Dedution of Lorentz Transformation from the eistene of absolute rest. Dedution of the speed of light in any frame of referene. Rodrigo de Abreu Centro de Eletrodinâmia e Departamento de Físia do IST Abstrat We begin by admitting the following: arxi:physis/3 5 Ot There is a frame of referene where the speed of light is the same in any diretion that speed is. The aerage speed of light on a two-way journey is in eery frame of referene. From this two premises we obtain an epression for the speed of light whih implies the speed of light depends on the motion of the frame of referene. Also from this two premises solely we dedut Lorentz Transformation. Introdution Eperiene suggests that, when a ray of light is emitted towards a mirror and then refleted bak to its point of origin, its aerage speed (the total distane diided by the total time) for the two-way journey is in eery frame of referene. We ll assume this is in fat so. Also we ll assume the eistene of a frame of referene where the speed of light has the alue in eery diretion we will assume light always moes with speed on this frame independently of the state of motion of the emitting body. Obiously if the speed of light is in eery diretion in a gien frame of referene, then the two-way aerage speed will also be in that frame. Yet, the two-way aerage speed being in a gien frame, doesn t imply light traels with speed on both parts of the journey in that frame. So, while we assume the two-way aerage speed of light is in eery frame, only for one frame do we assume the true speed of light is we all this the resting frame. The speed of light being in eery diretion in the resting frame means that if we simultaneously emit two rays of light in opposite diretions they will trael the same distane in the same time in this frame. So, if we plae two loks at any two points at the same distane from the origin of the rays of light and if eah ray of light is emitted towards a lok, then we an be sure the rays will reah the loks simultaneously. In other words, we an safely use Einstein s method of synhronization [] to synhronize all the loks fied on this frame of referene. On the other hand, for all frames eept the resting one, we re not sure what the speed of light on a one-way journey is. Notie that while the speed of light may be independent of the state of motion of the emitting body, its alue doesn t hae to be in eery frame of referene. We assume the speed of light must hae onstant alue for eery frame, but that alue may hange from one frame to other.
Therefore by using Einstein s method of synhronization, we an t be sure to synhronize the loks of any frame eept the resting one. We ll net show that our premises are not only suffiient in order to obtain Lorentz Transformation, but also that they are inonsistent with the stronger premise that the speed of light is the same in eery frame of referene []. Lorentz Transformation obtained from absolute motion Suppose the eistene of a frame of referene S where the speed of light is in any diretion. Consider also a seond frame of referene S' moing with eloity related to S for simpliity s sake S only moes along the -ais. We impose yy' and zz' for eery t (sine they are perpendiular to the motion of S, the y -ais and the z -ais do not ontrat). We ll suppose the loks of S are already synhronized between eah other by Einstein s method we an assume this, sine we know the speed of light in S is in any diretion. We ll suppose that when the loks of S mark the instant t, all the loks of S' fied at ' also mark the instant t'. We ll also assume that when t the origin of S' oinides with the origin of S. Now, suppose that by the moment the origin of S' passes on the origin of S (at t), a ray of light is emitted from that point along the positie diretion of the y'-ais. Sine S' is only moing along the -ais and this ray of light moes along the y'-ais and beause we admit the two-way speed is always, then we an onlude by symmetry that the one-way speed of this partiular ray of light is also in S'. Yet we admit the one-way speed of the ray of light is also in S, so we must onlude the loks of S' are running slower. When we relate the moement of the ray of light in both frames of referene, we obtain the following relations between t and t :. t t + t () Therefore, from () we hae t t ' () This onlusion an be briefly eplained by the following: Suppose the ray of light was refleted by a mirror fied anywhere on the y -ais - the ray would return to the origin. Sine the ray moes parallel to the y -ais, if we look at that two-way journey from the point of iew of S, we will onlude both parts of the journey hae the same distane in S. This means both parts of the journey take the same time to be ompleted in S sine light always moes with speed in this frame. But if this is so, then while it might take longer to omplete eah part of the journey in S then in S, the time of both parts must also be the same in S and so must the speed of light. Sine the aerage speed of the total journey is, eah one-way journey must also be. Of ourse this onlusion is only true beause the light is moing parallel to the y -ais.
Suppose that, also at t, a seond ray of light is emitted from the oiniding origins towards a mirror fied on the -ais on the point ('', y ', z' ). Sine the speed of light is in S and the eloity of S' is in S, we hae the following equations for the position of the ray of light (3) and the mirror (4) in the frame of referene S: + t (3) t (4) From (3) and (4) we obtain the time t required for the light to trael from the oiniding origins to the mirror: t t (5) We an, from a similar analysis, determine the time t needed for the light to trael bak from the mirror to the origin of S'. That time is: t + (6) From (5) and (6) we hae the total time of the two-way journey: t + t + + Or (7) t + t (8) ( ) Suppose the first ray of light, emitted along the y'-ais, is also refleted by a mirror fied on this ais at the same distane from the origin (', y' ', z'). Sine the speed of this ray is, if t' is the time the light takes to reah the mirror on the y'-ais, then t' is also the time for the light to return to the origin. Sine the total distane of eah two-way journey of the two rays of light is the same in S' and sine the aerage twoway speed of both rays of light is, then the two rays of light take the same time to omplete the journey. We hae the following relation: t' t + t (9) ( )
And we hae also: ' t' () or ' t' () From (9) and () we obtain: () ' From () we see that the distane of the mirror fied on the '-ais from the oiniding origins is larger if measured in S' then it is in S. We onlude that the '-ais is ontrated. Sine we know the relation between the time of S and S' () we an immediately obtain the time the light takes to reah the mirror fied on the '-ais (3) and the time the light takes to return to the origin of S' (4). From (), (5) and (6) we hae: t ( ) ' (3) and t' ( + ) (4) From (), (3) and (4) we obtain the speed of light as it traels towards the mirror (5) and the speed of light as it traels in the opposite diretion (6). We an see they are different: ' ' (5) t' ( ) and
' ' + t' (6) ( ) Finally we obtain the Lorentz Transformation. From () and () we hae: (7) t ' or ' t (8) Sine ' t' t t t (9) We hae: t' t () Conlusion We e shown that while the aerage speed of light on a two-way journey may be in eery frame of referene, the speed of light hanges aordingly to the absolute motion of the frame it is measured in. The speed of light an only be onstant in a single frame of referene. This implies absolute rest. We e also shown that the eistene of absolute rest, doesn t imply Lorentz transformation is not true. We e deried Lorentz transformation from the same premises that lead us to the onlusion that the speed of light is not a onstant. This shows Lorentz Transformation an and must be physially interpreted in the ontet of absolute motion [].
