Day 2: Hatfield to St James Doncaster via Doncaster Minster OVERVIEW Getting there & parking: Tuesday 19 September Sat Nav: aim for DN7 6HN, 2 Vicarage Close park at the vicarage (second drive on the right, large grey building) 32 miles via J4 of the M18; Google gives 46 min outside of rush hour. Allow 1h+ Contact: Liz Turner-Loisel, Edenthorpe: Steve Beck, Minster: David Stevens, St James Doncaster: Chris McCarthy I have asked Chris to arrange a lift back to Hatfield Timing and distances miles in the morning, depending on the route chosen 3.8 miles in the afternoon to the Minster & then 0.7 miles to St James 09:15 Arrive Hatfield & begin walking Arrive Edenthorpe 11:30 Prayer event in church with the church school 12:00 Lunch provided in church, with local Christians and possibly teachers too 12:45 Depart Edenthorpe: 3.8 miles at 2 miles an hour 14:45 Arrive Doncaster Minster 15:00 Minster Eucharist (assume 1 hour service & socialising; then 15 min walk) 16:15 Arrive St James Doncaster to pray for about 30 min 8 miles / 17 min back to Hatfield if you need to collect your car
Day 2, stage 1: Hatfield to Edenthorpe Broadway St Mary s Road From the church, head S on Station Rd initially Continue S into Manor Rd, which is the A18 You can follow the A18 all the way = the shortest route = 3.8 miles & there is a footpath all the way into the edge of Doncaster Variation 1: S on Carr Side Lane & then back to the main road on Woodhouse Lane. This adds 0.6 miles but gives a break from the A road. To follow this, turn L off the A18 at the Church & Manor View Rest Home. NB. There is no pavement in Woodhouse La so this might not be such a good variant. Variation 2: alternatively, follow the A18 a little further & turn R into Coppice Lane to follow the bridleway that heads WSW under the word Dunscroft on the map. You can regain the A18 via either Broadway or St Mary s Road (see arrows above). This detour does not adds as much distance at variant 1 Continues on next sheet
Day 2, stage 2: Hatfield to Edenthorpe Church of the Good Shepherd Continue down the A18 to the roundabout Cross (care needed: busy junction) & continue in on A18, passing Tesco Turn R into Church Balk (yellow road on the map above) Church and school are on the RHS of the road
Day 2, stage 3: Edenthorpe to Doncaster Minster & St James The 1:50000 map will be adequate for this section of the pilgrimage because the following page will have turn-by-turn Google directions based on road names. Basic description: Head NW on Church Balk Take the yellow road heading SW under the railway line & cross the dual carriageway Walk down through Wheatley to the Infirmary Turn half R there & follow the roads into town past 2 more churches The Minster = church with tower symbol, just past Doncaster College The final stage of the journey takes you to St James ( church with spire symbol) which is just the other side of the railway line but people from St James will accompany you See over for full description
Day 2, stage 3: Edenthorpe to Doncaster Minster & St James turn-by-turn description Additional notes: At the bottom of Barnby Dun Rd, turn L onto the A630 to access the pedestrian crossing Walk back to the roundabout & continue into town on Barnby Dun Rd The Minster is prominent When you see it, stay on LHS of the dual carriageway (market) There is a pedestrian crossing just before the Minster Simpler than Google s final instructions
Day 2, stage 4: Doncaster Minster to St James turn-by-turn description This route gets you off the dual carriageway & through the town centre pedestrianised area Head towards the station Cross the dual carriageway L into Frenchgate R into St Sepulchre Gate Slight L into W Laith Gate St Sepulchre Gate again Crossing over A630 R in from of Flying Scotsman Health Centre Regain St Sepulchre Gate Follow this to St James Church You should have people from St James with you, so you may not need these instructions
