An Explct Constructon of Quantum Expanders Avraham Ben-Aroya Oded Schwartz Amnon Ta-Shma arxv: v1 [quant-ph] 6 Sep 2007 Abstract Quantum expanders are a natural generalzaton of classcal expanders. These objects were ntroduced and studed by [1, 3, 4]. In ths note we show how to construct explct, constant-degree quantum expanders. The constructon s essentally the classcal Zg-Zag expander constructon of [5], appled to quantum expanders. 1 Introducton Classcal expanders are graphs of low degree and hgh connectvty. One way to measure the expanson of a graph s through the second egenvalue of ts adjacency matrx. Ths paper nvestgates the quantum counterpart of these objects, defned as follows. For a lnear space V we denote by L(V) the space of lnear operators from V to tself. Defnton 1.1. We say an admssble superoperator G : L(V) L(V) s D-regular f G = 1 D d G d, and for each d [D], G d (X) = U d XU d for some untary transformaton U d over V. Defnton 1.2. An admssble superoperator G : L(V) L(V) s a (N, D, λ) quantum expander f dm(v) = N, G s D-regular and: G(Ĩ) = Ĩ, where Ĩ denotes the completely-mxed state. For any ρ L(V) that s orthogonal to Ĩ (wth respect to the Hlbert-Schmdt nner product,.e. Tr(ρĨ) = 0) t holds that G(A) λ A (where X = Tr(XX )). A quantum expander s explct f G can be mplemented by a quantum crcut of sze polynomal n log(n). The noton of quantum expanders was ntroduced and studed by [1, 3, 4]. These papers gave several constructons and applcatons of these objects. The dsadvantage of all the constructons gven by these papers s that each constructon s ether constant-degree or explct, but not both. In ths paper we show how to construct explct quantum expanders of constant-degree. Our constructon s an easy generalzaton of the Zg-Zag expander constructon gven n [5]. 2 2 Prelmnares We denote by H N the Hlbert space of dmenson N. For a lnear space V, we denote by L(V) the space of lnear operators from V to tself. We use the Hlbert-Schmdt nner product on ths space,.e. for X,Y L(V) ther nner product s X,Y = Tr(XY ). The nner product gves rse to a norm X = X,X = s (X) 2, where {s (X)} are the sngular values of X. Throughout the paper ths s the only norm we use. We also denote by U(V) the set of all untary operators on V, and by T(V) the space of superopeartors on V (.e. T(V) = L(L(V))). Fnally, we denote by Ĩ the dentty operator normalzed such that Tr(Ĩ) = 1. That s, Ĩ denotes the completely mxed state (on the approprate space). 3 Explct constant-degree quantum expanders 3.1 The basc operatons The constructon uses as buldng blocks the followng operatons: Squarng: For a superoperator G T(V) we denote by G 2 the superoperator gven by G 2 (X) = G(G(X)) for any X L(V). Tensorng: For superoperators G 1 T(V 1 ) and G 2 T(V 2 ) we denote by G 1 G 2 the superoperator gven by (G 1 G 2 )(X Y ) = G 1 (X) G 2 (Y ) for any X L(V 1 ),Y L(V 2 ). Zg-Zag product: For superoperators G 1 T(V 1 ) and G 2 T(V 2 ) we denote by G 1 z G 2 ther Zg-Zag product. A formal defnton of ths s gven n Secton 4. The only requrement s that G 1 s dm(v 2 )-regular. Proposton 3.1. If G s a (N,D,λ) quantum expander then G 2 s a (N,D 2,λ 2 ) quantum expander. If G s explct then so s G 2. Proposton 3.2. If G 1 s a (N 1,,λ 1 ) quantum expander and G 2 s a (N 2,D 2,λ 2 ) quantum expander then G 1 G 2 s a (N 1 N 2, D 2,max(λ 1,λ 2 )) quantum expander. If G 1 and G 2 are explct then so s G 1 G 2. Theorem 1. If G 1 s a (N 1,,λ 1 ) quantum expander and G 2 s a (,D 2,λ 2 ) quantum expander then G 1 z G 2 s a (N 1,D 2 2,λ 1 + λ 2 + λ 2 2 ) quantum expander. If G 1 and G 2 are explct then so s G 1 z G 2. The proofs of Propostons 3.1 and 3.2 are trval. The proof of Theorem 1 s gven n Secton The constructon The constructon starts wth some constant-degree quantum expander, and teratvely ncreases ts sze va alternatng operatons of squarng, tensorng and Zg-Zag products. The tensorng s used to square the dmenson of the superoperator. Then a squarng operaton mproves the second egenvalue. Fnally, the Zg-Zag product reduces the degree, wthout deteroratng the second egenvalue too much. 2
Suppose H s a (D 8,D,λ) quantum expander. We defne a seres of superoperators as follows. The frst two superoperators are G 1 = H 2 and G 2 = H H. For every t > 2 we defne G t = ( G t 1 2 G t 1 2 ) 2 z H. Theorem 2. For every t > 0, G t s an explct (D 8t,D 2,λ t ) quantum expander wth λ t = λ+o(λ 2 ). The proof of ths Theorem for classcal expanders was gven n [5]. The proof only reles on the propertes of the basc operatons. Proposton 3.1, Proposton 3.2 and Theorem 1 assure the requred propertes of the basc operatons are satsfed n the quantum case as well. Hence, the proof of ths theorem s dentcal to the one n [5] (Theorem 3.3) and we omt t. 3.3 The base superoperator Theorem 2 reles on the exstence of a good base superoperator H. In the classcal settng, the probablstc method assures us that a good base graph exsts, and so we can use an exhaustve search to fnd one. The quantum settng exhbts a smlar phenomena: Theorem 3. ([4]) There exsts a D 0 such that for every D > D 0 there exst a (D 8,D,λ) quantum expander for λ = 4 D 1 D 1. We wll use an exhaustve search to fnd such a quantum expander. To do ths we frst need to transform the searched doman from a contnuous space to a dscrete one. We do ths by usng a net of untary matrces, S U(H D 8). S has the property that for any untary matrx U U(H D 8) there exsts some V U S such that sup X =1 UXU V U XV U λ. It s not hard to verfy that ndeed such S exsts, wth sze dependng only on D and λ. Moreover, we can fnd such a set n tme dependng only on D and λ 2. Suppose G s a (D 8,D,λ) quantum expander, G(X) = 1 D D =1 U XU. We denote by G the superoperator G (X) = 1 D D =1 V U XV U. Let X L(H D 8) be orthogonal to Ĩ. Then: G (X) = 1 D D V U XV 1 U D =1 D U XU + 1 D =1 G(X) + λ X 2λ X. D U XU V U XV U Hence, G s a (D 8,D, 8 D 1 D ) quantum expander 3. Ths mples that we can fnd a good base superoperator n tme whch depends only on D and λ. 1 [4] actually shows that for any D there exst a (D 8, D, (1 + O(D 16/15 log D)) 2 D 1 ) quantum expander. 2 D One way to see ths s usng the Solovay-Ktaev theorem (see, e.g., [2]). The theorem assures us that, for example, the set of all the quantum crcuts of length O(log 4 ǫ 1 ) generated only by Hadamard and Tofoll gates gve an ǫ-net of untares. The accuracy of the net s measured dfferently n the Solovay-Ktaev theorem, but t can be verfed that the accuracy measure we use here s roughly equvalent. 3 We can actually get an egenvalue bound of (1+ǫ) 2 D 1 for an arbtrary small ǫ on the expense of ncreasng D D 0. =1 3
4 The Zg-Zag product Suppose G 1,G 2 are two superoperators, G T(H N ), and G s a (N,D,λ ) quantum expander. We further assume that N 2 =. G 1 s regular and so t can be expressed as G 1 (X) = 1 d U dxu d for some untares U d U(H N1 ). We lft the ensemble {U d } to a superoperator U L(H N1 H D1 ) defned by: U( a b ) = U b a b, and we defne G 1 T(H N1 H D1 ) by G 1 (X) = UX U. Defnton 4.1. Let G 1,G 2 be as above. The Zg-Zag product, G 1 z G 2 T(H N1 H D1 ) s defned to be (G 1 z G 2 )X = (I G 2 ) G 1 (I G 2 )X. We clam: Proposton 4.2. For any X,Y L(H N1 H D1 ) such that X s orthogonal to the dentty operator we have: where f(λ 1,λ 2 ) = λ 1 + λ 2 + λ 2 2. And as a drect corollary we get: G 1 z G 2 X, Y f(λ 1,λ 2 ) X Y Theorem 1. If G 1 s a (N 1,,λ 1 ) quantum expander and G 2 s a (,D 2,λ 2 ) quantum expander then G 1 z G 2 s a (N 1,D 2 2,λ 1 + λ 2 + λ 2 2 ) quantum expander. If G 1 and G 2 are explct then so s G 1 z G 2. Proof: Let X be orthogonal to Ĩ and let Y = (G 1 z G 2 )X. By Proposton 4.2 Y 2 f(λ 1,λ 2 ) X Y. Equvalently, (G 1 z G 2 )X f(λ 1,λ 2 ) X as requred. The explctness of G 1 z G 2 s mmedate from the defnton of the Zg-Zag product. We now turn to the proof of Proposton 4.2. We adapt the proof gven n [5] for the classcal case to the quantum settng. For that we need to work wth lnear operators nstead of workng wth vectors. Consequently, we replace the vector nner-product used n the classcal proof wth the Hlbert-Schmdt nner product on lnear operators, and replace the Eucldean norm on vectors, wth the Tr(XX ) norm on lnear operators. Interestngly, the same proof carres over to ths generalzed settng. One can get the proof below by smply gong over the proof n [5] and dong the above translaton. We provde the detals here for completeness. Proof of Proposton 4.2: We frst decompose the space L(H N1 H D1 ) to W W { } = Span σ Ĩ σ L(H N 1 ) and, { = Span σ τ σ L(H N1 ), τ L(H D1 ), } τ,ĩ = 0. 4
Decompose X to X = X + X, where X W and X W, and smlarly Y = Y + Y. By defnton, G 1 z G 2 X,Y = (I G 2 ) G 1 (I G 2 )X,Y = G 1 (I G 2 )(X + X ),(I G 2 )(Y + Y ). Openng to the four terms and pushng the absolute value nsde, we see that G 1 z G 2 X,Y G 1 (I G 2 )X,(I G 2 )Y + G 1 (I G 2 )X,(I G 2 )Y + G 1 (I G 2 )X,(I G 2 )Y + G 1 (I G 2 )X,(I G 2 )Y = G 1 X,Y + G 1 X,(I G 2 )Y + G 1 (I G 2 )X,Y + G 1 (I G 2 )X,(I G 2 )Y Where the last equalty s due to the fact that I G 2 s dentty over W (snce G 2 (Ĩ) = Ĩ). In the last three terms we have I G 2 actng on an operator from W. As expected, when ths happen the quantum expander G 2 shrnks the operator. Formally, Clam 4.3. For any Z W we have (I G 2 )Z λ 2 Z. We defer the proof for later. Havng the clam we see that, e.g., G 1 X,(I G 2 )Y G 1 X (I G 2 )Y λ 2 X Y. Smlarly, G 1 (I G 2 )X,Y λ 2 X Y and G 1 (I G 2 )X,(I G 2 )Y λ 2 2 X Y. To bound the frst term, we notce that on nputs from W the operator G 1 mmcs the operaton of G 1 wth a random seed. Formally, Clam 4.4. For any A W orthogonal to the dentty operator and any B W we have G 1 A,B λ 1 A B. We agan defer the proof for later. Havng the clam we see that G 1 X,Y λ 1 X Y. Denotng p = and, ρ ρ and q = ρ ρ (for = 1,2, ρ 1 = X and ρ 2 = Y ) we see that p 2 +q2 = 1, (G 1 z G 2 )X,Y (p 1 p 2 λ 1 + p 1 q 2 λ 2 + p 2 q 1 λ 2 + q 1 q 2 λ 2 2 ) X Y Elementary calculus now shows that ths s bounded by f(λ 1,λ 2 ) X Y. We stll have to prove the two clams: Proof of Clam 4.3: Z can be wrtten as Z = σ τ, where each τ s perpendcular to Ĩ and {σ } s an orthogonal set. Hence, (I G 2 )Z = σ G 2 (τ ) σ G 2 (τ ) λ 2 σ τ = λ 2 Z. 5
And, Proof of Clam 4.4: Snce A,B W, they can be wrtten as A = σ Ĩ = 1 σ B = η Ĩ = 1 η. Moreover, snce A s perpendcular to the dentty operator, t follows that σ s perpendcular to the dentty operator on the space L(H N1 ). Ths means that applyng G 1 on σ wll shrnk t by at least a factor of λ 1. Consderng the nner product G 1 A,B = 1 D1 2 ) Tr (((U σu ) (η j j ) ),j = 1 ( j ) D1 2 Tr (U σu η ) j,j = 1 ( ) D1 2 Tr (U σu η ) = 1 ( D1 2 Tr U σu η ) (( ) ) = 1 1 Tr U σu η = 1 G 1 (σ),η λ 1 σ η = λ 1 A B, where the nequalty follows from the expanson property of G 1 (and Cauchy-Schwartz).
