1 Appendix A: True Color Ortho-Photography and Classified Marsh Cover Maps for Ten Marsh Study Sites Kevan B. Moffett* 1, Jaslyn Law 2, Steven M. Gorelick 3, Nadav Nur 4, and Julian K. Wood 4 * Corresponding author: kboffett@jsg.utexas.edu 1 Departent of Geological Sciences, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX USA 2 Earth Systes Progra, Stanford University, Stanford, CA USA 3 Departent of Environental Earth Syste Science, Stanford University, Stanford, CA USA 4 Point Blue Conservation Science, Petalua, CA USA BACKGROUND This appendix contains true color ortho-photography (EarthData International 2004) and classified arsh cover aps for the 10 arsh sites studied in the ain paper, Alaeda Song Sparrow Abundance Related to Salt Marsh Vegetation Patch Size and Shape Metrics Quantified fro Reote Sensing Iagery." 1. Cogswell Marsh 2. Whale's Tail Marsh 3. Jarvis Landing Marsh 4. Dubarton Point 5. Palo Alto Baylands 6. Faber Tract 7. Laueister Tract 8. Cooley Landing Backshore 9. Ravenswood Slough 10. Eastern Bair Island The goal of the study was to identify the relationship between Alaeda song sparrow (Melospiza elodia pusillula) abundance (expressed as bird density index) and the planietric shapes exhibited by different types of arsh surface cover. As such, the classified aps needed to capture the boundaries between adjacent arsh surface types but did not need to accurately identify the specific type of arsh cover at any given location. Cover coposition was not analyzed as a contributing variable (covariate). The only etric of accuracy that was relevant to the ethods and results of this study was whether the boundaries between classes apped as different colors in the following aps reflected true texture and boundaries aong adjacent cover types. It was atheatically iaterial to this study s analysis and results whether, for exaple, all purple areas in the following aps (Class 4, loosely identified as Grindelia stricta or Bolboschoenus aritius) were in fact occupied by these species, as long as the boundaries between purple and non-purple classes were reasonable.
