The Spartans host the Wolverines at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field on Thursday, May 18 and Saturday, May 20, while playing at UM s Wilpon Complex in Ann Arbor on Friday, May 19. Saturday is MSU s Senior Day, as the Spartans will honor their seniors in a pre-game ceremony. The Spartans are coming off their second shutout of the season with a 7-0 victory for MSU at Central Michigan on Tuesday. MSU was edged in a three-game series over the weekend at No. 25 Nebraska, winning the opener, 6-3, Friday night before losing Saturday s game, 5-2 and getting nipped, 8-7, in Sunday s series finale. MSU won its two midweek games against in-state foes last week, edging Western Michigan, 7-6, on Tuesday at Comerica Park on a walkoff in the bottom of the ninth, then returning home to beat Eastern Michigan, 11-6, on Wednesday. No. 15 Michigan is overall and 14-7 in B1G play, entering the final weekend challenging for the regular-season title, currently sitting in third, but just a half-game out of the top spot. UM is coming off a 12-4 win over Eastern Michigan on Tuesday. In their last B1G action, the Wolverines swept a three-game series at Purdue, winning the opener 2-0 on Friday, then capturing the series with a 9-4 victory on Saturday before completing the sweep with a 5-1 win on Sunday. New King In Spartan Lore Junior center fielder Brandon Hughes became the MSU single-season stolen base record holder, swiping his 30th base of the season in Tuesday s 7-0 victory for MSU at Central Michigan. Hughes swiped three stolen bases in the game, giving him the record and passing the previous mark of 29 by Anthony Cheky in Hughes has nine stolen bases in his last eight games, rapidly climbing up the MSU stolen base list. The older Salter brother, Blaise, is a Spartan alum ( ) and currently playing for the West Michigan Whitecaps. Their grandfather is Bill Freehan, who is a Michigan alum and played catcher/first base for the Detroit Tigers, and later was head coach at Michigan. Boss Has Been On Both Sides Michigan State head coach Jake Boss Jr., is in his ninth season at the helm of the Spartans. Boss was an assistant coach at Michigan from , before becoming head coach at Eastern Michigan for the 2008 season prior to becoming head coach of the Spartans. Not only are two players from opposite sides of Tuesday s game from the same hometown of Bloomfield Hills, but from the same house in the Salter brothers in Spartan junior catcher Will and Wolverine freshman catcher Harrison. The older Salter brother, Blaise, is a Spartan alum ( ) and currently playing for the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Salter s grandfather is Bill Freehan, who played at Michigan, where he was an All-American in 1961 and played for the Detroit Tigers from , where he was an 11-time All-Star and was also head coach for the Wolverines from There are two sets of a trio players involved in Tuesday s game that are from the same hometown. The first set are natives of Rockford, Michigan and Rockford High School alums in MSU junior infielder Kory Young and freshman outfielder Bryce Kelley along with UM freshman pitcher/ outfielder Jack Weisenburger. The second set are natives of Portage, Michigan but different high schools in MSU freshman outfielder Joe Stewart, who went to Portage Central HS, and UM freshman pitcher Benjamin Keizer and freshman pitcher/outfielder Tommy Henry, who both went to Portage Northern HS. Spartan freshman pitcher Mitchell Tryanski and Wolverine freshman pitcher Karl Kauffmann are both natives of Bloomfield Hills and went to Brother Rice HS Head Coach Jake Boss, Jr., Hits 300 Career Wins, Closing In On Another 300 MSU head coach Jake Boss, Jr., won his 300th career game as a collegiate head coach with the 13-4 victory for MSU over Richmond on March 18. Boss is in his ninth season as head coach of the Spartans and he now has an overall record of (.574) in his 10 overall years as a collegiate head coach. He has a (.592) record at the helm of the MSU program, closing in on reaching the 300-win plateau mark as the Spartan head coach. Nebraska loaded the bases without any outs in the bottom of the second, but MSU got out of the jam with a triple play. Jesse Wilkening hit a chopper to third, where Spartan sophomore third baseman Marty Bechina snared it, stepped on the bag at third, then fired to senior second baseman Dan Durkin at second, who turned and threw to McGuire at first to complete the triple play. It was MSU s first triple play since 2012 in the NCAA Tournament and was the first triple play in the B1G since 2014, when Penn State had three that season. Complete Troop MSU sophomore lefty Alex Troop pitched a complete game on March 10 at No. 10 South Carolina for his first career complete game. Troop was the first pitcher in the Big Ten with a complete game this season, and is now one of eight pitchers in the Big Ten with a complete game. 9 Three With Six Or More Four-Baggers Michigan State has three players with six or more home runs, as senior second baseman Dan Durkin just took sole possession of the team lead with his seventh round-tripper in MSU s win over Eastern Michigan last Wednesday and his eighth homer in the Spartans loss at Nebraska on Sunday. Durkin is now tied for 10th in the B1G. Junior first baseman Zack McGuire and sophomore third baseman Marty Bechina have six HR each, tying for 16th in the league. Durkin has topped his career-high of six HRs from last season, while McGuire and Bechina have also both surpassed their career-bests. McGuire s previous career best was two from last season, and he has doubled his career total coming into this season as he had just one round-tripper in his freshman season. Bechina has tripled his season output of two homers last season as a freshman. Captain Dan Team captain, senior second baseman Dan Durkin has a.278 average (52- for-187). Durkin also leads MSU and ranks tied for 11th in the B1G with 40 RBI. The Spartan captain additionally leads the team and ranks tied for 10th in the league with eight home runs and is also tied for tops on the team with 15 doubles, ranking tied for third in the conference. Earning The Ice Bags Senior second baseman Dan Durkin has been hit by pitch a team-leading 13 times, which is sixth in the B1G and 52nd in the NCAA. Up Next MSU enters the final weekend of regular-season action in ninth in the Big Ten Conference standings, fighting for a spot in the B1G Tournament. The top eight teams in the regular season will advance to the Big Ten Tournament, held May at Bart Kaufman Field in Bloomington, Indiana. Chmielewski and McGuire Earn CoSIDA Academic All-District Accolades Michigan State baseball players Dan Chmielewski and Zack McGuire were named first-team Academic All-District announced on Wednesday, May 4. Both were recognized as a part of NCAA Division I District 5 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Chmielewski and McGuire are the first Spartan baseball players to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors since Brandon Eckerle in Overall, they are 14th and 15th honors, and the 13th and 14th players as Ecklerle is the Spartans lone multiple honoree. Sophomore outfielder Chmielewski is a native of Shelby Township, Michigan, and owns a 4.00 GPA in psychology. This season, Chmielewski is currently hitting.295 with 22 RBI, with nine doubles, one triple and four home runs. Chmielewski is currently tied for 10th in the Big Ten Conference with 12 stolen bases. McGuire, a junior first baseman from Sterling Heights, Michigan, owns a 3.85 GPA as a packaging major. He is currently hitting.265 with 25 RBI, including 11 doubles and shares the team-lead with six home runs. Mc- Guire is tied for 13th in the B1G in both doubles and home runs. Defensively, McGuire is fifth in the league with 340 putouts and tied for eighth in fielding double plays. District 5 consists of schools in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. The Spartan duo are two of four Big Ten Conference players earning first-team Academic All-District Team honors, joined by Michael Hendrickson of Michigan and Pat McInerney of Illinois. The two MSU players are also twofifths of the Michigan school represented, along with Hendrickson, Central Michigan s Daniel Jipping and Eastern Michigan s Brennan Williams. 10 Hughes Collects Pair of National Honors Michigan State baseball s Brandon Hughes was recognized on March 27 with a pair of national awards for his performance in the previous week in MSU s four wins, which including smacking three home runs in a game. Hughes was named one of Collegiate Baseball s National Players Of The Week as well as a USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Gold Standard Performance of the Week. Hughes, a junior outfielder from Sterling Heights, Michigan (Stevenson High School) entered last weekend without any home runs and just 12 RBI for the season, then proceeded to smash three home runs in the March 26 game alone as part of his four home runs in two games. The Spartan outfielder belted three home runs in consecutive at bats in the first five innings of MSU s 17-6 win at Illinois on March 26, hitting two of them left-handed and one right-handed. He finished the weekend with 12 RBI, including seven on Sunday. After a fly out to lead off the game, Hughes smashed a three-run home run to right center in the second inning batting left handed. Again batting left handed in the fourth, Hughes hit a two-run round-tripper to right. In the fifth, Hughes batted right handed and smashed a two-run shot to left field that bounced once and then into the street behind Illinois Field. Hughes walked on four pitches in the seventh and grounded out in the ninth. He finished the game 3-for-5 with seven RBI and three runs scored. In the doubleheader on March 24, Hughes was a combined 4-for-11, going 1-for-5 with two RBI, one run scored and one walk in the opener and then going 3-for-6 with three RBI and one run scored, belting his first home run of the season. Hughes started the week going 2-for-4 with a double and sac bunt with three runs scored in MSU s 11-2 win over Central Michigan on March 21 in MSU s home opener. For the week, Hughes hit.450 (9-for-20) with 12 RBI, four HR, two doubles, two walks and one sac bunt, as well as making 16 putouts in the outfield. Kelley Tabbed B1G Baseball Freshman of the Week Michigan State baseball s Bryce Kelley was named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week for his performance last week in MSU s four wins. Kelley, a freshman outfielder from Rockford, Michigan (Rockford High School) had a smashing Big Ten Conference debut, hitting.400 (4-for-10) in MSU s three games at Illinois over the weekend to open B1G action. For the week, Kelley hit.462 (6-for-13) for the week. This is MSU s second B1G award this season as senior second baseman Dan Durkin was the B1G Player of the Week on Feb. 20. Kelley is MSU s first Freshman of the Week accolade recipient since third baseman Marty Bechina earned the honor last season on Feb. 22, In the second game of the doubleheader at Illinois on March 24, Kelley was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored with a two-run double, adding a stolen base in the Spartans 12-1 win at Illinois. He started the week 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in MSU s 11-2 win over Central Michigan on March 21. Kelley and the Spartans won all four games last week, scoring doubledigits in all four, out-scoring the opposition 53-13, an average of Durkin Earns Big Ten Conference Player of the Week Plaudits Michigan State baseball s Dan Durkin was named the Big Ten Conference Baseball Player of the Week, announced by the conference office on Monday, Feb. 20. A senior second baseman from Tinley Park, Illinois, Durkin helped the Spartans to a 4-0 mark with a four-game series sweep at Abilene Christian. The B1G Player of the Week is Durkin s first weekly conference honor of his career. He is the first Spartan to earn B1G Player of the Week accolades since Zack McGuire earned the weekly plaudits last season on May 2, It also marks the second year in a row that MSU has earned a league honor in the opening weekend, as Marty Bechina earned Freshman of the Week honors last season in the first weekend. Durkin had a smashing debut as the Spartans captain, going 9-for-18, hitting.500, with 11 RBI with four extra-base hits, and scoring six runs in the four-game series. With the 11 RBI and six runs scored, Durkin accounted for 33.3 percent of MSU s scoring as Michigan State plated 51 runs with 63 hits on the weekend, including 22 extra-base hits. He opened by going 3-for-6 in season-opener, driving in two on a single in the sixth and later scored as part of MSU s six-run inning to break open a 1-1 game and make it a 6-1 lead. In the eighth, laced a double and later came around to score insurance run. Durkin hit 2-for-3 with two RBI in the first game of the doubleheader, driving in both runs on a single in the fourth for MSU s first two of three runs in the frame as they turned a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead, a lead they never relinquished. In the nightcap, he went 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. Durkin drove in MSU s first run of the night with a double and scored the second run, both in the first inning. In the second inning, Durkin blasted a three-run home run to right as MSU broke open a 4-1 lead with five runs. In the fifth, he had a sac fly to center for an RBI, his fifth of the day. Sunday s series finale saw Durkin go 1-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. He started his day by drawing a walk in the first inning, later coming around to score as part of MSU s four-run first inning. In the fifth, he drew another walk and scored again, before belting a two-run double in the ninth as the Spartans blew the game open with a six runs, turning an 8-5 close game into a 14-5 rout. Standout Debuts In Green & White Gleaves wasn t the only Spartan newcomer to have a standout debut, as freshman outfielder Bryce Kelley blasted an RBI triple in his first collegiate at bat. On the mound, freshman right-handed reliever Sam Benschoter threw two scoreless innings of work, chalking up his first two strikeouts as a collegiate pitcher. Redshirt-sophomore Nathan Witt made his debut on the mound after missing the first two seasons due to injury, and made two appearances on the weekend with an inning and a third worth of work without allowing any hits. Freshman righty Mike Mokma threw one complete inning without a hit and right-handed starter Mason Erla was MSU s starter on Feb. 19, spraying eight hits in four innings of work.
