Has been involved in geothermal research; surveying and interpretation of geophysical data from most of Iceland and from various countries around the world, like Croatia, Chile, Nicaragua, Mexico, Turkey, Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti, Malawi, Tanzania and the Philippines. In 2011 Gylfi works half time at Iceland GeoSurvey and half time as an adjunct at the University of Iceland, Earth Science Faculty. He has worked at the United Nations University (UNU) Geothermal Training Programme in Reykjavik, as a lecturer and supervisor in surface geophysics. He is a member of the study board of Iceland School of Energy within the University of Reykjavík and of the UNU-GTP. He wrote a book at the UNU: Geophysical exploration for geothermal resources. 3 in Iceland and Nicaragua Client: The Icelandic International Development Agency (ICEIDA) and the ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) in Nicaragua Main project features: ICEIDA started a five year geothermal capacity building project in Nicaragua in the beginning of ISOR has been the main consultant of ICEIDA during the preparations and implementation of the project. The overall goal of the project is to increase the utilization of indigenous geothermal resources in Nicaragua and reduce the dependency of the country on imported fossil fuels for energy production. The project aims at doing this by institutional support to MEM and the Ministry of Environment (MARENA) in order increase the capacity of the public sector to handle administrative aspects of further geothermal development and thereby removing bottlenecks from the process. The project will also increase the capacity of Nicaraguan geothermal professionals in the public sector, universities, and the private sector via long and short term training. s held: Chief geophysicist Activities performed: Reviewed three reports on surface exploration (for MEM) for three different geothermal areas in Nicaragua: Managua-Chiltepe, El Hoyo-Monte Galán and Casita. Presented the evaluation at several meetings in Nicaragua. Organized and taught at a short course for one week on geophysical methods in geothermal exploration in Managua. Was a part of team that organized a visit of Mario Conzalez, director of MEM to Iceland. Was a part of the team that evaluated a pre-feasibility study of the Cosiguina volcano geothermal area in Nicaragua. Client: National Energy Authority Main Project Feature: Representatives from Australia, Iceland and the United States signed the Charter Agreement for the International Partnership for Geothermal Technology (IPGT) on August 28, 2008 in Iceland. Switzerland signed the IPGT Charter in 2010 and New Zealand in The purpose of the IPGT is to accelerate the development of geothermal technology through international cooperation. EGS is in an early stage of development and groups throughout the world are working to develop effective methodologies and practices. The course was organized by UNU-GTP and LaGeo. It was a two

4 weeks course with one week of field work in the geothermal field Ahuachapan and a second week of lectures and exercises at the headquarters of LaGeo in Santa Tecla. The fieldwork began with geophysical fieldwork at Ahuachapan. The students came from El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, Dominica, Nevis and several countries in South-America. Session instructors were professionals from LaGeo in El Salvador, Costa Rican ICE and ISOR from Iceland. s held: Lecturer and supervisor in surface geophysics. The goal was to use the information from the subsurface resistivity structure to locate possible up-flow of geothermal fluid to help site drillholes and to reduce risk of drilling. s held: Field geophysicist and data inversion and interpretation Activities performed: Field geophysicist during the acquisition of the data. Name of Assignment or Project: Electromagnetic investigations of the resistivity structures around and beneath the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, southern Iceland Year: 2010-present Location: Iceland Client: ISOR in cooperation with DIAS on Ireland Main project features: Due to the recent eruptive events in 2010, scientific and social intest is overwhelming in gaining as much information as possible about the volcanic structures and processes to enhance the understanding of the partially glacier-covered Eyjafjallajökull and Katla volcanic system. Electrical and electromagnetic methods were applied to these two volcanoes to attempt imaging the resistivity structure beneath and around them, since they are far more sensitive to fluid distribution (in this case partial melt) than any other geophysical method. s held: Project manager and geophysicist Activities performed: In cooperation with Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) on Ireland, lead by Alan G. Jones and Marion Miensopust, broadband MT data and TEM data from 26 sites were collected; processed and inverted. The objective is to develop new methods to scrutinize and appraise geothermal systems in such a way that exploration wells can be sited with

6 greater accuracy than before, thereby maximizing the success rate and reducing the cost of drilling associated with geothermal projects. In addition, such precision wells would reduce any potential environmental impact. It is a cooperation between a European consortium of 24 partners and a corresponding consortium of 9 Mexican partners and is funded by the European Union and the Mexican Ministry of Energy.
