Extended discrete KP hierarchy and its disersionless limit ANDREI K. SVININ Institute of System Dynamics and Control Theory, Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, P.O. Box 1233, Iruts, Russia arxiv:nlin/ v2 [nlin.si] 15 Jul 2004 Abstract. We exhibit the disersionless limit of the extended discrete KP hierarchy. Keywords: discrete KP hierarchy, disersionless limit 1. Introduction There are many activities concerning with disersionless hierarchies. The interest to these hierarchies comes, in articular, from string theory and related areas (see, for examle [1], [2], [3]). Of course, one can also mention many other interesting themes lie the study of the system of hydrodynamic tye [4], the theory of conformal mas [5], [6] etc. This letter is designed to resent the extension of the disersionless discrete KP hierarchy in a hoe that this can be also useful in modern string hysics or elsewhere. To this aim, we formulate the extended discrete KP (edkp) hierarchy in a suitable form in Section 2. In our oinion this reresentation is well bacground for erforming disersionless limit and for deriving Lax equations. This is doing in Section 3. In Aendix we dislay some evolution equations coded in corresonding Lax equations. 2. edkp hierarchy We consider the sace of analytic functions {f(s) : s R} whose domain of definition is restricted to Z. We write f = f(i) R. On R the shift oerator Λ = ex( / s) acts as (Λf)(i) = f(i + 1). Let us consider the sace of seudo-difference ( DO) oerators D = R[Λ,Λ 1 ) of the form N P = j Λ j, j R j= This wor was suorted by INTAS grant and RFBR grant c 2008 Kluwer Academic Publishers. 2 2 ANDREI K. SVININ where N Z is treated as an order of P. Phase-sace of the discrete KP hierarchy can be identified with that of Zaharov-Shabat discrete dressing oerators M = {S = I + 1w Λ : w R}. One considers the slitting D = D (1) + D (1) with D (1) + < I,Λ,Λ 2,... > and D (1) < Λ 1,Λ 2,... >. The discrete KP hierarchy is given by Sato-Wilson S t (1) or equivalently by Lax equations Q t (1) = π (1) (Q )S = π (1) + (Q )S SΛ = [π (1) + (Q ),Q] = [Q,π (1) (Q )] where the symbols π (1) + and π (1) stand for rojections of any DO on the sace D (1) + and D (1), resectively. The discrete Lax oerator is defined as usual: Q = SΛS 1 = Λ + 1q Λ 1. Fixing any oint M and integer n 2, we consider the slitting D = D (n) + D (n) with and D (n) + < I,Λ n Q 1 n,λ 2n Q 2(1 n),... > D (n) < Λ n Q n 1,Λ 2n Q 2(n 1),... >. One can see that this slitting (for n 2) essentially deends on the oint of the hase-sace M. For any P D one can write P = N Λ Nn Q N(1 n) + N 1 Λ(N 1)n Q (N 1)(1 n) +... This reresentation is correctly defined since Λ n Q (1 n) is a DO of an order and therefore one can ste-by-ste calculate the coefficients N 1, N 2,... as olynomials of and q. We define edkp hierarchy by S = π (n) (Q )S = π (n) + (Q )S SΛ LETTER4.tex; 27/02/2008; 6:23;.2
Extended discrete KP hierarchy and its disersionless limit 3 or equivalently by Q = [π (n) + (Q ),Q] = [Q,π (n) (Q )] (1) with π (1) + and π(1) being rojections on corresonding saces. One can easy rove that these equations are correctly defined maing of use standard reasonings. Let χ(z) (z i ) i Z where z can be interreted as a (formal) sectral arameter. Define w(z) = Sχ(z) and formal Baer-Ahiezer function Ψ(t,z) = w(z)e ξ(t,z), where ξ(t,z) n,=1 t (n) z. It is common of nowledge that Lax equations lie (1) can be understood as consistency condition of the linear system QΨ = zψ, Ψ = π (n) + (Q )Ψ. In what follows we are going to show that this system can be cast in the form (n 1) Ψ Q (n) Ψ = zψ, z = (Q n (n) ) +Ψ (2) with Q (n) S (n) ΛS 1 (n) where S = I+ 1 z(n 1) w Λ n. The symbol + denotes taing only nonnegative owers of Λ. Multilication χ(z) by z is equivalent to the action of the shift oerator. Therefore one can easy to chec that as a result of action S (n) to χ(z) for any integer n 1 is w(z) and from this we obtain that Q (n) w(z) = zw(z) or Q (n) Ψ = zψ. To succeed it is useful to define, on M, the functions through the relation Q r (n) = S (n)λ r S 1 (n) = Λr + z (n 1) Λ r n. 1 By definition, we have Q r (n) Ψ = zr Ψ. Let us rove that for an arbitrary air of integers n,n relation Q r (n ) = Λr + z (n 1) Λ r n Q (n n ) (n ) 1 1 the (3) is valid. Firstly we have Q r (n ) Ψ = Λr + z (n 1) Λ r n Q (n n ) (n ) Ψ 1 LETTER4.tex; 27/02/2008; 6:23;.3
4 ANDREI K. SVININ = Λr + z (n 1) Λ r n Ψ 1 = Q r (n) Ψ = zr Ψ. Moreover it is obvious that LHS and RHS of (3) are of the same form. More exlicitly one can rewrite (3) as q (n,r) (i) = (i) + 1 m=1 m (i)q (n,m(n n )) (i + r mn). m In articular q (n,r) 1 (i) = 1 (i). Putting in (3) n = 1, we obtain Q r = Λ r + 1 Let r = n with some integer 1, then Q n = Λ n + 1 Λ r n Q (n 1). q (n,n) Λ ( )n Q (n 1). Multilying LHS and RHS of the latter by Q (1 n), we get Q n Q (1 n) = Q = Λ n Q (1 n) + 1 q (n,n) Λ ( )n Q ( )(1 n) The latter formula gives suitable form to slit Q on ositive and negative arts. In articular π (n) + (Q ) = Λ n Q (1 n) + From this we have =1 π (n) + (Q )Ψ = z (1 n) {Λ n + q (n,n) Λ ( )n Q ( )(1 n). =1 z (1 n) (Q n (n) ) +Ψ. } z (n 1) q (n,n) Λ ( )n Ψ The latter gives the second equation in (2). The consistency condition of (2) is exressed in the form of the following Lax equations: z (n 1) Q (n) = [(Q n (n) ) +,Q (n) ]. (4) LETTER4.tex; 27/02/2008; 6:23;.4
Extended discrete KP hierarchy and its disersionless limit 5 Let us send some lines to give bibliograhical remars concerning (4). These equations, in fact, are equivalent to Kuershmidt s ga KP hierarchy (see, for examle [7]). More exactly, he considers Lax oerator with anti-normal ordering L = Λ + Λ 1 Γ q 0 + Λ 1 2Γ q , Γ 1 and corresonding Lax equations L t = [L Γ +,L]. (5) In Ref. [7] the roblem of integrable discretization of the flows given by (5) is solved. In Refs. [8] and [9] we exhibit two-arametric class of invariant submanifolds Sl n of the Darboux-KP chain [10]. Moreover, we showed that double intersections S n,r,l = S0 n Sln r l 1 lead to a broad class of integrable lattices over finite number of fields (see also [11], [12] and references therein ). All these systems share Lax reresentation of the form z (n 1) Qr (n) with restricted Lax oerator Q r (n) = Λr + l =1 = [(Q n (n) ) +,Q r (n) ]. z (n 1) Λ r n. It is imortant to note that r in this case cannot be treated as a ower of Q (n). The equations (1) have its advantage that they clearly show that the flows labeled by integers n 2 are defined on the same hase-sace as for the customary discrete KP hierarchy and in our oinion this reresentation is more convenient for erforming disersionless limit. 3. Disersionless edkp hierarchy Disersionless limit of the discrete KP hierarchy or more generally of the Toda lattice one [13], [14] is erformed by relacing t t, e s e s, q 1 q LETTER4.tex; 27/02/2008; 6:23;.5
6 ANDREI K. SVININ and tending to zero. Then s is relaced by formal arameter 1 and sectral roblem turn into z = e + q 1 + q 2 e + q 3 e In turn, the disersionless discrete KP hierarchy is defined by corresonding Lax equations z t (1) = {π (1) + (z ),z} = {z,π (1) (z )}. The commutator [, ] on D in the disersionless limit is relaced by Poisson bracet {f,g} = f g s f ( g f s = g s f ) g, = e. s Symbols π (1) + and π (1) D (1) + < 1,, 2,... > and in this case stand for rojections on the saces D (1) < 1, 2,... > which slit on ositive and negative arts the sace D of formal Laurent series of the form N P = j j j= with some coefficients being analytic functions of the variable s. We can immediately to write down the equations which are a result of disersionless limit alied to edkp hierarchy in the form of (1). We have z = {π (n) + (z ),z} = {z,π (n) (z )]. (6) Now the symbols π (n) + and π (n) are used to denote rojections on the saces D (n) + < 1,z1 n n,z 2(1 n) 2n,... > and D (n) < z n 1 n,z 2(n 1) 2n,... >, resectively. We aware that the (disersionless) discrete KP hierarchy is only a art of the (disersionless) Toda one and we are going in future to discuss extended version of the Toda lattice hierarchy. 1 Note that this has nothing to do with integer labeled evolution arameters LETTER4.tex; 27/02/2008; 6:23;.6
Extended discrete KP hierarchy and its disersionless limit 7 Aendix a. Let us give here exlicit form of some functions. We calculate first three of them to wit 1 (i) = w 1 (i) w 1 (i + r) = q (r) (i), 2 (i) = w 2 (i) w 2 (i + r) + w 1 (i + r n)(w 1 (i + r) w 1 (i)) = q (r) 2 (i) q(r) 1 (i)q(n 1) 1 (i + r n), 3 (i) = w 3 (i) w 3 (i + r) + w 1 (i + r 2n)(w 2 (i + r) w 2 (i)) +w 2 (i + r n)(w 1 (i + r) w 1 (i)) +w 1 (i + r 2n)w 1 (i + r n)(w 1 (i) w 1 (i + r)) = q (r) 3 (i) q(r) 1 (i)q(n 1) 2 (i + r n) q (r) 2 (i)q(2(n 1)) 1 (i + r 2n) +q (r) 1 (i)q(n 1) 1 (i + r n)q (2(n 1)) 1 (i + r 2n). Here q (r) s are the coefficients of r-th ower of Q, i.e. Q r = Λ r + q (r) 1 + q (r) 2 Λ b. Let us exhibit some examles of equations of motion coded in (6) for n = 2. We have the following: q 1 2 q 3 1 q 1 1 = 2(q 2 q 1q 1 ), q 2 1 = 2(q 3 q 1q 2 + q2 1 q 1 ), = 2(q 4 q 1 q 3 + (q 2 1 q 2 )q 2 (q 3 1 2q 1 q 2 q 3 )q 1),... = 4q 3, q 2 2 = 4(q 4 + (q2 1 q 2)q 2 (q3 1 2q 1q 2 q 3 )q 1 ),...
