5 It s Snowing on Jupiter Did you know there are clouds on Jupiter? Scientists have known for a long time that Jupiter has huge, swirling clouds. These clouds look different from our clouds on Earth. Now, scientists have discovered that there are other clouds on Jupiter that look more like our clouds on Earth. These clouds are white and fluffy-looking, like we see in Earth s sky. The clouds are very large, up to 50 miles (or 80 kilometers) wide. They are also very high in Jupiter s atmosphere, so scientists think that the clouds are very cold and produce either snow or hail. Scientists know about these clouds because of new pictures taken by a spacecraft called Juno. The Juno spacecraft orbited Jupiter and took pictures of the planet. The Juno spacecraft was launched in 2011, and it reached Jupiter in This spacecraft is the first solar-powered satellite sent to Jupiter. Juno also has other missions on Jupiter. Scientists want Juno to do these things: Study Jupiter s gravity and magnetic fields. Measure water in Jupiter s atmosphere. Scientists think this will help them learn about how the planet was formed. Take photographs of Jupiter in different kinds of light (ultraviolet, infrared, and visible light). Scientists hope that Juno will help them understand Jupiter and other large planets that are now being discovered. It will be interesting to see what new things that Juno tells us about Jupiter.
