Year Video Rental Income Video Arcade Income 1980 $15,000 $25, $18,000 $20, $22,000 $15, $26,500 $12, $31,800 $10, Make a double line graph of the data shown. 2. In approximately which year were the two incomes equal? 3. What would you predict for video rental income in 2005? 4. What would you predict for video arcade income in 2005? 5 Double Bar Graph The age-adjusted prevalence of combined overweight and obesity (BMI 25) in racial/ethnic minorities--especially minority women--is generally higher than in whites in the United States. Black women (20+ years old): 65.8 percent Mexican-American women (20+ years old): 65.9 percent White women (20+ years old): 49.2 percent Black men (20+ years old): 56.5 percent Mexican-American men (20+ years old): 63.9 percent White men (20+ years old): 61.0 percent Studies using this definition of overweight and obesity (BMI 25) provide ethnicity-specific data only for these three racial-ethnic groups. Studies using other definitions of overweight and obesity, as described earlier, find a high prevalence of overweight and obesity among Hispanics and Native Americans. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in Asian Americans is lower than in the general population. Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation, and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults, National Institutes of Health, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, June Using data from the information above, create a double bar graph showing percentages of obesity of men and women in each ethnic group. 6 Beliefs About UFOs Galileo was threatened because he believed that the Earth went around the Sun and many people believed the Sun went around the Earth. A survey was given to people asking what they think about UFOs. They could choose among the following: Military: Most UFOs are our own planes or other manmade machines. Natural: Most UFOs are natural things such as planets, comets, meteors, gas balls. Hoaxes: Most UFOs are invented by people who like to play jokes. LGM: (Little Green Men) UFOs are ships from outer space. Hoaxes Natural LGM Military 1. What do most people think UFOs are? 2. Which two answers got about the same number of responses? 3. If 1000 people were surveyed, about how many answered in each category? 4. About what fraction of the people thought UFOs were a natural event? Page 186 Classroom Strategies Blackline Master IV - 6

9 Asteroid Study Here is a chart of some of the asteroids that have been named. Name Diameter Orbital Period (miles) (Earth years) Ceres Pallas Juno Vesta Astraea Hebe Iris Flora Metis Hygeia Gaspra 10 Mathilde 33 --One of Isaac Asimov s first short stories was named Marooned Off Vesta. Notes: --There are about 30,000 asteroids in orbit between Mars and Jupiter. NASA mission NEAR (Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous) was launched in 1996 to explore the asteroids. 1. Find the mean and the median for the diameters of the asteroids listed. Median Mean - 2. Find the average orbital period of these asteroids. Some scientists think the asteroid belt is the remnant of a planet which exploded. If there was a planet there, how long do you think it took it to go around the sun? 3. Round the diameters to the nearest 100. Ceres Pallas Juno Vesta Astraea Hebe Iris Flora Metis Hygeia Gaspra Mathilde 4. What is the mode of the diameters after they have been rounded to the nearest hundred? 5. Many more of the 30,000 asteroids have been catalogued and measured. The ones listed include the first ones discovered and the ones explored by NEAR. If we had measurements from all the asteroids, do you think the mode you found in example number four would be close to the mode of the entire set? Why or why not?
