Thermal effective otential for the Polyakov. Introduction Our goal is to comute the effective otential for the Polyakov loo in ure SUN Yang-Mills theory beyond two-loo order. The Polyakov loo is the order arameter for the deconfinement hase transition, for a review see ]. At two-loo order, the minimum of the otential corresonds to comletely broken ZN center symmetry. The ressure u to two loos is thus given by erturbative Yang-Mills theory without the holonomy the Wilson line. At three loo order and beyond, the effective otential is not known. The Polyakov loo is defined as a Wilson loo that winds in the temoral direction: β ] trpx = trp ex ig dτa 4 x,τ,. where β = /T is the inverse temerature. One way to construct the effective otential V for the Polyakov loo is to comute the ath integral with the constraints, 3]: N e βv V Ln = DA δ L m d 3 x x ] m= V N trpm e SYMA,. where V is the three volume. The delta functions set the satial average of the m-th winding of the Polyakov loo to be some value L m. For SUN, N indeendent constraints are reuired. The effective otential then consists of two arts: 0 V = V free +V insert..3 V free is the usual free energy in the resence of the background field Ā µ = δ µ4 Ā 4. We choose the background field to be constant and diagonal: gβā a 4 = θ a = θ i j = θ i θ j,.4 where a,b =...N and i, j =...N are the indices for the adjoint and fundamental reresentations in SUN, resectively. The other term in the effective otential, V insert, comes from the delta function constraints. It is known that V free deends on the gauge fixing arameter ξ at two-loo order 4]. The full combined effective otential, V free +V insert, is gauge invariant by construction. The gauge invariance at order g was exlicitly shown in, 3]. The leading order V is the Gross-Pisarski-Yaffe-Weiss otential 6, 7]. The next-to-leading order turns out to be roortional to the GPY-Weiss otential, 3, 5]. The effective otential u to order g modulo loo-indeendent terms can be written as where V = N T 4 π 5g N 6π L n = N N i= n 0 L n L n n 4,.5 e inθ i.6 with N i θ i = 0. It is remarkable that there are only two traces u to order g. A naive ower counting redicts three-trace terms at g order. Because the order of hase transition at large N deends on the structure of the otential in terms of the Polyakov loos 8], comuting at the three-loo order has some theoretical interests as well. There is an alternative aroach to obtain the gauge invariant result at order g as done in 5].
Thermal effective otential for the Polyakov. Evaluation of sum-integrals with the holonomy In this section, we establish a new techniue to comute sum-integrals with the holonomy. In the calculation of the Polyakov loo effective otential at higher loo order, there are many sumintegrals which we find difficult to comute using the standard methods, such as erforming the Matsubara sum directly or an analytic continuation of the momentum in the temoral direction 4 9]. We show that the new method is more suited for our urose using some examles, which are relevant for the three-loo calculations.. Poisson resummation Consider a eriodic function, f θ + π = f θ, of the form where θ is real. The Fourier series of f θ is The Fourier coefficients are given by f θ = Fπn + θ,. n Z f m = f θ = f m e imθ.. m Z = π 0 dθ π e imθ f θ.3 dθ π e imθ Fθ..4 This is a version of the Poisson resummation, which was used e.g. in 0, ]. In erturbative finite-temerature field theory with the nontrivial holonomy, f θ arises naturally from Feynman diagrams, where F 4 /T is obtained after the satial momentum integral. The Poisson duality in this context is the duality between the Matsubara mode n in 4 and the A 4 charge m in the m-th winding of the Polyakov loo. This duality rovides a mathematical connection between the effective otential in terms of the Polyakov loos L m and the one in terms of the eigenvalues θ. The other advantage of this method is that the sum is relaced by the integral as shown in E..4, and this makes it more analytically tractable as we show below. The zero winding term m = 0 is nothing but the zero-temerature contribution. As in the method of analytic continuation of 4, the Poisson resummation can naturally searate the zerotemerature and finite-temerature contributions. Another advantage of the Poisson resummation is that the order of the Matsubara sum and the satial momentum integral can be interchanged, while the method of analytic continuation reuires to erform the Matsubara sum first. At higher loo order, doing the satial momentum before the Matsubara sum is essential in order to factorize two momentum as argued in ].. Examles We comute a sum-integral of the form f u,v θ a = a u,.5 a 4 v
Thermal effective otential for the Polyakov where u,v are real numbers and The four-momentum is defined as n Z d d π d..6 We use the Poisson resummation formula to get a 4 = πn + θ a T and a = a f u,v θ a = T Fπn + θ a = T f m u,v e im θ a..8 n Z m Z We evaluate f m u,v to comute the sum-integral. First we erform the momentum integral using the dimensional regularization, µ ε d d π d a u = Γu d µε d π d Γu a 4 d u.9 where d = 3 ε. µ is the scale in the dimensional regularization. We thus have where Second we comute f u,v m using E..4: f u,v m For m 0 we use the identity = c d,u T v = c d,u T v Fθ = c d,u T v θ d u θ v.0 c d,u = Γu d µ ε d π d Γu T 3 u.. T 0 0 θ d u θ v e im θ where 0 < Reα < and z is real and nonzero. This gives f m u,v = c d,u Γd u v + π T v m d u v+ dθ. π dθ π θ d u v e imθ + e iπv e im θ..3 dθ θ +α e izθ = eiπα Γα z α.4 e i π d u v+ + e i π d u+v+..5 Performing small-ε exansion for u = and v = 0,,, we get { { } f m,0, f m,, f m, T = 4m π, i 4m π, 8π T ε + c + } logm 8π..6 T In this euation, m 0 and c = + γ + logπµ /T. For the sake of brevity we will not discuss the zero-temerature contributions m = 0 in this roceedings. 3
Thermal effective otential for the Polyakov 3. One-loo self-energy with the holonomy The one-loo self-energy with the incoming momentum a in the Feynman gauge ξ = can be written as Π µν ad a = g f abc f b c d Πµν a,θ b,θ c 3. where Π µν a,θ b,θ c b r c { D b ] a g µν D µ b ν b + + D } a µ ν a with r c = a b. Here D = d + is the sace-time dimension. In the case of the trivial holonomy, this reduces to the result of 3]. We note that the structure constant that aears in the self-energy f abc f b c d is invariant under the exchange of b c. We can therefore use the following maniulation: f abc f b c d h b,r c = f abc f b c d δ + + rh b,r c = f abc f b c d hr c, b, 3.3 r where we have used the change of variables b r c. Using E. 3.3, the following identity can be roven f abc f b c d µ b b r c = f abc f b c d µ a b r c This identity was used to obtain the exression given in E. 3.. E. 3.4 can be also used to exress the self-energy in another form: where Π µν a,θ b,θ c = D Π µν a,θ b,θ c g µν Π µν a,θ b,θ c ag µν a µ ν a rc b r c 3.5 b + a µ b + a ν. 3.6 This articular decomosition was used by Arnold and Zhai to comute the g 4 contribution to the ressure in the case of trivial holonomy. Without the holonomy both Π µν and Π µν are transverse. In the resence of a nontrivial holonomy, Π µν is no longer transverse. Using E. 3.5, we can comute the non-transversity of the self-energy exlicitly: a µ Π µν ad a = g ν b D f abc f b c d 3.7 b b r c = g 4π 3 T 3 D f abc f b c d B 3 = 4π 3 g T 3 k B 3 θik π θb π θ jk B 3 π δ ν4 3.8 ] δ ν4 3.9 where we comleted the suare and used Es. 3.3 and 3.4 to get the first line. B 3 x is the third Bernoulli olynomial. In the last line, we used a = i j and D = 4. This identity was first derived in ] using the BRS symmetry; see also 4] where this identity was discussed in a different context. The non-transversity of the self-energy makes higher-loo calculations more comlicated but lays an imortant role for the gauge invariance of the effective otential. 4
Thermal effective otential for the Polyakov 3. Static limit The self-energy in the static limit 4 = 0 and 0 is reuired for the g 3 comutation in the next section. From E. 3.5, we obtain Π 44 b θ a,θ b,θ c = 4 + θ a T 3.0 Π xx θ a,θ b,θ c = c c 4 x b c b c θ a T b c and Π µν ad θ a = 0 when µ ν. For the trivial holonomy θ = 0, we obtain the usual exression: 3. Π 44 ad = 3 Ng T δ ad = m Dδ ad 3. where m D is the Debye mass. In general we can evaluate the eigenvalues of the self-energy with the nontrivial holonomy in the static limit by comuting Es. 3.0 and 3. and then diagonalizing the matrix in E. 3.. The self-energies for the charged off-diagonal gluons with θ a = θ i j, i j, do not mix with other states. Therefore the diagonalization is not reuired for the charged gluons: Using the identity 3.9, we obtain Λ i j µ = δ µ4 4π 3 g T Π µν i j, ji = δ µν Λ i j µ. 3.3 N k= B θik 3 π θ B jk 3 π. 3.4 θ i j The self-energies for the neutral diagonal gluons with θ a = 0, on the other hand, can mix with other diagonal gluons. In this case we have c = b. The self-energies for the neutral gluons are Π 44 0,θ b,θ c = 4 b = T θb B π 3.5 Π xx 0,θ b,θ c = where we have used the following identity: d d d Γk = d d m k Γk + m k The mass matrix for the neutral gluons then becomes Π 44 ad = g T f abc f b c d B θb. 3.8 π Because of the off-diagonal elements, it is usually not straightforward to diagonalize the mass matrix analytically excet for N = or N = 3. Nevertheless as any symmetric matrix, it can be diagonalized to yield N mass eigenvalues Π 44 ab0 Π 44 ab0 = diag Λ 4,Λ 4,...,Λ N for the N neutral gluons in this new basis. We use the same indices a,b for the new basis below. 5
Thermal effective otential for the Polyakov 4. Free energy at order g 3 As well known in erturbative Yang-Mills theory without the holonomy, due to resummation of the infrared divergencies resent beyond the two-loo order g in ring diagrams, the next order is not g 4 but g 3 9]. Similar divergence can be exected with the holonomy. Consider V ring = tr k= ] Π αγ ac D γβ k cb k. 4. The otential infrared divergence comes from the zero mode. In order to erform the trace oeration, we need to diagonalize the N matrices Π ab in the static limit, which are 4 4 matrices. The neutral gluon roagator mixes with other neutral gluon roagator, while the charged gluons do not mix as argued in the revious section. We first consider the neutral gluons. In this case, θ a in the roagator is zero, so it gives a usual resummation of ring diagrams. The only modification is that we have to use the new basis where the self-energies are diagonal. We therefore have V ring n.g. N T d= d 3 π 3 ln + Λd 4 ] Λd 4 where Λ d 4 is the eigenvalue of the self-energy for the neutral gluons Π44 ab 3.9. Performing the momentum integral, we obtain the g 3 contribution from the neutral gluons V 3 n.g. = T 4 π N d= 4. Λ d 3/ 4 T. 4.3 A more exlicit form of V n.g. 3 for SU3 is given in 4, 5]. For the charged gluons, the self-energies are already diagonal. Taking only the zero mode, V ring c.g. T α,i j d 3 π 3 ln + Λ i j α θ i j T + and erforming the momentum integral, we get { V c.g. 3 3/ = T θi α,i j π jt + Λ i α j θ i j T } 3 Λ i j α θ i j T + 8π Λi α j The total g 3 contribution to the free energy is the sum of the two terms ], 4.4 θi j T ]. 4.5 V 3 free = V 3 n.g. +V 3 c.g If θ = 0, Λ a 4 = m 3 D, and we have V free = N T m 3 D /π, which is the known erturbative result without the holonomy. All N gluons contribute to the g 3 order. On the other hand, when θ O, only the first term V n.g. 3 accounting for N neutral gluons contributes, as the remaining NN gluons do not dislay an IR divergence owing to an effective mass roortional to T θ. In 4] it was noticed that the eigenvalues of the self-energy become negative for sufficiently large θ near the confined hase. The window of this instability becomes narrower as N becomes larger 5]. 6
I3a Thermal effective otential for the Polyakov I3b I3f I3d I3e I3c I3g a I 3a b I 3b c I 3c d I 3d e I 3e f I 3 f g I 3g Figure : Three-loo free energy diagrams. The solid and dashed lines are the gluon and ghost roagators, resectively. Π is the one-loo self-energy. 5. Free energy at order g 4 The three-loo free energy is given by the sum of all the Feynman diagrams shown in Fig.. Including the symmetry factor and the negative sign due to the ghost loo, we have V 4 free = 48 I3a + 8 I3b + 4 I3c 3 I3d 4 I3e I3 f + 4 I3g. 5. We now take the large-n limit so that we can reduce the sum-integrals as follows. Using the momentum and color conservation, each Feynman diagram can be written as the sum-integral in terms of three momenta, a b and r c. We use the double line notation and define a = i j, b = kl, c = mn. Using f i j,kl,mn = i δil δ kn δ m j δ in δ k j δ ml 5. we can sum over the other color indices. We then comlete the suare, a b = a + b a b, and take into account the symmetry of the diagrams to simlify the numerators. It turns out that we can reduce the Feynman diagrams 3a-3f into a linear combination of two master integrals. We summarize the results of the reduction for the diagrams I 3a I 3 f : { I 3a,I 3b,I 3c,I 3d,I 3e,I 3 f } = {9DD I,D D 6I D D 5I 3, where the master integrals, I and I 3, are given by I = I 3 = i jkl i jkl r r 7 D I + 3D 5I 3, 3 4 I 3, 4 I I 3, 4 I i j ik ik i j r il ril ik r il i j i j ik ik i j r il r il } Our task is now to comute these master integrals, as well as I 3g. The sum-integral I without the holonomy is called I ball in the literature. Unlike the case of trivial holonomy, the Feynman diagrams 3b-3e cannot be reduced to a single sum-integral I. This is because, in a theory with a nontrivial holonomy, the color flow is not fully correlated with the momentum flow. If the holonomy is trivial θ = 0, I 3 can be reduced to I, and the results above agree with those obtained in ]. 7
Thermal effective otential for the Polyakov 6. Conclusions and Outlook We artially comuted the effective otential for the Polyakov loo V free at order g 3 and g 4 in the Feynman gauge. To roceed further, the results of this aer have to be comlemented by V insert.3, which originates from the delta function constraints of the Polyakov loo. Then the gauge invariance has to be checked exlicitly as a test of the consistency of the calculation. We were able to comute most sum-integrals for V insert at three-loo order using the Poisson summation formula. Comuting the satial momentum integral of the master integrals at g 4 is most efficient in configuration sace, see ]. We were able to evaluate I using the configuration-sace techniue for satial momentum and the Poisson resummation formula for the Matsubara sum. To comute I 3 and I 3g a more elaborated aroach might be reuired. This is work in rogress. References ] K. Fukushima and V. Skokov, Prog. Part. Nucl. Phys. 96, doi:0.06/j.n arxiv: he-h]]. ] C. P.
