2 Background and Research Aspects Increasing interest in the detailed spatial and semantic representation of street spaces automotive industry (driver-assistance systems, autonomous driving) urban facility management; road maintenance environmental simulations 3D cadastres; urban information modeling (UIM) Data registration technologies (mobile mapping) today support the acquisition of highly detailed 3D geometries but not much experience in how to subdivide and structure the road space elements in the most useful way what semantic classes, geometrical and topological properties, as well as relationships are required for the application areas above? 3 Background and Research Aspects 3D city models today mainly consist of buildings + DTM other feature types are increasingly created, but not much experience Data models that include a representation for road spaces are either designed to support navigation / routing OR planning and construction; not so much tailored for asset management are mostly focused on linear & parametric representations; often no explicit representation of the street surfaces included CityGML 2.0 already comes with a data model for modeling roads & railways, but has some deficiencies First part: data modeling for detailed street spaces Second part: Implementation of the concept for detailed street spaces for New York City based on Open Data C. 14 Challenges in the Generation of NYC Streets Proper segmentation of road polygons into street segments, pedwalk segments and intersection areas Identification and assignment of all elements belonging to the same road section (pedwalks, dividers, roadbeds etc.) Joining different thematic data sources with the road segments (and their components) Handling of the 3rd dimension Dealing with the large data volumes (entire NYC!)
