1 EcoServ-GIS Ecosystem Services Mapping: A Wildlife Trust GIS Toolkit to map ecosystem services at a county scale Dr Jonathan Winn Living Landscape Coordinator Durham Wildlife Trust Dr Chloe Bellamy Ecosystem Services Mapping Officer Durham Wildlife Trust EcoServ GIS Stage I 1 year national Pilot project (Jan Dec 2012) Ecosystem Service Mapping for the Wildlife Trusts Funded via Dame Mary Smieton fund Durham Wildlife Trust, working with 8 other Wildlife Trusts 6 universities Why EcoServ GIS? Many studies different scales To provide a tool for use by Wildlife Trusts to map Ecosystem Services Emphasize nature experience and wildlife sightings services Highlight services delivered by non-designated sites / general countryside To apply at a Local / county scale To fit with a Local planning and Green Infrastructure context Policy focussed / broad scope Limitations of existing maps / reports Scale: Are maps useable or relevant to local planning? Services: Maps do not deal with full wildlife / biodiversity ecosystem services e.g. Wildlife watching potential, nature experience Cross-boundary: Green Infrastructure maps and strategies of local authorities stop at boundary Focus: Too focussed on urban or protected landscapes / uplands? Data: inaccessible, complex or site specific Much existing research, literature, reports and methods...but Local authority and conservation staff need a toolkit to help them implement the ecosystem approach; mapping is a good way to do this 1

Generic, transferable toolkit to show where ecosystem services occur Ability to respond beyond protected species and wildlife sites (urban fringe, accessible countryside) Address Wildlife Trust focussed ecosystem services wildlife sightings potential, nature experience Apply across multiple local authorities Applicable to local / neighbourhood scale 2 examples Responding to planning applications Conservation planning (Living Landscapes) Living Landscapes What will EcoServ-GIS be used for, and by who? Landscape-scale Conservation: LNPs BAP HLF Toolkit run and used by partnerships of: Wildlife Trusts Local authorities Local record centres PSMA allows OS data to be sourced and shared between organisations (Local authorities, Environment Agency etc) What next for EcoServ-GIS?
