Lnear optcs mplementaton of general two-photon proectve measurement Andrze Grudka* and Anton Wóck** Faculty of Physcs, Adam Mckewcz Unversty, arxv:quant-ph/ 9 Jul PXOWRZVNDR]QDRODQG Abstract We wll present a method of mplementaton of general proectve measurement of two-photon polarzaton state wth the use of lnear optcs elements only. The scheme presented succeeds wth a probablty of at least / 6. For some specfc measurements, (e.g. party measurement) ths probablty reaches /. PACS number(s):.6.-a Recently, Hofmann and Tekeuch [] have presented a method of constructng the operator (the so called party flter) proectng the nput state of two photons on a twodmensonal subspace of dentcal horzontal and vertcal polarzatons. They have acheved the goal wth the use of lnear optcs only. The necessary two-photon nteractons have been smulated by detecton and post selecton process. The restrcton to the lnear optcs s reflected n the probablty of success of Hoffman and Takeuch procedure whch s equal to
/6. It s the am of ths paper to present a scheme whch would allow to perform any proectve two-photon polarzaton measurement wth the same probablty. Moreover n the specfc case of the party flter the scheme presented reaches the probablty of success equal to /. The scheme s based on quantum teleportaton n a way smlar to the lnear optcs mplementaton of untary quantum gates [-]. All these schemes use auxlary photons. Ths photon redundancy allows performance of two-photon operatons by approprately chosen measurements. The result of the measurement outcome tells us whch untary operaton has been performed. In general the scheme presented conssts of the followng steps. Frst, one has to prepare a specfc state of sx auxlary photons accordng to whch knd of measurement s to be performed. It s worth notng, that any such state can be obtaned non determnstcally by the method of tral and error wthout nonlnear photon-photon nteractons. Secondly, one performs two Bell measurements and two sngle-photon measurements. Any operator whch proects a state n a four-dmensonal Hlbert space on some ts subspace can be constructed as a sum of operators proectng ths state on one-dmensonal orthogonal subspaces. So, let us suppose that we have four orthonormal two-photon polarzaton states α.e. α δ α =. Then four operators that proect on these states are P α α =. The general form of the operator Pˆ whch proects on subspace spanned by α s any subset of {, =,,, } ˆ = π P, where = P π f α belongs to the subset defnng Pˆ and = π n the other case. In ths way one can construct a famly of proectors Pˆ whch satsfy the condton P ˆ = I provded that π =. One can arrange proectve measurement n whch the ntal state β s transformed to P ˆ β = π α β α (up to
normalzaton factor) wth the probablty β Pˆ β. Let us now descrbe the frst step of our scheme whch we call the preparaton step. Its am s to prepare a specfc auxlary state of sx photons (whch wll be labeled by ndces,...,) for a gven famly of proectors Pˆ. Any orthonormal base for two-photon polarzaton space whch defnes proectors P α α = s of the form α = α H H α H V α V H α V V, () where =,,, and H, V stand for horzontal and vertcal polarzaton, respectvely. We wll also ntroduce another orthonormal base ( α ) V V ( α) V H ( α ) H V ( ) H H * α = α () 56 and the followng two-photon states = H H = H V = V H () = V V. The state whch s needed to perform proectve measurement s * Ξ = π α α 56. () As recently shown by several groups [-6], t s possble to perform probablstc CNOT polarzaton gate wth the use of lnear optcs. It s well known [] that CNOT gate together wth one-photon gates (whch can be easly performed) are unversal. Thus, one can construct the requred state by the method of tral and error. The pont s that the preparaton step does not nvolve the state whch s to be measured. One frst prepares the auxlary state Ξ, and then uses t. The probablty of preparaton of the state Ξ n one tral does not affect the
probablty of our scheme. We are now ready to perform the proectve measurement on an arbtrary two-photon polarzaton state β = β H H β H V β V H β V V. (5) To see how our scheme works we wll wrte the total state of photons to be measured and auxlary photons as β Ξ = the other terms, (6) where ( H V ± V H ) ± = ν ν ν are Bell states, s the followng four-photon normalzed state () () π α β α = and the other terms contan only states orthogonal to 5 6. It s well known [9] that wth the use of lnear optcs t s possble to dentfy two of four Bell states, namely and. If one performs Bell measurements on photon pars (,5) and (,6) and the measurements results gve for both pars then the state of the remanng photons s proected on. As can be seen from Eq. (6) ths happens wth the probablty / 6. The state can be wrtten n the form = ( Pˆ β ), (9) whch clearly ndcates that the measurement performed on photons and n { H, V } bass proects photons and on the state Pˆ β provded that photons and are found n the state. The probablty of proecton on a gven subspace s equal to β Pˆ β n
accordance wth the standard formula. Thus, the am of our scheme s acheved. The scheme can be straghtforward generalzed to n -photon state, however the probablty of success scales as n. Let us now consder a specfc case of measurement where the famly of proectors conssts of two elements only (the so called party operators) gven by the followng formulae ˆ P = H H H H V V V V P ˆ = H V V H V H H V. () In ths case α = H H, α = V V, α = H V, α = V H, π = π = π = π, π = π = π = π, and =, so the states can be encoded n = = one-photon polarzaton states = = H, = = V. The sx-photon auxlary state Ξ s now replaced by the fve-photon one, namely Ξ = 56 ( H H V V V V H H ) 5 6 ( H V V H V H H V ) V H. () The total state of two photons to be measured and auxlary photons can be wrtten as β Ξ 56 = the other terms , () where = ( β H H β V V ) ( β H V β V H ) V H 5
= ( β H H β V V ) H ( β H V β V H ) V = ( β H H β V V ) ( β H V β V H ) V H () = ( β H H β V V ) H ( β H V β V H ) V whle the other terms contan only states orthogonal to ± 5 ± 6. In Eq., analogous to Eq. 6, we have ncluded terms for the reasons that become apparent later. Bell measurement on photon pars (,5) and (,6) proects the remanng photons on provded that the measurement outcome s 5 6. Moreover, f the result of Bell measurement s, 5 6 or 5 6 the remanng photons are n 5 6 the state, or, respectvely, whch can be easly transformed to the state by the followng one-photon untary operaton Z = = Z () Z Z = In these equatons Z acts only on the -th photon and Z = Z H H V V =. (5) The measurement performed on photon completes the scheme, whch n ths partcular case succeeds wth the probablty /. 6
Fnally we would lke to menton that f we restrct ourselves to perform the party flter operaton P ˆ = H H H H V V V V as n the case of Hofmann s and Takeuch s scheme, we can further smplfy the auxlary photon state as follows ( H H V V V V H H ) Ξ =. (6) Ths four-photon entangled state s the cost we have to pay (n comparson wth two auxlary photons used n the scheme of Hofmann and Takeuch) n order to perform party flter operaton wth the probablty / nstead of Hofmann s and Takeuch s / 6. In concluson, we have presented lnear optcs mplementaton of general proectve measurement of two-photon polarzaton state, whch succeeds wth a probablty of at least /6. We have also shown that n the case of the realzaton of the party operator the probablty of success s /.
