2 From The President While we are busy preparing for our Annual Conference in Toronto in March, thanks to the work of our beloved editor Gail King, the Table of Contents of the new issue of JEAL is on my laptop screen and it is the time for me to write the president s message again. Thinking about what CEAL has accomplished in 2016 and what it will face in 2017, I believe the contents of our coming annual conference with its theme of Challenges and Opportunities: East Asian Librarianship Today and Tomorrow will be beneficial to our members. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues on the CEAL Executive Board for their insightful advice, suggestions, and, most importantly, truly dedicated and innovative work during the process of forming the conference program. Reviewing the contents of this JEAL issue, specifically, The CEAL Statistics For North American Institutions Collected and Compiled by the CEAL Statistics Committee, reminds me of the huge contributions made by many of our members working behind the scenes, who collected and managed these important data sets. These data sets represent our achievements and show our professional relevance in a measurable way. So my gratitude goes to everyone who has been working and contributing all these years and a special thanks to Vickie Fu Doll, the Statistics committee chair, for her leadership in organizing and managing the CEAL statistics. You have made our profession more distinguished. Finally, in this issue the report by Ellen Hammond titled Innovation Grant Report will shed a brief light on the unprecedented grant program. The CEAL/Mellon Innovation Grant Program, led by Ellen and supported by our members, is the first of its kind in CEAL history and has led to some of the most innovative projects in our field. These projects epitomize some of the newest challenges and opportunities for our profession. We plan to give a more detailed program on these projects in our 2018 annual conference. 2
was an eventful year. 2017, with more challenges, is already here. Let s meet our challenges and grab our opportunities. Jim Cheng CEAL President 3

22 Innovation Grant for East Asian Librarians Program Funds Final Projects In 2014, the Council on East Asian Libraries, through its parent organization, the Association for Asian Studies, received a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to create a program to fund East Asian studies-related collection development projects. A 2-year Innovation Grants for East Asian Librarians grant program was launched in January 2015, with the final award made in December The five award-wining projects are introduced below. They represent a range of technology uses, collection development goals, and innovative methodologies that will benefit scholars in both Japanese and Chinese studies in the future. Project leads have been asked to publish accounts of their project accomplishments after completion. In addition, they will be invited to present at the Council on East Asian Libraries Annual Meeting, held in conjunction with the Association for Asian Studies Annual Conference planned for Washington, D.C. in March University of California Irvine Libraries Project Lead: Ying Zhang, Research Librarian for Asian Studies Collaborators: Susan Xue (UC Berkeley), Zhaohui Xue (Stanford), and Xiaohe Ma (Harvard) Award: $53,810 Grant Period: August 2016 July 2017 Project: From Curation of Collection to Creation of Knowledge: Building a Bilingual Dictionary of Ming Government Official Titles through Crowdsourcing This project aims to fill a critical lacuna in Chinese reference collection development by creating through an open source platform to crowd-source content an online dictionary of Ming dynasty official titles. This work will build on the standard source for translations of official titles by Charles O. Hucker (A Dictionary of Official Titles in Imperial China) by adding over 600 translations for the Ming dynasty. This will fill a major gap for scholars of the Ming and those who need standardized English translations of imperial government titles for digital humanities and other projects. The new dictionary will be publicly accessible through the UC-Irvine digital repository. Stanford University Libraries Project Lead: Jidong Yang, Head, East Asia Library Collaborators at Stanford: Zhaohui Xue, Nicholas Taylor, and Gary Geisler; under the general oversight PI Michael A. Keller 22
23 Award: $39,650 Grant Period: August 2016 July 2017 Project: Recording the Emerging Chinese Civil Society: Archiving Websites and Social Media of Chinese NGOs and Making Them Accessible This project will enhance and extend an effort to collect born digital materials (websites and social media) published by Chinese NGOs active in the sectors of environmental protection, HIV/AIDS, labor and migrant workers, legal aid, social enterprise, women and gender issues, and ethnic minorities. The grant will be used to double the coverage of an initial project begun by the Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society, enhance the metadata to improve accessibility, and develop an existing open-source platform for online exhibits to feature the archived content. University of Washington Libraries Project Lead: Azusa Tanaka, Japanese Studies Librarian Collaborators: Hiroyuki Good (University of Pittsburgh) and Daniel McKee (Cornell) Award: $50,500 Grant Period: January 2017 December 2017 Project: Japanese Multi-Volume Sets Discoverability Improvement Project The goal of this project is to create an open-access, full-text searchable, online collection of finding aids (indices, user guides, etc.) for Japanese multi-volume sets held in North American libraries. The finding aids will be scanned, made searchable through OCR, and ingested into the University of Washington institutional repository. The finding aid will also be linked with the OCLC record for each multi-volume set title. The project will greatly enhance the discoverability of the otherwise hidden scholarly content in these sets for users world-wide Duke University Libraries Project Lead: Luo Zhou, Chinese Studies Librarian, in collaboration with Guo-Juin Hong (Asian & Middle Eastern Studies Department) Award: $40,000 Grant Period: July 2015 June 2017 Project: The Memory Project This project represents an original contribution in the area of processing, preserving, and making accessible digital primary sources, while also grappling with issues involved in the enhancement of East Asian language AV materials for presentation in an English language context. Grant funds will be used primarily for the arrangement, description, and 23
24 reformatting of over 1,000 interviews constituting an oral history of the Great Famine in post-revolution rural China. The Sheridan Libraries, Johns Hopkins University Project Lead: Yunshan Ye, Librarian for East Asian Studies, in collaboration with Cathy Zeljak and Yan He (The George Washington University Libraries) and Ding Ye (Joseph Mark Lauinger Memorial Library, Georgetown University) Award: $77,610 Grant Period: July 2015 June 2017 Project: Blogging and Microblogging: Preserving Non-Official Voices in China s Anti- Corruption Campaign This project, is an innovative approach in the area of harvesting and making accessible Chinese language social media content, including both blogs and micro-blogs, and the development of an existing open-source tool to allow for the harvesting of Chinese-language content. Blog and micro-blog content related to the Anti-Corruption campaign in contemporary China will be the focus of this archiving effort. Ellen H. 26 25 IN MEMORIAM Toshiyuki Aoki Toshiyuki Aoki was born in Niigata Prefecture in Japan and in 1956 came to the United States to study at Columbia University. He received a B.S. Degree in geography in 1959 and an M.L.S. Degree in library science from the same university in From 1968 he worked at Harvard-Yenching Library as head of its Japanese Section until his retirement in He loved music and literature and spent most of his retired time translating classical novels into Japanese. He died on October 19, Mr. Aoki is survived by his family in Japan and in Sweden. A burial service was held on Monday, December 5 at Christ Church Cambridge, with burial following at Mount Auburn Cemetery. (From the obituary published in The Boston Globe, November 13, 2016) Remembering Toshiyuki Aoki During his tenure of over three decades at Harvard, Mr. Aoki served numerous faculty members, students, and visiting scholars in Japanese Studies while selecting and acquiring research materials on both Humanities and Social Sciences. Not only are the depth and breadth of the Japanese collection remarkable; it also offers many pleasant surprises to those who explore it. He was and still is highly respected among his library colleagues while many remember him as a bit reserved and mild manner man. After his retirement, Mr. Aoki, a long-time resident of Cambridge, Mass, was witnessed frequently at the café of the Harvard Coop Bookstore in the Harvard Square. He was typically translating mysteries such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes into Japanese. He liked to keep his brain active while learning something new, his niece now living in Sweden told me at the funeral service. The conversation reminded me of his abacus. When I succeeded to his position in 1999, I found impeccable acquisition transaction records all neatly hand-written. He would not surrender to modern conveniences like a calculator as long as his abacus and his hand and brain would work beautifully. Mr. Aoki was a man of few words, as you might remember, but his solid professionalism is quite eloquently presented in the collection. Every time I walk in the stacks, I treasure the wonderful collection he built and left for us. Kuniko Yamada McVey Librarian for the Japanese Collection Harvard-Yenching Library 25
26 Toshiyuki Aoki ( ) A Tribute By Eugene W. Wu Toshiyuki Aoki, an extremely private person, was a man of few words but he stood tall among his colleagues. His library career began at the East Asian Library of Yale University, first as a cataloger and then the Japanese acquisitions librarian. In 1968 I invited him to join Harvard-Yenching Library as head of the Japanese Collection, succeeding Mr. Shigeharu Isobe who had returned to Japan. He remained in that capacity for thirty-one years until he took early retirement in 1999, two years after I did. I knew little about him personally in 1968 except that he was very well received by his colleagues at Yale. It didn t take long before I discovered why. Mr. Aoki, as we all affectionately called him, was a thoughtful, understanding, supportive leader who led by example. He demanded much of himself, and his attention to detail and sense of responsibility inspired both those working under and with him. He was therefore also liked and respected by his colleagues at Harvard-Yenching Library. I found in him a person I could completely trust. When he joined the Harvard-Yenching Library, the Library s Japanese Collection was in need of a larger selection of academic journals and government documents, the latter being an important research source. The Library was also somewhat deficient in pre-war publications, especially in the social sciences. He set out to improve the situation, first by greatly expanding the Library s exchange program with universities and other research organizations in Japan, and later on through a number of cooperative acquisitions projects sponsored by the Eastern Library Consortium composed of East Asian Libraries of Columbia, Princeton, Yale and Harvard Universities, with financial support from the Japan- United States Friendship Commission. Particularly worthy of mention in this connection is the cooperative purchasing program under which the consortium members would exchange, on a quarterly basis, lists of expensive publications each library had purchased, or was in the process of purchasing, in order to avoid unnecessary duplications. The lists were also distributed to some twenty other smaller Japanese collections in other libraries for their information. Another cooperative project was the division of labor in the acquisition of local gazetteers from Japan, with each consortium member taking responsibility acquiring in depth local gazetteers from certain geographic regions, thus increasing the total number of such publications in the U.S. libraries. These cooperative and resource-sharing programs proved very successful, and in 1988, in order to help further stretch the libraries combined acquisitions budget, Mr. Aoki was asked to be the liaison with the Center for Research 26
27 Libraries (CRL) in Chicago, tasked with recommending the purchase of Japanese publications priced over one thousand dollars. Mr. Aoki also contributed in making the contents of the Japanese Collection of the Harvard-Yenching Library better known. He assisted Mr. John Yung-hsiang Lai, Associate Librarian of the Harvard-Yenching Library, in the publication in 1985 of the Library s Japanese card catalog in thirty-three volumes by Garland Publishing of New York. The book catalog was a major step in making the bibliographic information about the Library s Japanese Collection better known to scholars outside of Cambridge. In 1994 he also cocompiled with Prof. Oka Masahiko of the National Institute of Japanese Literature in Tokyo, a specialist on the literature of the Edo Period and Edo editions, yet another catalog: ハーバード燕京図書館和書目錄 (Early Japanese Books in the Harvard-Yenching Library, Harvard University) (Tokyo: Yumani Shobo, 1994). While Mr. Aoki was a very private person, he was passionate about and dedicated to his work. His in-depth knowledge of the history and civilization of Japan made him an exceptional Japanese studies librarian. Never flashy, he went about in his own quiet way and got the job done superbly. The outstanding Japanese collection he spent decades building at the Harvard-Yenching Library will be his legacy to scholars for generations to come. The field has lost a diligent laborer and I a good friend and a respected colleague, but when I close my eyes, I can still hear him playing his piccolo at the staff parties of the Harvard-Yenching Library. 27
