1 MSIP PROPOSAL TEAM OMICRON QUESTION: How much more destructive is the lava flow from Olympus Mons compared to a smaller volcano like Biblis Patera? Centennial High School Peoria, AZ
2 Question: How much more destructive is the lava flow from Olympus Mons compared to a smaller volcano like Biblis Patera? Importance: Question and Importance To know which volcano (bigger/smaller) is more destructive. If we know this, we can do more research on how they erupted: explosively or quietly. We can see if it destroyed any geological features on Mars (channels, craters, etc.). To see whether components on Mars are similar to the components on Earth.
3 Hypothesis Lava flow is more destructive on Olympus Mons. Lava flows are wider and longer. Lava flows are less destructive on Biblis Patera. Biblis Patera s lava flows are smaller. Both volcanoes are shield volcanoes.
4 Background Terms and Definitions Caldera: volcanic collapse crater. Amazonian Period: features of a lesser rate of cratering to present day (low plains on Northern Hemisphere). Large volcanoes are formed in the period. Flank: The flank is the side of the volcano (as distinct from the top, where the eruption emerges); to be located on the side of something Magma Chamber: Storing unit for magma (lava under the surface). 20 1. Open JMARS Program. 2. Zoom in to 18N, 226E (Olympus Mons) 3. Use the stamp layer to clarify the picture 4. Search for lava flows in the picture Procedures 5. Once you find a lava flow, measure the length of it with the ruler 6. Find the image ID number and longitude/latitude. 7. Do steps 3-6 until you have 60 total lava flow pictures on each flank of Olympus Mons. 8. Now, do the same for Biblis Patera, use the stamp layer to get clear pictures of lava flows when you find the lava flows, repeat steps 5 and 6 until you have 60 total lava flow pictures on each side of Biblis Patera

23 Why We Should Be Picked to Use the THEMIS Camera. The lava flows are longer and wider than other lava flows on smaller volcanoes, like Biblis Patera. We believe our research and data are important to use the THEMIS camera because lava flows on Olympus Mons are different from all of the other smaller volcanoes on Mars.
