P eter P o rt, Guernsey. 10th A pril In June 1943 while I was working аз ал operator at Guernsey s Regal (now Odeon) Cinema, I was pounced on Ъу the Germans and questioned by two of them about pieces of copper and s ilv e r which they found strewn about the workshop. Obviously they knew what they were looking fo r, sind must h av e been given inform ation about my a c t i v i t i e s. I had fo r some time, follow ing the launching of B r it a in 's V-slgn campaign, been making V buttonhole badges from coins which some people wore openly and others h id behind the lapels of th e ir coats. I trie d to b lu ff my way out of answering th e ir pointed questions, but i t was of no av ail and eventually, because I sensed they knew fa r more th a n I was w illin g to t e l l them, I did give them the tru th. They had told me, too, th a t unless I told them the tru th, they would have to beat I t out of me. When they asked me If I had a ra d io -s e t, I answered N o', but a f te r searching my tool-box they found a paper headed "News", with the B.B.C. news in shorthand. I told them I knew nothing of th is, but a f te r much pushing around and rough treatm ent, I adm itted, as cover, th at I had had radios in the workshop in the p ast as from time to time German o ffic e rs had given me th e irs to re p a ir. I was then a rre ste d, locked in a c e ll at the lo cal p riso n, and made to do s o lit a r y ' fo r 3 weeks and 2 days. Then came my so-called t r i a l. This was conducted In German, which I did not know, but the German Court continued despite my p ro te s ts. At the end of i t I was sentenced to one month s imprisonment, and told I could appeal if I wished. I was advised by the Chief Warder on the c i v il side p f the prison not to appeal--as th is would only gain me an extended sentence. Taken back to my c e ll I was subjected to fu rth e r rough treatm ent and asked to sign a se rie s of p a p e rs--- p o ssib ly the German-language version of my t r i a l but I refused to sig n anything unless i t were w ritten ln Engllshe I was released a f t e r a month in p riso n. L ater I learned th a t had I appealed ag ain st my sentence I would have been confined to priso n fo r 3 m onths---for th at was the time taken by an appeal. About 6 weeks a f te r my release I had an order from the Feldkommandantur saying th a t I would be deported to Germany on 1st October On the evening of 30th September 1943 I organised a farew ell party which ended w ith everyone loudly singing B r itis h songs and the N ational Anthem. This was in terru p ted by Nazi so ld iers who a rre ste d me again and I was confined to p riso n. At 6.30 p.m. the next day two other Guernseymen and I were taken to a German doctor who examined our bodies and asked us if we f e l t w ell. (I did not le a rn u n til a f te r the war th a t some c iv ilia n had interceded on behalf of myself and la id the seed in an e f f o r t to make the Nazis believe I was a l i t t l e mad thinking I might thus be held in Guernsey sind not sen t to Germany.) We were then taken to S t. P'eter Port Harbour, put into the hold of a German ship, the hatch of which was battened down over us. We l e f t Guernsey during that n ig h t and the follow ing day were landed a t S t. Malo. Five days la te r we arriwed at Laufen OBB in Germany. 14 Roy Machon ---- FORBIDDEN POLITICAL MEETING and singing FORBIDDEN SONGS. For th is orfence I was sentenced to 5 months' Imprisonment with hard labour. I asked the Laufen Camp Senior Mr. Ambrose J. Sherw ill (now S ir АтЬгозе Sherw ill) fo r h is advice in my predicament and he to ld me not to appeal as I could have my sentence doubled. I did, la te r however, go through the motions of appealing against sentence, but this brought no re s u lt fo r i t was conducted e n tire ly in German. The 'appeal* was in Munich in December I was taken back to Laufen, u n til February 1944 when I was tra n sfe rre d to Stadelhelm P riso n, Munich, along w ith 3,000 other p riso n e rs. Here I was strip p ed of my c iv ilia n clothing and given a p air of patched tro u sers and an old coat bearing a red or orange diamond of coloured m a te ria l which was sewn onto the back of the ja ck et. Without option I was put to work w ith a mixed n a tio n a lity number of p rls o n e rs --I was the only one who spoke E nglish sp lic in g s te e l cable from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m, every day w ith one break fo r 's o u p '. The oable was being used fo r M esserschmltt f ig h te r p lan es. When I discovered th is I pointed out to the head of the P rison th a t under every known Treaty or Convention i t was ille g a l to employ anyone in th is cap acity. If anyo of we priso n ers did not move quickly enough in the execution of th is work we were punished by the guards who h i t us about the head and nesk w ith some heavy m etal object or prison keys which they carried in a bunch. So many h i t tings about the head did I s u ffe r that I sustained a permanent injury which re su lte d in defeaness. Today I have to wear a deal! aid which cost me ju s t over 50. Doctors have said there is no cure fo r this deafness and a ttrib u te i t to the beatings fo r, when I entered p riso n I had p e rfe c t hearing and was a normally healthy being. One of the men mainly responsible for the injury ± suffered was called Mae H e r. un Mondays and Thursdays in the p riso n guards would c a ll out 10 to 20 names and these priso n ers would be marched out to do work outside the p riso n. Many times of th a t number, only 5 would re tu rn. The rest were either sent for further sentences, years, or ju st k ille d where they stood. One such, a P ole, had h is head cut off fo r s te a lin g 10 Reichmarks from a German. Mondays and Thursdays, too, were t r i a l days. Tuesdays and Fridays were the days of k illin g s. On Wednesdays and Fridays we were given a small piece of blood sausage or a small piece of meat.in our soup. I t was commonly known and spoken about by p riso n e rs, that we were eating the fle sh and blood of fellow -prisoners who had been k ille d by the N azis. During my imprisonment I was in 's o l i t a r y ' fo r the whole 5 months, except fo r the l a s t two weeks. When my time had been served I was co lle c te d from the p riso n by the German Censor of Ila g V ll and taken back to Laufen and put s tra ig h t into the h o s p ita l fo r several weeks We were eventually released by the Americans on May 4, I have no com plaint about my treatm ent a t Laufen for we were allowed Red Cross parcels and l e t t e r s.
