On evlution of the Heun functions Oleg V. Motygin Institute of Problems in Mechnicl Engineering, Russin Acdemy of Sciences, V.O., Bol shoy pr., 6, 9978 St. Petersburg, Russi emil: rxiv: v [mth.a] Jun 205 Abstrct In the pper we del with the Heun functions solutions of the Heun eqution, which is the most generl Fuchsin eqution of second order with four regulr singulr points. Despite the incresing interest to the eqution nd numerous pplictions of the functions in wide vriety of physicl problems, it is only Mple midst known softwre pckges which is ble to evlute the Heun functions numericlly. But the Mple routine is known to be imperfect: even t regulr points it my return infinities or end up with no result. Improving the sitution is difficult becuse the code is not publicly vilble. The purpose of the work is to suggest nd develop lterntive lgorithms for numericl evlution of the Heun functions. A procedure bsed on power series expnsions nd nlytic continution is suggested which llows us to void numericl integrtion of the differentil eqution nd to chieve resonble efficiency nd ccurcy. Results of numericl tests re given. Introduction In the present pper we del with the Heun functions which re solutions of the eqution introduced by Krl Heun in 889 [3] s generlition of the hypergeometric eqution. Heun s eqution is the most generl Fuchsin eqution of second order with four regulr singulr points; we refer to [2, 4, 9, 5] for comprehensive mthemticl tretment of the topic. At the sme time, it is only in recent yers when the eqution hs become populr in the physics literture. ow the Heun eqution ppers in mny fields of modern physics nd it is used to describe wide vriety of physicl phenomen comprehensive literture on physicl pplictions cn be found in [4]. As good source of informtion on the current development of the field one should lso mention The Heun project : Despite the incresing interest to the eqution, t the moment the only, to uthor s knowledge, softwre pckge ble to evlute the Heun functions numericlly is Mple. However, the code is fr from being perfect, it is not difficult to encounter problems, when for ordinry prmeters, t regulr points the routine returns infinities or spends tens seconds with no result. The qulity of the code is serious obstcle for potentilly very numerous pplictions of the functions. Improving the sitution is virtully impossible becuse the code is not publicly vilble. The purpose of the present work is to develop lterntive lgorithms for numericl evlution of the Heun functions. We suggest procedure bsed on power series expnsions nd nlytic continution which llows us to void numericl integrtion of the differentil eqution nd to chieve resonble efficiency nd ccurcy. Progrm code is presented in []. Results of numericl tests nd comprison with cse when Heun s function reduces to simple lgebric function re given. The lgorithm is pplicble for computtion of the multi-vlued Heun functions. In the present pper we lso define their single-vlued counterprts by fixtion of brnch cuts. otbly, in most studies of the Heun functions the subject is not discussed; the uthor hs lso been unble to find informtion on brnch cuts in Mple s documenttion on the Heun function. For the single-vlued functions n improvement of the lgorithm for points close to the singulr ones is described. It should be noted tht the developed lgorithms re not intended to be universl more or less ordinry prmeters re ssumed. Surely, numericl problems re expected nd specil tretment is needed for the cses of merging singulr points see [7] or lrge ccessory prmeter.
2 Sttement nd bsic nottions We strt by writing Heun s eqution in the stndrd form see [2] γ H + + δ + ε H αβ q + H = 0 with the Riemnn P -symbol: 0 P α ;. γ δ ε β The prmeter q C is usully referred to s n ccessory or uxiliry prmeter nd α, β, γ, δ, ε lso belonging to C re exponent-relted prmeters connected vi the Fuchsin reltion α + β + = γ + δ + ε. The eqution hs four regulr singulr points locted t = 0,,,. It will be ssumed below tht C, {0,, }. In the nottion of the solutions sometimes we will omit some of the prmeters so tht H = H,... ; = H, q, α, β, γ, δ;. The Frobenius method cn be used to derive locl power-series solutions to. There re 8 locl solutions of eqution two per singulr point. In 3 we will present the two locl power-series solutions in neighbourhood of the point = 0. One of them is nlytic in vicinity of ero nd if γ is not nonpositive integer, this solution, normlied to unity, is clled the locl Heun function see [2]. It is usully denoted by Hl, q, α, β, γ, δ;. For the second Frobenius locl solution we will use the nottion Hs, q, α, β, γ, δ;. When γ is nonpositive integer, one solution of is nlytic but equl to ero t = 0, wheres the second solution cn be normlied to unity but generlly is not nlytic. It cn be n rguble point, but we will denote by Hl, q, α, β, γ, δ; the normlied solution nd by Hs, q, α, β, γ, δ; the nlytic one. It is known tht generlly Hl,... ; is multi-vlued function with brnch points t =, nd nd, so, to define single-vlued function we should choose brnch cuts. In the present work we fix the brnch cuts B =, + nd B =, e i rg connecting the points nd to, respectively see fig.. The second function Hs,... ; hs the sme brnch cuts B nd B. Besides, the function Hs generlly, nd the function Hl for γ {0} Z Z mens the set of negtive integers, hve brnch point t = 0. So, we will lso define the brnch cut B 0 =, 0. It should be noted tht the choice of brnch cuts in Mple is uncler, but, definitely, differs from tht in the present pper. With the present fixtion the function definition domin is str-like with respect to ero which is nturl s we will define functions Hl, Hs by nlytic continution from vicinity of = 0 see 5. Besides, there is good greement between brnch cuts of the single-vlued functions Hl, Hs nd their representtions ner singulr points see 6. Im B B 0 B Re Figure : Brnch cuts. 2
3 Power series expnsion t the point = 0 Power series expnsion of the locl Heun function Hl, such tht Hl, q, α, β, γ, δ; 0 =, is well-known since [3] for γ {0} Z. We hve Hl, q, α, β, γ, δ; = where the coefficients b n re subject to the following three-term recurrence: Here nd the initil conditions re b n n, 2 n=0 P n b n = Q n b n + R n b n 2. 3 P n = nγ + n, Q n = q + n [ + γ + n 2 + ε + δ ], R n = n 2 + αn 2 + β b = 0, b 0 =. The Heun function Hl is nlytic in the circle < R 0, where R 0 is the distnce from ero to the nerest singulr point, R 0 = min{, }. Then the fmous Cuchy s theorem on the expnsion of n nlytic function into power series see e.g. Theorem 6.7 in [0, Prt I] gurntees tht the series 2 converges to Hl inside the circle < R 0. At this, of course, there might be issues with stbility of the recurrence process. For the stbility it cn be useful to write 2 in the form Hl = b n=0 n, where b n = b n n nd the recurrence tkes the form: P n bn = Q n bn + 2 R n bn 2. In the cse γ Z the locl Frobenius solution corresponding to the smller exponent 0 or γ my contin logrithmic fctor see e.g. [5]. So, for γ {0} Z we re looking for the solution of, stisfying Hl0 =, in the following form: Hl, q, α, β, γ, δ; = n=0, n n c n n + log 4 n=n s n n, 5 where n = γ. ote tht solution with the sought property Hl0 = could be found for ny c n. We fix c n = 0 for definiteness. Substituting 5 into we find log L s n n + L c n n + ˆ L s n n = 0, 6 n=n n=0, n n n=n where L is the opertor of the Heun eqution such tht is written s L H = 0. Besides, L ˆ ψ = 2 ψ + γ + δ + ε ψ. Obviously, 6 seprtes into two equtions L s n n = 0, 7 n=n L c n n + L ˆ s n n = 0, 8 n=0, n n n=n ow we collect in 6 terms hving identicl symptotic nture s 0. First we find tht coefficients c n for n =,..., n re submitted to the recurrence 3: P n c n = Q n c n + R n c n 2, where P n, Q n, R n re defined by 4 nd the initil conditions re c = 0, c 0 =. 3
Further we find from 7 nd 8 tht the coefficients s n for n = n +, n + 2,... re submitted to the sme recurrence reltionships 3: P n s n = Q n s n + R n s n 2, where s n = 0 nd nother initil conditions include coefficients c n, c n 2: n s n = c n [ q γε + δ ] cn 2[ + γ2 δ ε + αβ ]. At the next step we cn define coefficients c n for n = n +, n + 2,... From 8 we obtin the following reltionship: where P n c n = Q n c n + R n c n 2 + S n s n + T n s n + U n s n 2, 9 S n = γ 2n, T n = ε + δ + + γ + 2n 3, U n = 4 2n α β. In this wy for γ {0} Z, using 5 we obtin ero-exponent Frobenius solution, equl to unity t = 0. The second solution loclly cn be defined s follows see lso 7: Hs, q, α, β, γ, δ; = n=n š n n, 0 where P n š n = Q n š n + R n š n 2 for n > n nd š n =, š n = 0. As it ws mentioned bove, c n in 5 could be rbitrry. In other words, the liner combintion Hl, q, α, β, γ, δ; + C Hs, q, α, β, γ, δ; is equl to unity t = 0 for n rbitrry constnt C. In this sense, for γ {0} Z the choice of solution Hl is non-unique. Consider now the function Hs for rbitrry γ. We should distinguish two situtions: γ = nd γ. For γ we cn use the following representtion see Tble 2 in [9], index [0 ][ + ][ + ][ ]: Hs, q, α, β, γ, δ; = γ Hl, q γ ε + δ, β γ +, α γ +, 2 γ, δ;. otbly, the lter formul includes 0 s prticulr cse, justifying our wy to introduce Hl nd Hs for non-positive integer γ. For γ =, repeting the rguments used to derive representtion of Hl in the cse γ {0} Z, we cn find the following locl representtion Hs, q, α, β, γ, δ; = d n n + log t n n. 2 n= Here P n t n = Q n t n + R n t n 2, where t = 0, t 0 = nd cf. 9 P n d n = Q n d n + R n d n 2 + S n t n + T n t n + U n t n 2, d = d 0 = 0. 4 Power series expnsion t n rbitrry point Further we will extend the locl Heun functions outside the circle of convergence of the series 2, 5, 2. To void numericl integrtion of the differentil eqution we will use nlytic continution process nd the power series expnsion which is derived in this section. We seek the solution H 0,H 0,H 0, q, α, β, γ, δ; to the eqution stisfying the conditions H, q, α, β, γ, δ; 0 = H 0, n=0 H, q, α, β, γ, δ; =0 = H 0. 3 Here 0 is n rbitrry point tht is ssumed not to belong to the set {0,,, }. We will derive power series expnsion of the Heun function in the following form: H 0,H 0,H 0, q, α, β, γ, δ; = 4 c n 0 n. 4 n=0
Substituting 4 into nd collecting terms t the sme power of 0, we obtin the following 4-term recurrent reltionship defining c n : where P n c n = Q n c n + R n c n 2 + S n c n 3, 5 P n = nn 0 0 0, [γ ] Q n = n { + δ + ε + 3n [ + 4 2n γ ε δ ] } 0 + γ + n 2, R n = { n 2 [ 2γ + δ + ε + 3n 3 ] + αβ } 0 q n 2 [ + γ + n 3 + ε + δ ], S n = n 3 γ + δ + ε + n 4 + αβ. Obviously, the solution 4 stisfies the conditions 3 if the recurrence process strts with the initil conditions c = 0, c 0 = H 0, c = H 0. The series 4 converges inside the circle 0 < R, where R is the distnce to the nerest singulr point, R = min{ 0, 0, 0 }. 5 Bsic lgorithm First we consider evlution of Hl for γ {0} Z. We introduce the projection opertor P which, being pplied to n nlytic function, trunctes its power series expnsion t the point to the first terms. Using the expnsion 2, we evlute P 0 Hl = b n n, n=0 P 0 Hl = n b n n, 6 n= s pproximtion of Hl nd Hl in vicinity of = 0. In our lgorithm the number in the representtions 6 is not fixed, it will be defined s we proceed with recurrent computtion of b n = b n n nd summtion until termintion condition is stisfied. mely, we stop the process when P0 Hl nd P 0 Hl re not distinguishble in the used computer rithmetics nd b n < ɛ, where ɛ is the mchine epsilon. To estimte the qulity of the pproximtion, in view of we compute the vlue ˆ Hl = q αβ { P 0 Hl [ ] P + γ +δ +ε 0 Hl }, where P 0 Hl = n=2 nn b n n 2. Then we suppose proximity of r 0 = ˆ Hl P 0 Hl 7 to the true error of the pproximtion Hl P 0 Hl. ote tht numericl computtion of ˆ Hl ner the point = = q/αβ is unrelible due to essentil loss of significnce. It cn be suggested for vicinity of, sy, for { : q αβ < 0.0}, to use n estimte bsed on properties of the series, e.g. ˆr 0 = b + ɛ P 0 Hl. 8 We cn write the described lgorithm s function Hl 0 which returns 4-tuple Hl 0 : [f, f, r, ], where + is the number of terms in power series, defined by the termintion condition, r is the vlue computed with 7 or 8, f = P 0 Hl nd f = P 0 Hl. 5
The scheme of computtion of Hl in the cse γ {0} Z is nlogous, though bit more involved. We use the expnsion 5 nd, insted of 6, define the function Hl 0 strting from the expression c n n + log s n n. n=0, n n n=n Assume tht < κr 0, where R 0 = min{, } is the rdius of convergence of the series in 2 or 5 nd κ 0, is some coefficient chosen so tht defined by the termintion condition cn be expected to be moderte, sy κ = 0.5. Then we cn use the numericl lgorithm Hl 0 for evlution of the function Hl, its derivtive nd for estimtion of the pproximtion error. Consider further the cse κr 0. First we define n uxiliry lgorithm. Let 0 be n rbitrry point not belonging to {0,,, }. Using 4 we define P 0 H 0,H 0,H 0 = c n 0 n, n=0 P 0 H 0,H 0,H 0 = n c n 0 n. n= s pproximtions of H 0,H 0,H 0 nd H 0,H 0,H 0 for close to 0. Here coefficients c n re defined by the recurrence reltionships 5. So we proceed with recurrent computtion of c n = c n 0 n nd summtion until the termintion condition nlogous to tht described bove is stisfied. We compute Ĥ 0,H 0,H 0 = nd the vlue { P q αβ 0 H 0,H 0,H 0 [ ] P + γ + δ + ε 0 H 0,H 0,H }, 0 r 0,H 0,H 0 = Ĥ 0,H 0,H 0 P 0 H 0,H 0,H 0, 9 supposing its proximity to the true error of the pproximtion H0,H 0,H 0 P 0 H 0,H 0,H 0. In view of essentil loss of significnce in computtion of Ĥ 0,H 0,H 0, ner = we define ˆr 0,H 0,H 0 = c + ɛ P 0 H 0,H 0,H We cn write the described lgorithm s function H 0,H 0,H 0 which returns 4-tuple H 0,H 0,H 0 : [f, f, r, ], where + is the number of terms in power series defined by the termintion condition, r is the vlue computed with 9 or 20, f = P 0 H 0,H 0,H 0 nd f = P 0 H 0,H 0,H 0. ow we re in position to describe the lgorithm bsed on nlytic continution long pth from ero to. Consider first the simplest version of the lgorithm when the pth is the line segment 0,. At the first step, we compute [Hl, Hl, r, ] = Hl 0, where = e i rg κr 0 see Fig. 2. Further, for p =, 2, nd so on, we define nd compute R p = min{ p, p, p }, { p + e i rg κr p if p > κr p, p+ = if p κr p, [Hl p+, Hl p+, r p+, p+ ] = H p,hl p,hl p p+. 6
Im Re Figure 2: Anlytic continution using power series. The itertions stops when p+ =. Finlly, we hve Hl p+, Hl p+ s pproximtions of Hl nd Hl, respectively. We lso compute the vlues r Σ = r +...+r p+ nd Σ = p+ +p+. Here Σ is the totl number of power series terms which cn be used s mesure of computer lod nd r Σ my be n indictor of the pproximtion qulity. The described bove lgorithm of continution long line segment is redily generlied for the cse when 0 nd re connected by polyline Υ. This gives us wy to compute the multi-vlued Heun function. The resulting procedure cn be considered s function Hl Υ which returns 4-tuple Hl : Υ [f, f, r Σ, Σ ], where f nd f re the resulting pproximtions of the Heun function t nd its derivtive. It should be noted tht the function Hs for γ is expressed through Hl vi nd to define HsΥ through Hl Υ one should only compute the multi-vlued function γ long Υ. In the cse γ = the procedure of nlytic continution described bove for Hl cn be pplied with simple modifiction it should strt from the expnsion 2. It is esy to observe tht the sie of the step in the described nlytic continution is smll for points of the polyline Υ close to one of the singulr points. This lso mens n increse of the number of used circulr elements in the continution procedure which, in its turn, my led to loss of ccurcy. The influence of the singulr points cn be reduced by choice of the pth of continution. Let us give some detils of ppliction of the bove lgorithm for computtion of the single-vlued Heun functions. We will only use simple pths consisting of two or three line segments. We denote ζ = nd ζ 2 = if < nd ζ = nd ζ 2 = otherwise. Let R j = min{ ζ j, ζ ζ 2 } j =, 2 nd η j be the closest to ζ j point of the line segment 0, see fig. 3. ote tht ζ j η j due to the ssumption B B. Let d j = ζ j η j be the distnce from ζ j to 0,. If η j is n internl point of 0, nd d j < R j /2, then we introduce new point ς j = ζ j + exp iπ/2 + i rg min{r j /2, ζ j } signim/ζ j. In this wy we obtin the sequence of points Π, which is either [0, ] or [0, ς, ] or [0, ς 2, ] or [0, ς, ς 2, ]. Then we define the pth Υ tht consequently connects the points of Π by line segments see n exmple of three-segment pth in fig. 3 nd define Hl = Hl Υ nd Hs = HsΥ. 7
Im ζ 2 η 2 ς ς 2 η 0 ζ Re Figure 3: Pth from ero to consisting of three line segments 6 Computtion of single-vlued Heun functions ner singulr points In this section we consider computtion of single-vlued Heun functions. We hve lredy noted tht the number of circulr elements in the nlytic continution procedure becomes lrge s pproches one of the singulr points {,, }. So, we suggest n improvement of the lgorithm; for this we will compute locl solutions in vicinity of the singulr point, using results of [9] nd writing these solutions in terms of Hl nd Hs. Let be close to. We use the following representtion of the Heun function: Hl, q, α, β, γ, δ; = C Hl, αβ q, α, β, δ, γ; + C 2 Hs, αβ q, α, β, δ, γ;, 2 where C, C 2 re some constnts, the Heun functions in the right-hnd side the first nd the second locl solutions in vicinity of = correspond to the index [ ][ + ][ + ] in Tble 2 [9]. There is compliction when the point belongs to B 0,. In this cse the coefficients in 2 re generlly different for belonging to the upper nd the lower hlf-spces: C ±, C ± 2 for { : ± Im > 0}. Consider brnch cuts of Hl,... ; nd Hs,... ;. The points of the brnch cut, corresponding to B for Hl,... ; nd Hs,... ;, re defined by the eqution = s, where s, +. The set of points = + s constitutes the ry emnting from to exp{i rg } nd, thus, it is locted outside the circle of rdius with center t =. Anlogously, consider the brnch cut of Hl,... ; nd Hs,... ; corresponding to the brnch cut B. The points of the brnch cut re defined by the eqution = s, where s, +, thus, lying outside the circle of rdius with center t =. The lst possible brnch cut of Hl,... ; nd Hs,... ; is defined s = q, q, 0 nd coincides with the brnch cut B of the function Hl in the left hnd side of 2. In order to use the representtion 2 we should define the coefficients C, C 2 or, in the specil cse, C ±, C ± 2. Since for the generl Heun eqution n explicit solution to the two-point connection problem is not known, we will find the mtching coefficients in the following wy. First, we define mtching point =, preferbly being eqully close to ero nd nd distnt from =. In our lgorithm we fix { = 2 + is signim if 0,,, where s = 2 signim otherwise. Further, we pply the lgorithms Hl nd Hs described in 5 nd find [f 0, f 0, r 0, 0 ] = Hl, q, α, β, γ, δ,, [f, f, r, ] = Hl, αβ q, α, β, δ, γ,, [f 2, f 2, r 2, 2 ] = Hs, αβ q, α, β, δ, γ,. 8
Then we solve the liner system f f 2 C f f 2 = C 2 f0 f 0 nd obtin the mtching coefficients C, C 2. It my lso be resonble to keep the found vlues C = C, q, α, β, γ, δ, C 2 = C 2, q, α, β, γ, δ in computer memory. On finding C, C 2 by computtion or in the computer memory we define where Hl : [f, f, r, ], f = C f + C 2 f 2, f = C f C 2 f 2, r = C r + C 2 r 2, = + 2, [f, f, r, ] = Hl, αβ q, α, β, δ, γ,, [f 2, f 2, r 2, 2 ] = Hs, αβ q, α, β, δ, γ,. The described scheme cn be repeted literlly to define Hs bsed on the representtion Hs, q, α, β, γ, δ; = C Hl, αβ q, α, β, δ, γ; + C 2 Hs, αβ q, α, β, δ, γ;, 22 where C nd C 2 re some coefficients to be found or two sets C, C 2 nd C +, C + 2 in the specil cse 0,. We note tht finding C, C 2 or C, C 2 demnds computtion of Hl,... ; or Hs,... ;, nd both terms Hl,... ; nd Hs,... ; in the right hnd side of 2 or 22. So, if the mtching constnts re not known, the lgorithms Hl nd Hs re preferble over Hl nd Hs in sufficiently smll vicinity of =. In the code used in 7 the lgorithms re pplied for < 0.05 R R = min{, } when the mtching constnts re not known nd for < 0.25 R when the coefficients re lredy precomputed. In very similr wy we consider the cse when is locted ner. We will use the following representtion of the Heun function: Hl, q, α, β, γ, δ; = D Hl, αβ q, α, β, ε, γ; + D 2 Hs, αβ q, α, β, ε, γ;, 23 where D, D 2 re some constnts nd the two functions in the right-hnd side correspond to index [ ][ + ] in Tble 2 [9]. There is compliction when the point belongs to B or B 0. In this cse we generlly hve different coefficients in 2 in the upper nd the lower hlf-spces: D ±, D ± 2 for { : ± Im > 0}. Consider brnch cuts of Hl /,... ; ζ nd Hs /,... ; ζ, where ζ = /. The points of the brnch cut tht emntes from the singulrity ζ = / re defined in the -plne by the eqution = s, where s, +. This set of points constitutes the ry emnting from to exp{i rg } nd locted outside the circle of the rdius with center t =. The brnch cut of Hl /,... ; ζ nd Hs /,... ; ζ emnting from ζ = is ry going from ero to exp{i rg } = s; it is locted outside the circle of rdius with center t =. The third possible brnch cut of Hl /,... ; ζ nd Hs /,... ; ζ is defined s = q, q, 0 nd coincides with the brnch cut B of the function Hl,... ;. In order to find the coefficients D, D 2 or, in the specil cse, D ±, D ± 2, first, we define mtching point =, preferbly being eqully close to ero nd nd distnt from =. We fix = 2 + is 2, where s = { signim if B 0 B, signim otherwise. 9
Further, we find [f 0, f 0, r 0, 0 ] = Hl, q, α, β, γ, δ,, [f, f, r, ] = Hl, αβ q, α, β, ε, γ,, [f 2, f 2, r 2, 2 ] = Hs, αβ q, α, β, ε, γ,, nd D, D 2 re defined s solution to the liner system f f 2 D f f 2 = D 2 It my lso be resonble to keep the found vlues D = D, q, α, β, γ, δ, D 2 = D 2, q, α, β, γ, δ in computer memory. On finding D, D 2 by computtion or in the computer memory we define where Hl : [f, f, r, ], f = D f + D 2 f 2, f = D f D 2 f 2, r = D r + D 2 r 2, = + 2, [f, f, r, ] = Hl, αβ q, α, β, ε, γ,, [f 2, f 2, r 2, 2 ] = Hs, αβ q, α, β, ε, γ,. The described scheme cn be repeted literlly to define Hs bsed on the representtion f0 Hs, q, α, β, γ, δ; = D Hl, αβ q, α, β, ε, γ; + D 2 Hs f 0., αβ q, α, β, ε, γ;, where D nd D 2 or, in the specil cse, D ±, D ± 2 re some coefficients to be found. We note gin tht the lgorithms Hl nd Hs re preferble over Hl nd Hs in sufficiently smll vicinity of =. In the code used in 7 the lgorithms re pplied for < 0.05 R R = min{, } when the mtching constnts re not known nd for < 0.25 R when the coefficients re lredy precomputed. Consider now vicinity of the point =. The brnch cuts B 0, B nd B split the vicinity of infinity V = { : > mx, } into three sectors, further denoted s S, S 2, S 3. Coefficients connecting the function Hl with two locl solutions t infinity re defined for ech of the sectors seprtely. ote tht there is specil cse when is rel, then the number of sectors decreses to two. We use the following representtion of the Heun function ner = for S k k =, 2, 3: Hl, q, α, β, γ, δ; = E k α Hl + E k 2 α Hs q + αδ β, + αε β, α, α γ +, α β +, δ; q + αδ β, + αε β, α, α γ +, α β +, δ;, 24 where E k, Ek 2 re some constnts. Further we will omit the superscript for brevity. The two functions in the right-hnd side correspond to the index [ ][ + ][ + ] in Tble 2 [9]. Obviously, the brnch cuts B nd B trnsform for Hl/,..., / nd Hs/,..., / to line segments connecting ero with = nd = respectively. These brnch cuts re locted outside V. The brnch cut B 0 suits both sides of 24. To find the coefficients E, E 2, first, we define mtching point =. In our lgorithm we fix = C R e iω k, for S k, k =, 2, 3, 0
where ω k is the ngle of the men line of the sector S k, R = mx{, } nd C > C = 2 in the computtions, presented below. Then, we find [f 0, f 0, r 0, 0 ] = Hl, q, α, β, γ, δ,, [f, f, q + αδ β r, ] = Hl, + αε β, α, α γ +, α β +, δ,, [f 2, f 2, q + αδ β r 2, 2 ] = Hs, + αε β, α, α γ +, α β +, δ,, nd the mtching coefficients re defined s solution to the liner system [ ] α f [ ] α f 2 E = [ ] α f / + αf [ ] α f 2 / + αf 2 Finlly, we define function Hl returning vlues of f Hl, f Hl for sufficiently lrge. On finding E, E 2 by computtion or in the computer memory we compute where Hl : [f, f, r, ], f = E α f + E 2 α f 2, f = E α f / + αf E 2 α f 2/ + αf 2, r = E α r + E 2 α r 2, = + 2, [f, f, q + αδ β r, ] = Hl, + αε β, α, α γ +, α β +, δ,, [f 2, f 2, q + αδ β r 2, 2 ] = Hs, + αε β, α, α γ +, α β +, δ,. The scheme cn be repeted literlly to define Hs bsed on the representtion for S k Hs, q, α, β, γ, δ; = E k α Hl + E k 2 α Hs E 2 f0 q + αδ β, + αε β, α, α γ +, α β +, δ; q + αδ β, + αε β, α, α γ +, α β +, δ; where E k nd E k 2 re some coefficients to be found. We note gin tht the lgorithms Hl nd Hs re preferble over Hl nd Hs for sufficiently lrge. In the code used in the following section the lgorithms re pplied for > 5 C R when the mtching coefficients re not known nd for > C R otherwise. 7 umericl results In this section we present some results of numericl evlution of the function Hl. For this we will use the lgorithm Hl with the improvements described in the previous section Hl, Hl nd Hl. It is known tht in some cses Heun functions cn be expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions see [6, 3, 8, 6, ] nd references therein. For test of the present lgorithm we use the formul given in []: Hl 4, 94, 32, 32, 2, 2, = 2 F 2, 2, 2, 2 4 = h := where 2 F is the ordinry hypergeometric function. We define := Hl 4, 94, 32, 32, 2, 2, 2 4 f 0 2 4,.,
