EUMETSAT Climate Activities Jörg Schulz
EUMETSAT s Role in Climate Monitoring EUMETSAT has a prominent role in the world for providing services relevant to climate: EUMETSAT maintains some of the longest satellite time series; EUMETSAT has instruments in space providing benchmark quality measurements serving as reference for instruments from other space agencies; EUMETSAT has the capability to enhance the value of past observations through inter-satellite calibration and reprocessing; EUMETSAT with its Satellite Application Facility network will generate data records contributing to 17 GCOS ECVs (10 Atmospheric, 2 Oceanic, 5 Terrestrial) within the next four years; All EUMETSAT contributions relevant to Climate will add value to the Copernicus Climate Change Service and are under oversight of EUMETSAT member states.
EUMETSAT Space Segment YEAR METEOSAT FIRST GENERATION METEOSAT-7 METEOSAT SECOND GENERATION METEOSAT-8 METEOSAT-9 EUMETSAT POLAR SYSTEM (EPS) METOP-A JASON JASON-2 MSG-3/METEOSAT-10 MSG-4/METEOSAT-11* METEOSAT THIRD GENERATION MTG-I-1 MTG-S-1 Meteosat First Generation Data Coverage starts in 1981 METOP-B GMES JASON-3 SENTINEL-3 METOP-C MTG-I-2 MTG-I-3 MTG-S-2 EPS-SECOND GENERATION (EPS-SG) MTG-I-4 METOP-SG SOUNDING & IMAGERY SATELLITES METOP-SG MICROWAVE SATELLITES JASON CONTINUITY OF SERVICES (JASON-CS) SENTINEL-4 ON MTG-S SENTINEL-5 ON EPS-SG Continues US heritage instruments available since 1978
EUMETSAT ECMWF Partnership on Reanalysis EUMETSAT s contribution to global reanalysis at ECMWF is unparalleled in the world: EUMETSAT is providing satellite data records with assessed and enhanced quality as input to reanalysis; EUMETSAT supports ECMWF to coordinate other space agencies input into European reanalysis; EUMETSAT together with some member states are searching and utilising old satellite data from around the world. 4 Figure Courtesy of Paul Poli, ECMWF
From observations to information New opportunities in climate modelling using long-term satellite observations Example Sahel drought: How does the land surface affect droughts? EUMETSAT Surface Albedo Climate Data Record Courtesy of Alexander Loew, MPI-M, Hamburg, Germany
Involvement of EUMETSAT Member States Climate Monitoring Led by Deutscher Wetterdienst Germany Numerical Weather Prediction Led by Met Office (UK) The Satellite Application Facility Network Radio Occultation Meteorology (formerly GRAS SAF) Led by Danish Meteorological Institute Support to Operational Hydrology and Water Management Led by Italian Meteorological Institute Support to Nowcasting and Very Short Range Forecasting Led by Agencia Estatal de Meteorologia Spain Ocean and Sea Ice Led by Meteo France Land Surface Analysis Led by Portuguese Meteorological Institute Ozone and Atmospheric Chemistry Monitoring Led by Finnish Meteorological Institute
Climate Monitoring Architecture: Logical Representation EUMETSAT MANDATE European and National Services
Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Conceptual View of End-to-End Provision of Essential Climate Variables To be successful European and Global coordination mechanism need to maintained.
Conclusion EUMETSAT provides the operational space segment and high-quality Climate Data Records produced in operational service oriented environment; EUMETSAT data records are input to downstream activities as SAFs, reanalysis and ESA-CCI projects with strong direct member state participation; Reanalysis activities and ECV Climate Data Record production needs coordination at European and world wide level to be efficient and affordable; EUMETSAT s role in a Climate Change Service may cover: Sustained provision of climate data records as in FP7 ERA-CLIM, ERA-CLIM2, QA4ECV and through the SAF network; Scientific work for improvement of climate data records as in FP7 QA4ECV; User and system requirements analysis From policy needs via applications to the space system; Progress monitoring towards completeness of services and quality monitoring of products as developed in FP7 CORE-CLIMAX; European and global coordination of space agency activities in science and services; Capacity building.
