10 SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE : BOLANGIR Introduction : Bolangir district is situated in the Western Odisha region of India.This district is named after the Head quarter town of Bolangir. The composition of the land is predominantly rural. Other important big and small towns in Bolangir district are Titilgarh, Patnagarh, Kantabanji, Loisingha, Saintala, Belpada, Tushra Agalpur, Deogaon & Chudapali. Location : Bolangir district is one of the hottest districts in Odisha. It lies between 82 o 41' to 83 o 42 East longitudes and between 20 o 9' to 21 o 05 North latitude. It is bounded by the Bargarh district in north, Kalahandi district in south Subarnapur district in the east and Nuapada district in the west. Climate : The climatic condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during March to June and cold during November to February The monsoon generally breaks during the month of June, Average annual rainfall of the district was m.m in 2014 which is higher than the normal rainfall ( m.m). Area and Population : The district has an area of 6575 sq.kms and lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 4.22 percent of the states territory and shares 3.93 percent of the states population. The density of population of the district is 251 per sq. kms. as against 270 person per sq.km of the state. It has 1783 villages ( including 32 un-inhabited villages ) covering 14 blocks, 14 Tahasils and 3 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is (17.88 %) and schedule tribe population (21.05 %). The literacy percentage of the district covers against of the state. 1

11 Agriculture : During the year , the net area sown was 542 thousand hectares against 4474 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was quintals, quintals maize, quintals mung, quintals biri, quintals kulthi, and 4202 quintals till, quintals groundnuts, 1359 quintals mustard, and 1924 quintals potatoes and quintals sugarcane. During , the total fertilizers used in Bolangir district is about MT with a breakage of MT nitrogenous, 5394 MT phosphatic and 2765 MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 43 Kg. Irrigation : During the year , it is reported by Executive Engineer, Irrigation Division Bolangir that the irrigation potential created in various source during kharif and Rabi are and hectares respectively from different sources.. Education : There were 1322 nos. of primary schools, 969 nos. of Up-Primary schools 362 nos. of Secondary Schools, and 80 nos. of General colleges in the district during Besides, there is 1 no. of Engineering Degree and 2 nos. Engineering School in the district during year to impart technical education. Health : The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 62 nos. of the Allopathic medical institutions with 444 beds facilities 18 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 33 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year Veterinary Services: During the year , 21 nos. of Hospitals and dispensaries, 114 nos. of livestock Aid centers were functioning in Bolangir district of provide veterinary services to the people. 2

12 Industry and Mining: During the year , 1270 nos. of Micro small Medium Enterprises have established with total capital investment of about Rs lakhs with 5337 nos. of Employment generated in Bolangir district. Power : Consumption of electricity in Bolangir & Titilagarh Divisions during the year covers million units and revenue villages so far electrified as on March, 2014 is 1764which constitutes 100 % of the total villages of the district. Tourist : There are 8 nos. of tourist center such as Bolangir, Ranipur-Jharial, Goikhani M.I.P., Harisakhar, Jogisarada, Patnagarh, Saintala, Turekela identified by department of Tourism and Culture, Odisha. During 2015, the numbers of Domestic tourists were and foreign tourists were 80 who visited the tourists spots of the district. Transport & Communication : During , 159 Kms. of National Highways, 134 Kms. of state highways, 121 Kms. Major district roads, 576 kms of other district roads Kms of rural roads, 505 Kms. of P.S. roads and 253 Kms of forest roads are operating in the district. Besides, 177 Kms. of Railway lines with 13 nos. of railway stations and 1 no. of passenger halts are continuing in the district. Banking : As on December 2015, there were 146 nos. of All banks having crores rupees deposit and crores rupees credit in the district. 3
