SEAMIC BACKGROUND SEAMIC was established in 1977 in Tanzania as an independent, inter- governmental institution to serve the eastern and southern African region SEAMIC s s role during its establishment was and still is to serve as a centre of knowledge and information on mineral resources

SEAMIC BACKGROUND contd Founder Member States are Ethiopia Mozambique and Tanzania, Others that later joined are Angola, Comoros, Kenya and Uganda

SEAMIC BACKGROUND Membership is now open to all African States since the GC decision in May, 2007 in Maputo, Mozambique Potential members contacted are: Zambia, Rwanda, Malawi and Sudan Botswana, Madagascar, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe Cameroon, DRC, Cote D Ivoire, D Ghana, Mali, Nigeria & Sierra Leone

VIEW OF SEAMIC

MISSION To promote socio-economic and environmentally responsible mineral development in Africa

MINERALS AND THE SUSTAINABILITY CONCEPT A Mine Project has limited life and by itself is not sustainable. The concept therefore addresses actions to be taken towards: Achievement of integrated economic, social and environmental goals with a positive impact to all stakeholders Development that meets present needs without compromising needs of future generations Ensure good governance and adopt appropriate technology and modern management

SEAMIC OBJECTIVES TOWARDS ENSURING SUSTAINABILITY Provide specialised services for the mineral industries & governments to assist in the overall development of the mining sector. Establish, sub-regional networks of programs and services and to promote regional collaboration- GEODESA, GISAfique etc etc

SEAMIC OBJECTIVES TOWARDS ENSURING SUSTAINABILITY To facilitate the promotion of mining prospects with the highest potential for economic and social impact; and To facilitate the harmonisation of mineral sector's policies and legislation
