Road to GIS, PSE s past, present and future
PSE Gas Mapping History 1840 Early 1900 s Gas piping was captured in Field Books which were than converted onto Mylar maps using Pen and Ink Washington Natural Gas was formed with a merger of Seattle Gas Co & Washington Gas & Electric Co Maps, Records and Technologies was formed as part of a merger with Washington Natural Gas and Puget Power all drafting departments became one unified department with standardized rules and methods for mapping and new technology was brought in, in the form of AutoCAD PSE Maps was born PSE s first ever gas online Map viewing tool Imagesite came online, PSE s online records database PSE began the discussion of implementing a GIS 2011 GE was chosen as the GIS provider and several teams were formed to make this dream a reality. The product chosen, GE s Gas Distribution Office (GDO) and Electric Office (EO) products. Other plans were in the works to also bring on an Electric Outage Management System (OMS) and a New Customer Database (CIS) to replace an outdated customer system GDO and EO went live 2013 OMS & CIS went live, PSE s Mapping Department began working on the aftermath of implementing a GIS with synced systems A New Map viewing system went live, Tensing. Our customers are realizing the benefits of a GIS and requesting more data and functionality 2
PSE s Past Where we were Prior to 1997 PSE was using Mylar, pen and ink, to maintain our Gas Operations System maps. The maps were maintained by one of 3 divisions, and each division had their own rules for updating the maps and own style of records. 3
PSE s Past continued In 1997 PSE deployed AutoCAD and gathered all of the Mylar maps from the various divisions, scanned them in as.tiff images into the one system and created a centralized mapping team with universal mapping standards. Combination of Old and New styles 4
PSE s Past Continued PSE maintained two map types: Plat Maps (1 100 Scale) and Operational (Op) Maps (1 400 Scale) On the plat maps we captured as much information as the field request via as-installs and service records, such as: Land base, Service representation, Mains, Year Installed, addresses, roads, street names, valves, job numbers, connecting devices and many more objects. On our Op maps we didn t capture as much: Mains with size, Valves, regulators, land base and job numbers. 5
Mapping Out with the old, in with the new 6
Map Tracking System (MTS) 7
Map Viewing tool PSEMaps In 2001 PSEMaps was born! 8
PSEMaps - Layers 9
Records Retrieval - ImageSite In 2004 PSE brought on board ImageSite PSE s first online engineering records viewing and retrieval system. Here you can search for as-installed job packages. 10
Records Retrieval - ImageSearch Soon after the arrival of ImageSite, ImageSearch was developed, due to customer feedback, this tool is a much easier tool for many folks to search for as-installed dating back to the 1950 s and our over 1 million service records. 11
Records Imaging 12
Linking Systems Within PSE Maps, AutoCAD, MTS and ImageSearch, tools were put in place to connect the systems. 13
Today PSE utilizes GE Smallworld 14
Converting from AutoCAD to GE Smallworld Conversion Process (summarized) Infotech (Cyient) chosen as our conversion partner Infotech received a copy of our plat maps and over 1 mill service records The 7000 plats were broken out into 5 sections when one section was being worked on, PSE would Freeze mapping for said section, this remained frozen until it passed QA/QC. Section 1 Frozen in AutoCAD QA/QC Process Section 2 frozen in AutoCAD and section 1 now in GDO being maintained by PSE QA/QC Process Section 3 frozen in AutoCAD and Section 1 & 2 in GDO being maintained by PSE Section 1 being converted into GDO Section 2 being converted in GDO Section 3 being converted in GDO 15
Benefits gained using GE Smallworld One Map Search and Query Capabilities All services drawn to detail Interfaces with Customer Information System (CIS) and PSE s Leak Management CP Manager Gas Outage Tool One shared land base 16
Mapping in GIS Land Pre GIS each person mapping a job was also responsible for updating the land base, when PSE Maps came onboard it was realized our land bases did not match up. 17
Mapping in GIS - Land Post GIS One Land base to map them all! 18
Mapping in GIS - Main Pre GIS Mains consisted of small bits of data: Material Type & Size Location of Main Job Number with Year installed Post GIS Main consists of (depending on the type): Pre-GIS, what you see is what you get. 19
Mapping in GIS - Services Pre GIS Services were drawn one of three ways: Single Twin <or> Detailed The data consisted of: House #, Service Size/Material, location and year installed, (if detailed it contained the lengths) Twin and Single Detailed Service 20
Mapping in GIS - Services Post GIS all services are mapped to detail and a lot more data is captured Pre-GIS 21
Benefits - Searching and Querying Pre-GIS searching consisted of highlighters and map prints. Example: we hired a team of 10 Temps to find all of our Steel Wrapped services this project took 9 months to complete. Post GIS searching takes one person 2 minutes to 3 hours to search for almost anything they want. (search time depends on quantity of results) 22
Challenges Searching and Querying The Benefits of searching are great, but sometimes we don t want to see the results! Found Data Errors: Meters identified in CIS but not in GIS Duplicate Meters Meters in wrong Parcels Unknown Material on objects Items in SAP but no GIS Address Changes 23
Useful tools Record retrieval Quick access to our Records Management System from GIS We can select multiple objects or just one object to retrieve our records. Select a piece of pipe Right-Click Get the main record 24
Useful tool CIS Link Get Data from CIS Tool created to retrieve information from CIS. We type in the Premise ID or Device Location, than GDO retrieves the customer information from CIS and populates the highlighted fields. 25

SAP to GIS GDO Query Source System (SAP) 36
SAP to GIS Cont Missing/wrong data 37
SAP to GIS - Some Benefits Too much data but this is a good thing! 38
SAP to GIS Cont Constant Monitoring 39
SAP to GIS Cathodic Protection 40
Cathodic Protection Cont How do we load it? Query Active CP System and Sites Export list to Excel Hand to IT to load in GDO 41
Cathodic Protection Cont Tracing should be a breeze! Or so we thought First Issue (Which is a big one): Traces not flowing through or stopping on logical objects Second Issue: If two systems butted up against one another, GDO decided to remove one. Third Issue: MRT is still updating the system with missing data 42
Cathodic Protection Before After 43
Cathodic Protection Continued Printed Maps! 44
Customers rising requests Need More Data! 45
Customer requests Cont Keeping up with Demand Special Projects Special Projects
Special Projects Find all Bridges with Exposed pipe and label them Find all bare steel main than add a unique identifier so replacements can be tracked Find all pre-1972 service piping and add unique identifier Create MAOP boundaries and Emergency Section boundaries in GDO Support the SynerGEE Team by resolving issues Maintain and add new Leaks into GDO Maintain and add new CP Test Sites into GDO Add designator to all piping over 250 PSIG Trace and maintain Cathodic Protection Systems in GDO 47
Lessons Learned summed up! With everything we use, there are benefits and issues. You need to consider all customers and departments impacted by the simplest decisions. To resolve any issues it takes teams of people and collaboration. We are only human! 48
