3 Top Mathematics Top for the mathematics studied in grade provides sets of exercises designed to challenge students to demonstrate mastery of the number and computation strands of the mathematics program. Speed and accuracy in computation helps students to work efficiently and effectively with many reasoning and problem-solving explorations in mathematics. Top provides six sets of similar exercises for students to complete each quarter of the school year. Each set of exercises is designed for student self-assessment of computational mastery and is not intended for a teacherassigned grade. These exercises become more challenging each quarter as the student navigates through the year s mathematics learning experiences. Top is based on the expectations outlined in the Fairfax County Public Schools Program of Studies for mathematics and the Virginia Standards of Learning for mathematics. Each student is encouraged to set a personal goal for computational speed and accuracy without the aid of a calculator.
