R esearch Center of Ch ina N ationa l offshore O il Corp, B eijing , China) Abstract: Quite a lot of oil fields have been exp lored in the sedimentary basins over the shallow sea in the northern south China sea; moreover, considerable p roduction capability has been set up since the earliest oil seep2 age survey and shallow sea drilling in the 1960 s. However, to exp lore new oilfields and sustain a stable develop2 ment is a major challenge the petroleum developer confronted in this region. Prelim inary analysis show s, the deep 2 water slope of the northern South China Sea has bright p rospecting future as many other deep water sedimentary ba2 sins over the world. Recent gas discovery by the exp loration drilling hole LW further supports the fact that the deep slope is an ideal petroleum comp lementaty area, and a tactic target area.
