Garg (Professor) Area Of Specialization: Geospatial techniques for Aquatic and Wetland Ecosystems Management, Climate change and ecosystem response, Biodiversity Conservation, Ecosystem Restoration, Disaster Management, Environmental Impact Assessment. Room No: AFR-101 Phone No (Office): id: Education: M.Sc. (Meerut University), M.Phil. (Jawaharlal Nehru University), Ph.D. (Gujarat University) Academic Positions Held in the University: Dean, University School of Environment Management ( ); Director, Centre for Disaster Management Studies ( ) Research Interests: Geoinformatics - for analysis and management of Aquatic and Wetland Ecosystems; Green House Gas Emission, climate change and ecosystem response; Biodiversity Conservation; Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecosystems Restoration; Landscape dynamics and Urban Heat Island Effect; Disaster Management; Environmental Impact Assessment. Research and Teaching Experience: Prof. J.K. Garg has 40 years of research experience. He is M. Phil. (Environmental Science) from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Ph.D. in the area of Wetland Conservation and Management from Gujarat University, Dr. Garg joined Space Applications Centre (ISRO), Ahmedabad in 1976 and has pioneered the research pertaining to use of remote sensing and GIS for environmental applications in the country. It may be mentioned that 1 st scientific inventory of the wetlands in the country, sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, was carried out under his guidance. He has completed successfully 12 research projects sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Space, and GNCTD in various spheres of bio-resources and environment using geospatial techniques. His main endeavour has been to develop techniques for environmental appraisal of developmental activities, wetland conservation and management, biodiversity conservation, wildlife habitat suitability analysis, landslide hazard assessment, forest fire etc. besides natural resources census using RS and GIS techniques. He was also Project Manager (Landslides) from India in International Charter on Space and Disasters. Prof. Garg has more than 160 publications which include research papers in international/national journals, book articles, and reports etc. His current areas of research include emission and modelling of GHGs, climate change and ecosystem response, hyperspectral remote sensing of wetlands, Urban Heat Island Effect, Riverine ecosystems and landscape dynamics, environmental hazards and developmental planning, biodiversity conservation, EIA of major developmental activities, river valley projects, ecosystem analysis and management, and natural hazards assessment etc. using geospatial techniques and other contemporary analytical tools.
2 Prof. Garg has been teaching remote sensing to M.Sc. students since joining Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in He has introduced and taught contemporary specialized subjects such as remote sensing and GIS, wetland conservation and management, ecosystem management and restoration, disaster risk reduction, besides modifying existing courses on ecology to suit the current global thinking. He was also responsible for development and introduction of syllabi of MBA (Disaster Management) in semester pattern. Prof. Garg has introduced and taught courses on Geoinformatics, Aquatic Biology, and Ecosystems and Natural Resource Management to Ph.D. students. Other Academic Activities: Prof. Garg has been in the selection committee of various universities such as Central University of South Bihar, Nalanda University, Rajgir, TERI University etc., and also National Centre for Antarctic and Oceanic Research, Goa, Ministry of Earth Sciences, DRDO etc. He is also Member Board of Studies in many universities. Prof. Garg has also delivered large number of lectures on use of geospatial technology for climate change, environment management, disaster management, wetland management etc. in various international and national forums such as NASA LCLUC, ASSOCHAM, National Institute of Disaster Management, Indian Institute of Public Administration, Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University etc. Prof. Garg is also Honorary Member of Wetland International South Asia, and Technical Committee of Quality Council of India -for accreditation of environmental consultants.
