Our result shows that in such systems the Zitterbewegung like term related to a trembling motion of the quasi-article, always aears in the osition oerator. Moreover, the Zitterbewegung is, in general, a multi-frequency oscillatory motion of the quasi-article. We derive a few different exressions for the amlitude of the oscillatory motion including that related to the Berry connection matrix. We resent several examles to demonstrate how general and versatile our result is. PACS numbers: w,71.70.Ej,73..Pr,03.65.Vf Schrödinger in his original aer has redicted a trembling or in other words a raid oscillatory motion of the center of the free wave acket for relativistic electron [1]. However, the Zitterbewegung is not strictly a relativistic effect [ 6] but can be observed in sintronic systems as well [7]. This work has initiated many other works [8 3] with an aim to demonstrate the aearance of the Zitterbewegung not only for relativistic Dirac electrons. In these works a common feature is that the oscillatory motion of the free articles can be described only by one frequency. In our revious work we showed that for a wide class of Hamiltonians related to for examle sintronic systems and grahene, the Zitterbewegung can be treated in a unified way [33]. Here the basic idea was that the Hamiltonian of several systems can be maed to that modelling the recession of a virtual sin in an effective magnetic field. The couled equations for this virtual sin recession and the orbital motion of the quasi-article can easily be solved. Thus, the Zitterbewegung is arising because the virtual sin and the orbital motion for the quasi-article are couled. Our work suggests as natural question whether the henomenon of the Zitterbewegung also arises for an even more general Hamiltonian. In the resent work we extend the Zitterbewegung henomena to a broader class of quantum Hamiltonians for free (quasi-) articles. In articularly, we derive a general and simle exression for the time-deendence of the osition oerator x(t) for a multi-band Hamiltonian given by H 11 () H 1 ()... H 1n () H 1 () H ()... H n () H = , (1) H n1 () H n ()... H nn () where each matrix element is a differentiable function of the momentum of the article itself and n is the number of degrees of freedom of the system. From our general exression for the osition oerator x(t) we shall show that i) the Zitterbewegung always aears for systems given by the Hamiltonian (1), i) for n > the Zitterbewegung is in fact a multi-comonent oscillatory motion of the free quasi-article, ii) for n = we recover the results obtained earlier in the above mentioned references. To find the time deendence of the osition oerator x(t) of the quasi-article in Heisenberg icture one needs to calculate x(t) = e i Ht x(0)e i Ht, () where x(0) is the osition oerator at t = 0, ie, it equals to the osition oerator in Schrödinger icture. Because the momentum oerator is a constant of motion we now work in the subsace of the Hilbert sace for which the momentum is fixed. Calculating the right hand side of equation () the crucial ste is to decomose the Hamiltonian (1) into a sum of rojection oerators: H = a E aq a, where E a is the ath eigenvalue of the Hamilton oerator at a given momentum, and Q a are rojection oerators satisfying the following relations: Q a Q b = δ ab Q a and a Q a = I n, where I n is the n n unit matrix. The osition oerator at time t = 0 in Schrödinger icture
and in momentum reresentation is x(0) = i. Consider the oerator U = e i Ht which is only a function of the momentum oerator. Then equation () can be rewritten as x(t) = U 1 x(0)u = U 1 [x(0),u ]+U 1 U x(0) 1 U = x(0)+i U, (3) where we have made use the relation [x(0),f()] = i F(). Decomosition of the Hamiltonian (1) into a sum of rojection oerators makes ossible to write that e ± i Ht = a e± i Eat Q a. Now, substituting these oerators into equation (3) and using the orthogonality relations Q a Q b = δ ab Q a it yields the time deendence of the osition oerator: x(t) = x(0)+ Z aa +t V a Q a + a a + e iω ab t Z ab, where a b a V a () = E a(), Z ab() = i Q a, (4a) (4b) and ω ab = Ea E b are the so-called beating frequencies. Here we call V a as artial velocities and Z ab as Zitterbewegung amlitudes. This is our central result in this work. The interretation of the different terms in (4) is as follows. The first term is the initial osition of the quasi-article. In contrastto the usual dynamics (forsystems with onedegreeoffreedom), the secondand the fourth term areentirely new. The second term is a dislacement of the osition oerator indeendent of time. The third term describes the motion of the quasi-article with constant velocity which is, in general, not equal to any of the artial velocities V a. Finally, the Zitterbewegung stems from the last, oscillatory term which describes the oscillatory motion of the quasi-article. The henomenon of Zitterbewegung is similar to the beating effect with different frequencies in the classical wave mechanics. The Zitterbewegung is a direct consequence of the couling of different energy eigenstates for systems with more than one degree of freedom. These terms in x(t) are inherent of the Zitterbewegung and are exressed via the rojection oerator Q a related to the given Hamiltonian. Equation (4) is the most general form for describing the henomenon of the Zitterbewegung. Our result shows exlicitly that the oscillatory motion (the last term in equation (4a)) is a suerosition of individual oscillatory motions with frequencies corresonding to all ossible differences of the energy eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian (1). Thus in the most general case the Zitterbewegung describes a multi-frequency oscillatory motion of the quasi-article. This multi-frequency behavior of the Zitterbewegung has first been shown by Winkler et al. in Ref. 19 for two secific systems, namely for the Kane modell and Landau-Rashba Hamiltonian. However, the most clear manifestation of this multi-frequency behavior of the Zitterbewegung for the general Hamiltonian (1) can be seen only in our main result (4). In general, the Zitterbewegung cannot be described by only one frequency (this is the case only for systems with two different eigenenergies) but all of the differences between the different energy eigenvalues corresonding to the beating frequencies aear in the time deendence of the osition oerator. Sometimes in the exlicit calculation of the osition oerator x(t) it is more useful to use a different form for the Zitterbewegung amlitudes Z ab given by (4). Taking the derivative of the Hamilton oerator H = c E cq c and the orthogonality relation Q c Q b = δ cb Q b with resect to the momentum one can easily show that (for details see Sec. A in the Aendix) Z ab = i Q a H Q b E b E a, (5) valid for a b. Thus in the calculation of the Zitterbewegung amlitudes instead of knowing the derivative of the rojection oerators with resect to the momentum one needs to take only the derivative of the Hamiltonian. Another form of the osition oerator x(t) is given in the Aendix. We now consider several examles to demonstrate how versatile our result is to study different systems known in the literature (for more details see the Aendix). Regarding the Zitterbewegung most of the systems studied in the literature are described by a Hamiltonian with only two different eigenvalues [1 33]. In such systems either the Hamiltonian itself is a matrix or the dimension of the Hilbert sace is more than but the eigenvalues are degenerate and the Hamiltonian has only two different eigenvalues. Thus for such systems it is useful to derive an
alternative form for the time deendence of the osition oerator given by Eq. (4). Now the Hamiltonian in terms of rojectors reads H = E + Q + +E Q, where Q ± are the rojection oerators satisfying the usual relations mentioned above and E ± are the two eigenvalues of H. Introducing the oerator T = Q + Q it is obvious that T = I. Note that in the mathematical literature the oerators satisfying this relation are called involutary oerator related to the mirror image in geometry. The Hamiltonian can be rewritten as H = εi + ( ω/)t, where ε = (E + + E )/ and ω = (E + E )/. Moreover, it is clear that Q ± = (I ±T)/. Then using Eq. (4) one can easily show that x(t) = x(0)+wt+z(t), where W = ε I + 1 ω T, Z(t) = sin(ωt) + i (1 cos(ωt))t. From this result it is clear that in the oscillatory art of x(t) there is only one frequency comonent. Equation (6) can easily be alied to the original Schrödinger s Zitterbewegung and we find the same results as that by Schrödinger (see Sec. B of the Aendix). Another examle is the Luttinger Hamiltonian [34, 35] given by H = 1 m [( γ γ 3 (6a) (6b) (6c) ] ) γ (S), (7) where = ( x, y, z ) is the vector of the momentum oerators, S = (S x,s y,s z ) reresents the sin oerator with sin 3/, m and γ 1, are arameters of the model. Using Eq. (6) the osition oerator for Luttinger Hamiltonian can easily be derived (for more details see Sec. C of the Aendix): x(t) = x(0)+ ( γ1 + 5 γ m I 4 γ m ) (S) t+sin(ωt) ( (S) 4 ) S(S)+(S)S +(1 cos(ωt)) ( S) (S) +(S)( S) (S)+(S) ( S) 4 4, (8) where ω = E + E = (γ /m). Note that this result agrees with that obtained by Winkler et al. in Ref. 19, and by J. Schliemann in a rivate communication using a direct calculation of the right hand side of equation (). We also consider a non-trivial examle for the Zitterbewegung not known in the literature, namely the Zitterbewegung for bilayer grahene. The Hamiltonian for bilayer grahene in the four by four reresentation is given in Refs. [36, 37]. Including the trigonal waring [37 39] the osition oerator x(t) is more cumbersome but its structure and the stes of the derivation are similar to the case when the trigonal waring is omitted. Therefore, we now neglect the trigonal waring. The osition oerator x(t) can be derived using Eq. (4) but to obtain the Zitterbewegung amlitudes it is more effective to use Eq. (5). The results is quite lengthy thus here we only refer to Sec. E of the Aendix. This is a non-trivial examle for the Zitterbewegung. Since the Hamilton oerator for bilayer grahene has four different eigenvalues, we have six values of the energy differences. However out of these six values there are only four different ones. Therefore, the number of beating frequencies is only four. In this examle it is clear that the oscillatory motion of the electron is a suerosition of individual oscillatory motions with four different frequencies. Recently, for secific systems the connection between the Zitterbewegung and the Berry hase has been noticed and investigated by Vaishnav and Clark [3], and Englman and Vértesi [8]. We now show that the oscillatory terms, ie, the Zitterbewegung amlitudes in the osition oerator have a close relation to the Berry connection matrix aearing in the exression of the well-known Berry hase [40] even for a general Hamiltonian (1). To this end we resent another form for osition oerator in terms of the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian. The rojection oerator can be exressed via the eigenvectors u a,s () of the Hamiltonian oerator: Q a () = s u a,s() u a,s (), where s denotes the different eigenvectors in a subsace with the same energy eigenvalue E a. Then equation (4) can be rewritten as x(t) = x(0)+t k V k u k () u k () ( e iω lk t 1 ) A kl () u k () u l (), (9a) + k,l A kl () = i u k () u l(). (9b)
Here A kl is the so-called Berry connection matrix. The index k labels the eigenvectorsof the Hamiltonian with taking into account their multilicity. For systems with recessing sin in an effective magnetic field it turns out that to study the Zitterbewegung Eq. (9) is more aroriate than Eq. (4). This is demonstrated in Sec. D of the Aendix, where we find the same result for the osition oerator as that we derived before using a different aroach [33]. So far we concentrate on the structure of the Zitterbewegung for general Hamiltonian (1). However, the observation of the Zitterbewegung exerimentally is more difficult roblem. It is well-known that the satial size of the trembling motion of the relativistic electron redicted by Schrödinger is of the order of Comton wavelength, and its frequency is far beyond the resent exerimental ossibilities [1]. The exerimental observation of the Zitterbewegung in the non-relativistic quantum regime such as in semiconductors with sin-orbit coulings [7] is much more romising. For examle, Vaishnav and Clark [3], and Merkl et al. [31] have roosed an exeriment for observing Zitterbewegung using ultra cold atoms, while Rusin and Zawadzki have roosed an exeriment for observing Zitterbewegung robed by femtosecond laser ulses in grahene [3]. Very recently, Gerritsma et al. have erformed a quantum simulation of the Dirac equation using a single traed ion and observed the Zitterbewegung [41]. One of the difficulty of observing the Zitterbewegung is the lack of time resolved robes. The initial state, in general, is a suerosition of different momentum-eigenstates: Ψ 0 = d 3 k c k() u k (). Therefore, the exectation value is x(t) = Ψ 0 x(t) Ψ 0 = d 3 k,l c k ()c l() u k () x(t) u l () which involves the integration over the momentum. Since in Eq. (4) the beating frequencies ω kl () deend on the momentum the integration over the momentum in x(t) may result in a strong suression of the Zitterbewegung in time. This roblem can be circumvented if at least one beating frequency is indeendent of the momentum of the quasi-article. This is the case, for examle, for bilayer grahene as shown in Sec. E of the Aendix. One beating frequency is constant and in the detectable regime ω = γ 1 / 0.6fs 1, where γ ev is the strongest interlayer couling between two carbon atoms that are on the to of each other [36, 37, 37 39]. The amlitudes of the trembling motion will be investigated in the near future. Our main aim in this aer is to establish a general theory for the Zitterbewegung. On the other hand our general theory can be a good starting oint to search for systems that are realistic for exerimental observation of the Zitterbewegung. Conclusions. We resented a general theory for Zitterbewegung and derived a general and simle exression for the osition oerator x(t) in Heisenberg icture and in momentum reresentation, and for a given system it can easily be calculated. In contrast to systems studied in the literature [1 5, 7 16, 19 33] the Zitterbewegung is a universal henomenon and it always aears in the quantum dynamics of a system of quasi-article with more than one degree of freedom. Our main result (4) shows that the Zitterbewegung, in general, is a multi-frequency beating effect in Heisenberg icture and has a close relation to the Berry connection. We believe that our work resented here rovides a better understanding and exerimental guide for the Zitterbewegung studied intensively in the literature. APPENDIX We now aly our main result given in the main text for Zitterbewegung to several systems known in the literature and also calculate the oerator x(t) for non-trivial systems reviously not studied in the context of Zitterbewegung. Below we also resent the details of the derivation of the results mentioned in the main text. Our examles show how owerful our general exressions (4) or (9) are for studying the henomenon of Zitterwbewegung. A. Other equivalent forms for the osition oerator In this section we resent the derivation of the result given by Eq. (5) for the osition oerator x(t). Using the relation i a b Q a = 0 following from b Q b = I n, Eq. (4) can easily be rewritten as x(t) x(0) = t a E a Q a +i ( e iω ab t 1 ) Q a. (10) a,b We now resent another form for the Zitterbewegung amlitudes Z ab given by Eq. (4). Taking the derivative of the Hamilton oerator H = c E cq c with resect to the momentum we have H = c Similarly, from the orthogonality relation Q c Q b = δ cb Q b we find that ( ) Ec Q Q c c +E c. (11) Q c Q b +Q c = δ cb. (1) Thus using Eqs. (11) and (1) for a given a and b we may write: H Q a Q b = ( ) Ec Q Q c aq c Q b +E c Q a Q b = E b Q aq b + c c ( ) E c Q a δ cb Q c = δ ab E a Q a +(E b E a ) Q a, (13)
6 where we have made used of the orthogonality relations Q a Q b = δ ab Q a. Hence we find that for a b H Q b Q a = Q a. (14) E b E a Now from this relation it is simle to obtain the alternative exression for the Zitterbewegung amlitudes given by Eq. (5). To get deeer insight into the henomenon of the Zitterbewegung it is useful to resent another form for the time deendent oerator x(t). For the given index a and b in Eq. (10) we now introduce the oerator T ab = Q a Q b. Then it follows that Tab = Q a +Q b and Tab 3 = T ab. The oerators satisfying the latter equation are called weak involutary oerators. It is obvious that an involutary oerator is always( a weak involutary ) oerator. ( Note) also that T ba = T ab. From the definition of the oerator T ab we find that Q a = 1 T ab +T ab and Qb = 1 T ab T ab. We now exress the second and third terms in Eq. (10) in terms of the oerator T ab. Then one can easily show that ω ab T ab = a E a I n +n a a,b E a Q a, (15) Q a +Q Q a b = 1 ab T ab T ab, (16) Q a Q b Q a = 1 T ab ab T ab, (17) where I n is the n n unit matrix. Then it is easy to rewrite Eq. (10) as x(t) = x(0)+wt+ i ab [i sin(ω ab t)+ T ab cos(ω ab t)] T ab 4 T ab, = x(0)+wt+ i 4 W = 1 n a E a a a,b I n + 1 n b a ( e iω ab T ab t 1 ) ab T ab, where a,b ω ab T ab. In our general case, when there are more than one frequency comonent in the oscillatory term owing to the fact that the system has more than two different energy levels, the time deendent form of the oscillatory term has the same exonential form between the corresonding energy levels as in Schrödinger s case (see the next section of the Aendix). In summary, Eqs. (10) and (18) are the two alternative forms of our main result (4) for the osition oerator. (18a) (18b) (18c) B. Revisiting Schrödinger s original derivation Our exression given by Eq. (6) can directly be used to study the Zitterbewegung for free electron described by the Dirac equation. This roblem was originally examined by Schrödinger [1]. The Dirac Hamiltonian reads H = cα+mc β, (19) where α and β are the usual 4 4 matrices satisfying the relations α 1 = α = α 3 = β = 1, α i β + βα i = 0 and α i α k +α k α i = δ ik. One can show that H = E, where E = c +(mc ). Introducing the oerator T = H/E it is clear that T is an involutory oerator since T = H /E = I, where I is a four by four unit matrix. Then the Hamiltonian can be written as H = ω T. Thus, from Eq. (6) the time deendence of the osition oerator is x(t) = x(0)+ ω T t+ We need to evaluate the gradient of ω and T with resect to : sin(ωt) + (cos(ωt) 1) T i. (0) ω = E = c E VT, where V = c H 1, (1) = (H/E) = v V, where v = cα. () E
Here V is the classical relativistic velocity of the article with momentum and energy H. Then x(t) becomes x(t) = x(0)+vt+ v V sin(ωt) E + v V (cos(ωt) 1) T i E e ih t I = x(0)+vt+i (v V). (3) H This results agrees with that given by Schrödinger in his original work [1] on the Zitterbewegung of the relativistic free electron. 7 C. Luttinger Hamiltonian We now resent a non-trivial examle for calculating the Zitterbewegung in case of Luttinger Hamiltonian given by H = 1 [( γ ] m γ ) γ (S), (4) where = ( x, y, z ) is the vector of the momentum oerators and S = (S x,s y,s z ) reresents the sin oerator with sin 3/, while m and γ 1, are arameters of the model [34, 35] (in this section we take = 1). The Hamiltonian can be exressed in terms of the rojection oerators Q L and Q H as [35] H = E H ()Q H ()+E L ()Q L (), where (5) Q L () = 9 8 I 4 1 (S), (6) Q H () = I 4 Q L (), (7) and I 4 is the 4 4 unit matrix, and the double degenerate eigenvalues are E L () = γ1+γ m and E H () = γ1 γ m corresonding to the light-hole (L) and the heavy-hole (H) bands. The rojection oerators Q L and Q H satisfy the usual orthogonality relations. To find the time deendence of the osition oerator we use Eq.(6) valid for Hamiltonian with two eigenvalues. Take Q L = Q + and Q H = Q then we find T = Q + Q = 5 4 I 4 (S), ε = E++E Furthermore, we need the derivative of T with resect to : Now the time deendence of the osition oerator reads where W and Z(t) can easily be obtained from Eq. (6): W = γ γ m Z(t) = 1 I 4 γ m = γ1 m and ω = E + E = γ m. = (S) 4 S(S)+(S)S. (8) (S) x(t) = x(0)+wt+z(t), (9), (30) sin(ωt) i 4 4 (cos(ωt) 1) [ (S) S(S) (S)S(S) +(S) 3 S S(S) 3]. (31) The exression Z(t) can be further simlified using the following identity for the sin oerators (can be roven using the commutation relations [S j,s k ] = iε jkl S l ): S(S) (S)S = i S. (3) Finally, the osition oerator (9) for Luttinger Hamiltonian can be written as ( γ1 + 5 x(t) = x(0)+ γ ) ( ) I 4 γ (S) (S) m m t+sin(ωt) 4 S(S)+(S)S +(1 cos(ωt)) ( S) (S) +(S)( S) (S)+(S) ( S) 4 4. (33) Note that this result agrees with that obtained by Winkler et al. in Ref. [19], and by J. Schliemann in a rivate communication using a direct calculation of the right hand side of Eq. ().
8 D. Sin in an effective magnetic field In this section we consider the Zitterbewegung for systems maed to a system of virtual sin in an effective magnetic field. Such classes of Hamiltonian have been reviously studied by the resent authors in Ref. [33] using a different aroach. For many systems [5, 7 16, 19 33] the Hamiltonian can be written in a quite general form: H = ε()i +Ω()S, (34) where I is the unit matrix in sin sace, and the system is characterized by the one-article energy disersion ε() and the effective magnetic field Ω() couled to a virtual sin S with magnitude S. Here we assume that ε() and Ω() are differentiable functions of the momentum = ( x, y, z ). In Ref. [33] we listed a few systems (together with the effective magnetic field Ω()) that are currently intensely studied in sintronics, and in the research of grahene and suerconductors. To find oerator x(t) for S = 1/ one can use our result given by Eq. (6), however for S 1/ the derivation is more subtle. We now highlight the main stes in this calculation for the case of S 1/. Now it is more aroriate to start from the alternative form for x(t) given in the main text by Eq. (9) that involves the Berry connection matrix. Solving the eigenvalue roblem for Hamiltonian (34) we find that the eigen-energies are E m = ε() + Ωm, where Ω = Ω and m = S, S +1,...,S 1,S labels the eigenvectors m of H which are the same as the eigenvectors of oerator S z, the comonent of the sin oerator S with sin quantization axis z ointing along vector Ω. In what follows, it is useful to introduce the unit vector n = Ω/Ω. Then (ns 0 ) m = m m, where S 0 is the sin oerator S in Schrödinger icture, ie, it is time indeendent. The Hamilton oerator becomes H = m=s m= S E m m m. In the second term of Eq. (9a) the velocity oerator W = k V k u k u k can be obtained as W = m=s m= S E m m m = ε m=s m= S m m + Ω m=s m= S m m m = ε I + Ω (ns 0), (35) where we have made use of the fact that the eigenvectors m form a comlete set. Similarly, we can calculate the Berry connection matrix A mn in Eq. (9b). Using the general relation m n = m H n E n E m, m m, (36) the mn matrix element of the jth comonent of the vector oerator A can be exressed as i (A j ) mn = E n E m l=1,,3 K jl m S l n, (37) valid for m n and where the matrix K is defined as K jk = Ω k / j. Then emloying the well-known relations between the sin oerators S x,s y and S z, one can evaluate the matrix elements of the sin oerator S j in the above equation. After some algebra the time deendence of the osition oerator becomes x(t) = x(0)+wt+z(t), where (38) W = ε I + Ω (ns 0), (39) Z(t) = sinωt Ω K(I n n) S cosωt K(n S 0 ), (40) Ω and n n denotes the outer or direct roduct, ie, (n n) jk = n j n k. Note that this result agrees exactly with that derived with a different method in our revious ublication[33]. E. Bilayer grahene without trigonal waring We now resent a non-trivial examle not known in the literature, namely the bilayer grahene system. In this case we show that the oscillatory motion of the electron is a suerosition of individual oscillatory motions with four different frequencies.
The Hamiltonian for bilayer grahene in the four by four reresentation reads [36, 37] v H = 0 0 v v 0 γ 1 v + 0 γ 1 0, (41) where ± = x ±i y (note that + = x + y = ). To have a result indeendent from the choice of the coordinate systemsit is convenienttointroduce the vector = ( x, y,0). Herev = 3aγ 0 /( ), whereais the lattice constantin the honeycomb lattice, γ 0 is the intralayer couling between nearest neighbor carbon atoms, while γ 1 is the strongest interlayer couling between two carbon atoms that are on the to of each other. In the above Hamiltonian we neglect the trigonal waring [37 39] since the other interlayer coulings are much smaller than γ 1. We have also calculated the time deendence of the osition oerator when the trigonal waring term is included. In this case the result is more cumbersome (not resented here) but the structure of the osition oerator and the stes of its derivation are similar to that resented below when the trigonal waring is omitted. Therefore, for the sake of simlicity we now only consider the bilayer grahene without trigonal waring. In what follows it is convenient to work with dimensionless Hamiltonian. Thus we re-scale the momentum and the Hamilton oerators as ± = v ± /γ 1, and H = H/γ 1, and then the Hamiltonian takes the following form (we omit the tilde): H = (4) To calculate the time deendence of the oerator x(t) we shall use Eq. (4). After some matrix algebra we found the following result for the decomosition of the Hamilton oerator (4) into a sum of rojection oerators: H = 4 a=1 E aq a, where 9 E 1 = Ω 1, E = Ω+1, E 3 = Ω 1, E 4 = Ω+1, Ω = 1+ + = 1+, (43) Q 1 = I 4 R R = I 4 +T 0 e iϕ 0 0 e iϕ , Q = I 4 +R I 4 T, Q 3 = I 4 R 1 0 0, T = Ω I 4 T, Q 4 = I 4 +R I 4 +T, (44), and ± = e ±iϕ, (45) and I 4 is the 4 4 unit matrix. One can easily show that R = T = I 4, ie, both R and T are involutory oerators. Similarly, R and T commute with each other, ie, [R,T] = 0, and the four oerators Q 1,...,Q 4 are indeed rojection oerators satisfying the usual relations: Q a Q b = δ ab Q a and 4 a=1 Q a = I 4. One can also show by direct calculation that H = 4 a=1 E aq a holds. We now can use Eq. (4) or (10) to find time deendence of the osition oerator. Note that to obtain the exlicit form of the Zitterbewegung amlitudes it is more useful to aly Eq. (5) since it is trivial to calculate the derivative of the Hamiltonian (4) with resect to the momentum oerator. After a tedious but straightforward calculation we have x(t) = x(0)+wt+z(t), where (46) E i W = Q i = Ω RT = Ω RT = + 0 Ω + 0, (47) i=
and β 0 β 0 Z(t) = e 0 β 0 β + 4Ω (cos(αt) 1) β + 0 +isin(αt) 0 0 β 0 α 0 α 0 0 α 0 α + + (cos(βt) 1) α + 0 +isin(βt) 0 0 α β 0 β β + 0 β β 0 β α 0 α α + 0 α α 0 α (cos(t) 1) + 0 +isin(t) Ω i Ω Ω 3 (cos(ωt) 1) +i sin(ωt) Ω , (48) 0 Ω where e = (0,0,1), α = Ω 1, β = Ω+1 and t is in units of /γ 1. One can easily see that the above oerator x(t) is a hermitian oerator. The vector e = ( y, x,0) is erendicular to the momentum vector = ( x, y,0). Therefore, the oerator x(t) has one longitudinal and three transversal modes arallel and erendiclar to the momentum, resectively. It is clear from the result that the oscillatory term Z(t) corresonding to Zitterbewegung is a sum of individual oscillatory terms with four different frequencies.
