighth when she laid down a sacrifice bunt and the catcher threw it away as Baylor pulled off the 8-7 miracle. Still to this day, I don t know how we did it, Hawkins said. But, I believed. I believed so hard.... I was on deck, pacing back and forth, like we were going to win it, we re going to get this in, one hit at a time, praying for people. It was just crazy. Hawkins would love nothing better than to finish her career the way it started and take 15th-seeded Baylor (43-12) back to the World Series in Oklahoma City. The Lady Bears are the top seeds in the Waco Regional and will face fourth-seeded Kent State (32-26) at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Getterman Stadium. After getting shipped off to Lafayette, La., and Eugene, Ore., the last two seasons, Baylor is hosting a regional for the second time in Hawkins four-year career and the fourth time overall. It s overwhelmingly exciting, coach Glenn Moore said. To be able to stay at home, sleep in our beds, all those good things are ours now. And we get to play in what we still believe is the best stadium in the country. To bring other teams here to see what we have, to show it off and to be able to play in front of our fans in Central Texas is a big deal. Part of that crowd will be Hawkins mother and father, who moved to Midlothian, Texas, the summer before her freshman year. That was the main reason why Ari even ended up in Waco. A three-time Valley Oak League MVP at Kimball High School in Tracy, Calif., where she hit.607,.593 and.576 her last three seasons, Hawkins had given the University of Virginia a verbal commitment when she was a sophomore and even signed a national letter of intent. But, when her family moved from California to Texas, we found a loophole, I got out of it, and I was able to be open on the market for three weeks before school started. The market wasn t open for long, though. Hawkins made a quick oneday visit to Waco and signed with the Lady Bears, joining a freshman class that included first-team all-region and All-Big 12 third baseman Lindsey Cargill. The Christian atmosphere really caught my attention. That s really a big thing with my family, she said. And just the overall attention, I guess you would say, as far as softball. They ve been a top team for however many years. It was just something that me and my family thought was right for me. With Jordan Strickland entrenched at shortstop, Hawkins made a sometimes-shaky transition to second base, making a career-high 12 errors. They always say it s interchangeable between short and second, she said. But honestly, to me, it felt like a completely different world. The ball comes off the bat differently, you react to lefties differently. I had to figure out if I could stick with (throwing overhand) or learn how to throw sidearm. It was a problem at the beginning. It was just an adjustment period, it took a while, probably the whole season. It didn t affect her at the plate, though. Hawkins had the World Series team s second-best batting average at.365 and improved to a teamleading.396 the next year, when she was named first-team All-Big 12 and second-team all-region. Last year was the anomaly in what has otherwise been a phenomenal hitting career she ranks eighth all-time with a career.334 batting average. Coming off two offseason surgeries and dealing with injuries all year, she hit just.242 as a junior with a career-high five homers and 23 RBI. If I had to point to one thing, I d probably say it was the injuries with her, Moore said. Her body is about 10 years older than her age. That s affected her when her back s not feeling well, and I know last year that was the case quite often. It affects your swing, and you back off of reps in the cage and in practice a little bit. And then it kind of snowballs. And you re not having the confidence she needs to be the good hitter she is this year. While Hawkins says her senior season has not been the prettiest, she s still hitting.310 with nine, doubles, four homers and a careerhigh 28 RBI to nab second-team All-Big 12 and third-team all-region honors. Ari is such a great athlete, Cargill said. She can do everything. She can bunt, she can hit, she can field ground balls. Everyone looks up to her as a leader. She s going to be in that leadership role this weekend. She ll be able to get the ball in play and lead this team to a victory. One of three players who graduated last weekend, Hawkins plans to stick around for at least another semester to return the favor and cheer on her boyfriend, Ishmail Wainright, who s become a regular at Getterman Stadium. Wainright finished a four-year basketball career and is transitioning to playing tight end next fall for the Baylor football team. I ve always loved basketball and football. Just coming to Texas, it s a lot bigger deal here, Hawkins said. I ve always been a fan. I guess I m an even bigger fan now. Second-seeded James Madison (50-6) faces third-seeded Oregon State (28-25) in the other first-round game at 4 p.m. Friday. Games in the double-elimination tournament are scheduled for 1, 3:30 and 6 p.m. Saturday, with the first championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday and the if-necessary game to follow at 3:30. All-session reserved tickets are $35, with single-day, general admission tickets available for $10 for adults, $7 for youth ages 18 and younger and free for Baylor students with an ID. The Waco Regional is paired with second-seeded Arizona for a potential Super Regional matchup in Tucson.

Rodoni's no-hitter fuels Baylor to 1-0 win over Kent State in NCAA opener Waco Tribune-Herald By: John Werner May 19, 2017 It was a bit of a gamble for Baylor coach Glenn Moore to start Gia Rodoni instead of ace Kelsee Selman in Friday night s NCAA tournament opener. After Rodoni threw a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Kent State, Moore s move looked brilliant. Rodoni (16-2) threw the first no-hitter in Baylor NCAA tournament history and the 22nd in program history. It was Baylor s first no-hitter since Heather Stearns pulled off the feat against Kansas in Gia s a great pitcher and this is evidence right here, Moore said. She needs to frame this because no-hitters in our game are getting fewer each year because the hitters are so good. And they have some scary hitters in their lineup, too. Baylor s win sets up a second-round winners bracket matchup at 1 p.m. Saturday against James Madison (51-6) at Getterman Stadium. A rested Selman (22-8) will pitch against James Madison ace Megan Good (37-1) who threw a six-hitter in a 3-2 win over Oregon State on Friday. Rodoni walked four batters and struck out three, and had to be on her game to outduel Kent State s Ronnie Ladines (19-15) who threw a five-hitter. Baylor improved to overall while Kent State is I found out earlier in the week I was starting, Rodoni said. So throughout the week I was preparing mentally to get out and get the first win. Everything for the most part was working well. I had a few misses in the last inning but for the most part my curve, screw and changeup were the ones I stuck with. Rodoni retired the Golden Flashes first 15 hitters before Vanessa Vodan drew a walk to open the sixth. The sophomore right-hander walked Hunter Brancifort to open the seventh and then walked Bailey Brownfield and Ladines to load the bases with two outs. Rodoni could finally breathe a sigh of relief when leftfielder Kyla Walker caught Brooke Dodson s fly ball near the fence in foul territory for the final out. Gia was flawless, Moore said. When she missed, she barely missed. She was on her game, she was locked in the entire time, and that s what it took to win that game. I couldn t be more proud of her to start it off this way. Walker scored the game s only run in the fifth inning after she tripled with two outs to the right-field power alley. Centerfielder Maria Cegledy picked up Walker s hit and threw it to second baseman Vanessa Scoarste, but her throw sailed into the dugout to allow Walker to score from third. She left an inside pitch a little up, thank goodness, Walker said. I saw they were still running for it when I was on second and I thought I d go. I was celebrating (at third base) and then I saw the ball roll on past me into the dugout, so I went on in. Baylor had a shot to score in the second inning. Maddison Kettler reached on a fielder s choice, moved to second on a passed ball and tried to score on Taylor Ellis infield single. But shortstop Holly Speers threw out Kettler at home to end the inning. Lindsey Cargill reached third base in the first inning and Jessie Scroggins reached third in the fourth but Ladines came through with clutch pitches to end the threats. Moore wasn t surprised Walker came through with the game winning run. Usually you say you want a big, strong hitter in the box when the game s on the line, Moore said. Kyla s probably my pick because she s a tough out, she adjusts as well as anybody and she s quick, she puts pressure on people. And then when they read her stat line, they re a little bit scared of her. She s pretty special, she can play the game.

Gia Rodoni throws her second straight no-hitter to send Baylor into super regionals espnw.com By: Graham Hays May 21, 2017 Gia Rodoni entered the NCAA tournament with the resume of the No. 2 pitcher on Baylor's staff. She finished the regional in the company of some of the best pitchers in NCAA softball history. Gia Rodoni celebrates after her no-hitter against James Madison sent Baylor into the super regionals. Rodoni threw a no-hitter in No. 15 Baylor's 1-0 win over James Madison in the Waco regional final on Sunday, securing a place in next week's super regional round. It was the sophomore's second nohitter of her career but also her second of the weekend after she nohit Kent State in the regional opener on Friday. It marks the first time since 2010, when North Carolina's Danielle Spaulding no-hit Nebraska twice in the Seattle regional, that a pitcher threw two no-hitters in the same regional. And it is just the eighth time it has happened since the start of the NCAA tournament in Among those to accomplish it previously were Monica Abbott, Lisa Fernandez and Cat Osterman. Rodoni's no-hitters are two of seven during the first weekend of the NCAA tournament, but two of only four that required the pitcher to complete all seven innings (the other no-hitters came in games shortened to five innings because one team led by eight or more runs). Sunday's effort, in which she faced just two batters over the minimum, was all the more impressive because James Madison entered the tournament with the nation's best team batting average. That Rodoni is the newest member of the double no-hitter club is somewhat surprising. She split starts almost equally this season with teammate Kelsee Selman, compiling a similar ERA, but it was Selman who pitched a heavy majority of innings in Big 12 games in the second half of the season. Baylor moves on to face the winner of the Eugene regional, with No. 3 Oregon one win away from clinching that title and hosting the bestof-three super regional.

Rodoni coming through in the clutch for Baylor softball Waco Tribune-Herald By: John Werner May 25, 2017 After crafting two masterpieces at Getterman Stadium, Gia Rodoni s cell phone blew up all weekend. The first explosion of texts and calls came after she threw her first nohitter against Kent State in the Baylor softball team s NCAA tournament opener last Friday. The next wave came two days later when the sophomore righthander used her devastating changeup to seal her second no-hitter as the Lady Bears clinched the regional title with a 1-0 win over James Madison. In the stands, her parents and older brother, Tazz, were thrilled to witness Rodoni become the first pitcher to throw multiple no-hitters in the NCAA tournament since North Carolina s Danielle Spaulding in My father and I were most concerned with Gia getting the W, said Tazz, a Baylor senior pre-med major. We were pensively watching, keeping an eye on her. We had faith in her. You don t see that every often. Rodoni became the first Baylor pitcher in school history to throw nohitters in back to back starts. She also made it clear that the No. 15 national seed Lady Bears have two aces heading into the Super Regional against No. 2 Arizona beginning Friday in Tucson. Though Baylor coach Glenn Moore plans to start senior Kelsee Selman in the opener, Rodoni will certainly play a major role as the best-of-three series unfolds. Gia was phenomenal over the weekend, said Baylor pitching coach Britni Sneed Newman. One thing I told her was this is what you prepare for, this is why you do what you do early in the season. This is why you face tough competition. She was ready and she performed. Rodoni has pitched well all season as she s built a 17-2 record with a 1.57 ERA and 134 strikeouts in 138 innings in 30 games. But she s been at her best down the stretch, culminating in her remarkable weekend at the Waco regional. Though Rodoni hasn t spent a lot of time dwelling on the two nohitters, she understands her feat will be remembered as long as Baylor plays softball. It s something that s never happened to me, so I think it s pretty cool, Rodoni said. I really can t tell you why it came together. I was so confident in my defense. That was what kept me going the whole weekend. I didn t have to be perfect every pitch. I knew they were going to be there to make the plays, so it was relaxing knowing that. The Baylor coaching staff is impressed that Rodoni has pitched at such a high level this year after making her debut more than a month into her freshman year. Moore had planned to redshirt her in 2016, but saw that the pitching staff needed more depth behind ace Heather Stearns. Rodoni made her debut on March 20, 2016 against Central Florida as she posted a pair of strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings to pick up a save. She finished last season with a 6-1 record and a 3.35 ERA in 37 2/3 innings. We weren t performing with the No. 2 (pitcher) to the level we needed to advance, and that was our best chance, Moore said. It s a tough decision because you re trading a year for a third of the year. But she threw well once she got the rust knocked off. Once the Lady Bears are into the season, Moore lets the player decide whether to pull the redshirt. But Rodoni wanted to help the team any way she could. She picked up a win in last year s regional in Eugene, as she allowed three hits and no earned runs in five innings in an 11-2 win over Long Beach State that sent the Lady Bears to the championship game where they lost to Oregon. It was crazy when coach told me I was going to start the next game (against Long Beach State) because I hadn t expected it at the start of the regional, Rodoni said. It helped me coming into this year s regional having played in last year s regional. It gave me confidence these are the best teams in the country, and it s a good opportunity to see what I can do. Growing up in an athletic family in Central California, Rodoni has always been very competitive. Her father, Brian Rodoni, played center for the BYU football team from Her mother, Michelle, was a diver at Long Beach State. Her older brother, Tazz, played high school baseball, and her younger brother, Thor, is a walk-on long snapper for the Baylor football team. We re all high intensity individuals, Tazz said. My father always said Gia was blessed with talent, and that s been evident since she was a young girl. We re a close family and we talk to each quite a bit. I don t think it s uncommon that all three of us are at Baylor because we ve always gone to the same schools, and it s like another step to go here. Gia was the first member of the Rodoni family to decide to make the leap from California to Baylor when she verbally committed to the softball program in Tazz received academic scholarships and became the first member of the family to enroll at Baylor in 2014, followed by Gia in 2015 and Thor in Both Tazz and Thor attend Gia s softball games whenever they can. My older brother comes all the time when he has free time and my younger brother comes when he doesn t have football practice, Gia said. It s so nice. My first year not knowing people, it was nice having my older brother to guide me and hang out with me when I was bored. My younger brother and I have mutual friends with other athletes. Rodoni could have easily stayed on the West coast to play college softball after she was recruited by Washington, Fresno State and Long Beach State. But she felt Baylor was where she belonged from the first time she visited campus. It s just Baylor s beauty and Christian atmosphere, and the coaches are awesome as well, Rodoni said. It felt right when I came here. As soon as I stepped on campus I knew this is where I want to go. Rodoni starred at Pancheco High School in Los Banos, Calif., and enchanced her skills by playing teams from all over the country with the California Grapettes club. I ve known her since travel ball, she was younger than me, said Baylor senior second baseman Ari Hawkins. She was fierce on the mound and she had that composure of not letting anything get to her. That has stuck with her the whole time. Her competitiveness and drive and tendency to get things done is great. With Selman wrapping up her final season, Rodoni is set to become Baylor s No. 1 pitcher next season. She would love to cap her sophomore season by winning the Super Regional and helping Baylor reach the Women s College World Series for the first time since We know it s so close, Rodoni said. It only takes two wins and we re there. We had a great weekend and we want to keep feeding off what we did and keep improving from here. We know Arizona is a phenomenal team, so we have to keep being on our game.
