3 Bhutan imports High Speed Diesel, ferrous products, copper wire, processed food, rice, wheat, nuts, spices, flour, machinery items, automobiles, etc. from India Bhutan is a major exporter of electricity to India. The former is one of the leading producers and exporters of renewable energy. Other export goods include minerals such as Ferro-silica, cement and dolomite, spices like cardamom, horticulture products and even seasonal vegetables. Bhutan sources the majority of its import requirements from India. Major Hydropower Projects of Bhutan, supply about 75% of hydroelectricity to India.These projects are financed and technically aided by the government of India. Diplomatic Bhutan and India Relations India and Bhutan have had strong historical and cultural linkages that have led to common prosperity and co-operation for both the nations. These two South-Asian neighbours signed the Treaty of Peace and Friendship on August 8, 1949, in Darjeeling, to maintain peace between them and work on the policy of non-interference in each other s internal issues. It was updated in Bhutan's Stance on India Bhutan has stood by India s claim for a permanent member seat in the UN Security Council and on the Doklam issue. In December 2003 Bhutan launched military Operation All Clear against anti- Indian insurgents from ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam), taking refuge in Bhutan. 3 P a g e

4 The two nations celebrated fifty years of their diplomatic ties on Feb 21, Important Facts about Bhutan Bhutan is the first nation in the world to ban the sale of Tobacco. Bhutan is fully organic; i.e. No chemical fertilizers, pesticides or plastics are used in the country. At a height of 24,840 feet, Gangkhar Puensum is the highest unclimbed mountain in the world and also the highest point in Bhutan. Around 75% of the Bhutanese population practices Buddhism and the remaining follow Hinduism. The word Bhutan means to Land of the Thunder Dragon. It got this name because of the fierce storms that often thunder in from the Himalayas. South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Bhutan measures the quality of its people s lives through GNH. This initiative has been praised by the United Nations as well as many other countries. National Symbols of Bhutan 1.
