NCAA Southern Regional Championship SETTING THE SCENE Duke is playing in its second exhibition game of the week after battling No. 10 Georgetown to a scoreless tie. Duke outshot the Hoyas and had a 7-6 edge in corner kicks. Robert Moewes and Ben Hummel combined for the shutout with five saves. Clemson will be playing its third exhibition game Friday, beating UAB 2-1 and tying High Point 1-1 in the first two. The Tigers are picked to win the Atlantic Division and finish second in the league overall after finishing as the NCAA runner-up in BLUE DEVILS WELCOME 11 NEWCOMERS Nine freshmen join the squad in 2016, hailing from six different states and three different countries. Kerr also welcomes a pair of fifth-year transfer graduate students in Robert Moewes and Ben Hummel. Both are goalkeepers who graduated from Binghamton and Princeton, respectively, and are pursuing master s degrees in Duke s Fuqua School of Business Master of Management Studies program. Moewes hails from Germany, bringing a fourth country to the mix of newcomers. Three rookies earned the start against Georgetown as Max Moser, Suniel Veerakone and CC Uche got the nod. DUKE HAS INTERNATIONAL FEEL Argentina, Austria, Canada, Germany, Norway, Peru, Scotland and the United States all are represented on Duke s 2016 roster, giving the Blue Devils a strong international flavor. Among the languages spoken among the group are German, French, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, Norwegian and of course English spoken of course with many different accents. TOP RETURNING SCORERS The Blue Devils welcome back five of their top eight scorers from a year ago, with junior Brian White coming in as the high scorer with six goals and an assist for 13 points. He spent the summer with the Carolina Railhawks U23 squad. Senior Brody Huitema looks to complete his career with a bang after netting four goals and an assist, while junior Macario Hing-Glover looks to be even more of an offensive threat following his eight points in Junior Cameron Moseley will hope to have a breakout junior season up top for the Blue Devils. He had one goal last season after netting five early in his freshman campaign. ANCHORING THE DEFENSE Duke lost a pair of defenders in Jared Rist and Tyler Hilliard to graduation and returns the talented duo of Markus Fjørtoft and Carter Manley. They will likely be buoyed by rookies CC Uche and Max Moser. In goal, four Blue Devils will vie for the starting role. Two of those are fifth-year graduate student transfers, including 2015 Hermann Award Watch List member Robert Moewes of Binghamton. Princeton graduate Ben Hummel also will battle for a spot in net. Duke will feature much depth in the back, giving Kerr lots of options. An ironman for Duke, he is a tireless worker and holding midfielder for the Blue Devils who will look to spark the attack from a holding midfield role. Sophomore Ciaran McKenna could join him in the middle after seeing quality minutes as a rookie. The Blue Devils will have a host of talented players who can run the flanks, including Macario Hing-Glover and junior Bryson Asher. Rookie Suniel Veerakone will be the true No. 10 in the middle of the park, creating scoring chances in the final third with his vision and passing. AGU BENEFITS FROM TIME WITH U.S. U19s Rookie striker Colby Agu has spent quality time with the U-19 U.S. National Team the past six months. The Cary, N.C., native was picked to join the team for the 2016 Slovakia Cup, which the United States won the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Russia. Agu earned a start in one game and came off the bench in the other four to help the U.S. to the title. He also was with the team at the COTIF Tournament, coming on in the second half to help secure a win over Spain. The United States was eventually ousted by Bahrain. LOOKING TO BUILD ON 2015 OFFENSE Duke had one of its best offensive seasons under Kerr in 2015, scoring 104 goals. The total was seven more than the year prior and the third most in Kerr s eight seasons. The 5.58 points per game were the second most by a Blue Devil team under Kerr. Duke returns 50 percent of its points from last season after the loss of Zach Mathers and Jeremy Ebobisse s 24 and 18 points, respectively DUKE MEN S SOCCER
