18 On the spot calibration: methodology Before applying the methodology for the long term prediction related to Pianosa island, the same has been verified in six different sites of North America for the availability of measurements useful for this purpose. The sites are included in the following marine area: AREA_NW: marine area located near the coast of State of Washington AREA_NE: marine area located near the coast of State of Massachusetts AREA_SW: marine area located near the coast of State of California AREA_SE: marine area located near the coast of State of Florida a)national Data Bouy Center ( NDBC ) b)climatology of Global Ocean Winds (COGOW) 18

21 Pianosa long term mean wind speed estimation: satellite data correlation Annual Profile Y e a r Va_rif (m/s) QUIKscat Va_esa (m/s) Pianosa The overall Pianosa measurement campaign ( ) revealed that the average annual wind speed is between 5.7 and 5.8 m/s. This value shows a very good agreement with the long-term estimation(vlp_esa) performed using satellite data at the end of
