1 Entanglement measures and the Hlbert-Schmdt dstance Masanao Ozawa School of Informatcs and Scences, Nagoya Unversty, Chkusa-ku, Nagoya , Japan Abstract arxv:quant-ph/236 3 Feb 2 In order to construct a measure of entanglement on the bass of a dstance" between two states, t s one of desrable propertes that the dstance" s nonncreasng under every completely postve trace preservng map. Contrary to a recent clam, ths letter shows that the Hlbert-Schmdt dstance does not have ths property. PACS: 3.67-a Keywords: entanglement; completely postve maps; operatons; Hlbert-Schmdt norm As classcal nformaton arses from probablty correlaton between two random varables, quantum nformaton arses from entanglement [, 2]. Motvated by the fndng of an entangled state whch does not volate Bell's nequalty, the problem of quantfyng entanglement has receved an ncreasng nterest recently. Vedral et. al. [3] proposed three necessary condtons that any measure of entanglement has to satsfy and showed that f a dstance" between two states has the property that t s nonncreasng under every completely postve trace preservng map (to be referred to as the CP nonexpansve property), the dstance" of a state to the set of dsentangled states satsfes ther condtons. It has been shown that the quantum relatveentropy and the Bures metrc have the CP nonexpansve property [3], and t has been conjectured that so does the Hlbert-Schmdt dstance [4]. In the nterestng Letter [5], Wtte and Trucks clamed that the Hlbert-Schmdt dstance really has the CP nonexpansve property and conjectured that the dstance generates a measure of entanglement satsfyng even the stronger condton posed later by Vedral and Pleno [4]. However, t can be readly seen that ther suggested proof ncludes a serous gap. In ths Letter, t wll be shown that, contrary to ther clam, the Hlbert-Schmdt dstance does not have the CP nonexpansve property by presentng a counterexample. Let H = H ΩH 2 be the Hlbert space of a quantum system consstng of two subsystems wth Hlbert spaces H and H 2.We assume that H and H 2 have the same fnte dmenson. We shall consder the noton of entanglement wth respect to the above two subsystems. Let T be the set of densty operators on H. The set D of dsentangled states s the set of all convex combnatons of pure tensor product states. There are several requrements that every measure of entanglement, E, should satsfy [3, 4]: (E) E(ff) = for all ff 2D.
2 (E2) For any famly of bounded operators fv g of the form V = A Ω B such that P V y V = I, P (a) E( P V ffv y )» E(ff), (b) Tr[V ff V y ]E(V ff V y =Tr[V ff V y ])» E(ff). Condton (E) ensures that dsentangled states have a zero value of entanglement. Condton (E2) ensures that the amount ofentanglement does not ncrease totally or n average by so-called purfcaton procedures. Note that (E2-a) mples the followng condton: (E3) E(ff) =E(U Ω U 2 ffu y Ω U2) y for all untary operators U on H for =; 2. Condton (E3) ensures that a local change of bass has no effect on the amount of entanglement. Vedral et. al. [3] proposed the followng general constructon of the measure of entanglement E. Let D : T T!Rbeafuncton satsfyng the followng condtons: (D) D(ff;ρ) and D(ff;ff) = for any ff;ρ2t. (D2) D( ff; ρ)» D(ff;ρ) for any ff;ρ 2T and for any completely postve trace preservng map on the space of operators on H. Condton (D) ensures that D has some propertes of dstance". Condton (D2) ensures that the dstance" does not ncrease by any nonselectve operatons. Then, t s shown that the dstance" E(ff) of a state ff to the set D of dsentangled states defned by E(ff) = nf D(ff;ρ) () ρ2d satsfes condtons (E) and (E2-a). It s shown that the quantum relatve entropy and the Bures metrc satsfy (D) and (D2) [3], and t s conjectured that the Hlbert-Schmdt dstance s a reasonable canddate of a dstance" to generate an entanglement measure [4]. Here, the Hlbert-Schmdt dstance s defned by D HS (ff;ρ)=kff ρk 2 HS =Tr[(ff ρ) 2 ] for all ff;ρ2t, whch satsfes (D) snce kff ρk HS s a true metrc. Recently, Wtte and Trucks [5] clamed that the Hlbert-Schmdt dstance also satsfes (D2) and that the prospectve measure of entanglement, E HS, defned by E HS (ff) = nf D HS (ff;ρ) ρ2d satsfes (E) and (E2-a). It should be ponted out frst that ther suggested proof of condton (D2) for D HS s not justfed. Let f be a convex functon on (; ) and let f() =. Let Φ be a trace preservng postve map on the space of operators such that kφk». Then, Lndblad's theorem [6] asserts that for every postve operator A we have Tr[f(ΦA)]» Tr[f(A)]; (2) where f(a) s defned as usual through the spectral resoluton of A. It s suggested that wth the help of the above theorem t can be shown that D HS ( ff; ρ)» D HS (ff;ρ) (3) 2
3 by regardng D HS as a convex functon on T + (H) ΦT + (H) for all postve mappngs. However, t s not clear at all how D HS and satsfy the assumptons of Lndblad's theorem. Now, we shall show a counterexample to the clam that D HS satsfes condton (D2). Let A and B be 4 4 matrces defned by Then we have A = A y A = It follows that A y A + B y B = I 4 and hence CA ; B = ff = AffA y + BffB y ; where ff s arbtrary, defnes a completely postve trace preservng map. Let ff and ρ be densty matrces defned by Then we have and hence ff = On the other hand, we have AffA y = AρA y = =2 =2 (ff ρ) 2 = CA ; ρ = =2 =2 =4 =4 =4 =4 D HS (ff;ρ)=tr[(ff ρ) 2 ]=: =2 =2 CA ; BffBy = CA ; BρBy = 3 CA =2 =2 CA ;
4 It follows that and hence We conclude therefore ( ff ρ) 2 = D HS ( ff; ρ) =Tr[( ff ρ) 2 ]=2: D HS ( ff; ρ) >D HS (ff;ρ): From the above counterexample, we conclude that the nequalty D HS ( ff; ρ)» D HS (ff;ρ) s not generally true for completely postve trace preservng maps. Therefore, t s stll qute open whether E HS s a good canddate for an entanglement measure or not. In order to obtan a tght bound for D HS ( ff; ρ), we take advantage of Kadson's nequalty [7]: If Φ s a postve map, then we have CA Φ(A) 2»kΦk Φ(A 2 ) (4) for all Hermtan A. Applyng the above nequalty to the postve trace preservng map Φ= anda = ff ρ, wehave ( ff ρ) 2»k k [(ff ρ) 2 ]: By takng the trace of the both sdes we obtan the followng concluson: For any trace preservng postve map and any states ff and ρ, we have D HS ( ff; ρ)»k kd HS (ff;ρ): (5) The prevous example shows that the bound can be attaned wth k k =2.
