1 THE SCHOOL BOARD OF BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT ROBERT W. RUNCIE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS August 15, 2018 Signatures on file TO: FROM: VIA: SUBJECT: School Board Members Leslie M. Brown Chief Portfolio Services Officer Robert W. Runcie Superintendent of Schools FIRST DAY ENROLLMENT COUNT The first day total enrollment count at all Broward County Public Schools, including charters, reported 271,244 students registered in TERMS, the District s student database. This is a difference of 1,568 (-0.6%) fewer students from the total number of students registered in TERMS on the second day of school last year, August 22, For the 2017/18 school year only, the official first day enrollment count was conducted on the second day of school due to the solar eclipse on the actual first day of school, August 21, 2017, being designated as an excused absence. In addition, this school year s earlier start date as well as the mid-week may have contributed to the apparent difference in enrollment, and this will continue to fluctuate as students continue to register for school during the first several days of the school year. This year at District innovative schools, the enrollment count for the first day of school at all prekindergarten through twelfth grade schools and centers, not including charter schools, was 225,904. This number represents an enrollment difference of 2,274 fewer students as compared to the total number of students registered in TERMS on the second day of school last year. This year at charter schools, the enrollment count for the first day of school was 45,340, an enrollment increase of 706 from last year s second day count of 44,634. One new charter school opened for the school year, while five closed and another two consolidated since the first day of the 2017/18 school year. Historical and Current Enrollment in TERMS by School Level Year PreK Elementary Middle High Centers PreK-12 & District & Charters Center Total Charter Total 2016/17 5,173 96,960 48,232 70,958 4, ,223 44, , /18 5,569 96,519 49,366 71,612 5, ,178 44, ,812 5,973 94,773 49,741 71,084 4, ,904 45, ,244 The first day TERMS enrollment count is a good predictor of the District s official benchmark date enrollment, historically being about 99% of that enrollment count. Last year the total number of students at District innovative and charter schools registered in TERMS on the second day of school was equal to 100.5% percent of the enrollment at the benchmark date. This year, the first day enrollment for all District innovative and charter schools

2 FIRST DAY ENROLLMENT COUNT August 15, 2018 Page 2 of 2 is equal to % of the 271,162 students projected to be enrolled on the benchmark date, September 11, Attached to this memorandum is the Enrollment Count for each school, center, and charter school by grade level. The data supplied is not currently disaggregated for race, ethnicity, English Language Learners (ELL), Exceptional Student Education (ESE), or Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL). This disaggregated data will be available with the official benchmark day enrollment report the week of September 11, If you need additional information, please contact Patrick J.
