4 REPORT ON OVERBURDEN DRILLING General Statement Durng the summer of 1982, Bradley Bros* Lmted, was contracted to carry out Reverse Crculaton Overburden Drllng. Durng the contract perod of July 16th to July 31st, 1982, and specfcally on July 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 Se 23, they drlled the 3 holes, numbered H-81-96, 97, and 98 heren reported n Tully Townshp. The equpment conssts of a Longyear 38 drll mounted on a Flextrac FN1 wth a three hundred gallon water storage tank and a 125 cubc foot/mnute compressor. The water or a mxture of water and ar s pumped down the outer tube of the drll rods and returns up the nner tube wth the sample. The samples are collected n fve gallon pals. The sample nterval s determned by the supervsor loggng the stratgraphy. Depth Measurng Procedure The hole s started by pecng together a 30 foot length of drll rod, whch when n place has the tr-cone bt restng on the ground surface and the top, where the swvel s attached, s at the top of the tower. When ths frst length of rods s drlled nto the ground to t's full extent, 10 feet of rod s stll above ground and 20 feet of rod s measured n the ground. Ths procedure s contnued untl 5 feet of bedrock has been drlled. As the rods pass

5 through the dfferent stratgraphc horzons the footage s noted. The footage s easly noted by countng the number of 20 foot sectons added and by notng the poston of the rods on the tower whch has footage markers every two feet. Sample Collectng Procedure A fve gallon pal s placed under the return hose wth a 4-mesh screen on top. The return s constantly examned to determne the type of materal, organc, clay, varved clay, slty clay, sand, gravel, basal-tll, boulder, or bedrock. As each horzon s reached the sample bucket s changed and dependng on the type of sample t s ether dscarded or placed n a heavy plastc bag for treatment n the laboratory. Sample nterval s decded by the supervsor on the drll and s usually at 5 to 10 foot ntervals when n the same materal or at odd ntervals when there s a stratgraphc change.
