1 CHEMICAL TRIAL ANALYSIS Summary report May 2013
2 11 Priority Hazardous Chemicals Introduction AIM The aim of this study is to verify the presence of hazardous chemicals (11 priority chemicals) when best available chemistries by specific brands are used in the factories. HYPOTHESIS The hypothesis is that if we switch all chemicals with chemicals coming from suppliers who claim that the chemicals are free of the 11 priority hazardous chemicals (not intentionally used), then the presence of hazardous chemicals should be low to no presence at all when tested across the processing line; during and after processes. 8 Summary of Findings In general, most chemicals were not detected in studies, except (i) Azo dyes, (ii) Heavy metals and (iii) SCCPs. Lead (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd) were detected in Factory A&B. The possible sources of heavy metals : Caustic Soda and Salts that used in processing. Chemical Alkylphenols (APs) & Alkylphenol Ethoxylates (APEOs), Azo Dyes, Brominated and Chlorinated Flame Retardants, Chlorinated solvents, Chlorobenzenes, Organotin, Phthalates, Short Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (SCCPs), Total heavy metal, Perfluorinated Chemicals (PFCs) Result Detected Detected Detected Areas for improvement: 1. Communicate with Chemical industry to find a breakthrough on technical, such as Chloroaniline in dyes 2. Improve Chemical Management System in mills (i) Encourage suppliers to use reputed chemical suppliers with qualified MSDS information (ii) Provide an education to suppliers on Chemical Management System
