3 1 INTRODUCTION Posiva Oy carries out the spent nuclear fuel related research and development in Finland. Work is focused in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki where the underground characterisation facility ONKALO has been constructed since 24. Suomen Malmi Oy (Smoy) carried out mise-a-la-masse ground surface and downhole surveys for Posiva Oy in December 27 and January-March 28 according to the purchase orders and The aim of the surveys was to investigate electrically conducting zones in Olkiluoto investigation site, especially the continuation of the zones to other drillholes and to ground surface. The investigations were carried out in drillholes OL-KR4, OL-KR11, OL-KR27, OL-KR4, OL-KR42 and OL-KR44- OL-KR48 as well as on surface profiles. This report describes field operation and data processing. The quality of the results is shortly analysed and the data presented in the appendices. The survey plan was designed by Turo Ahokas from Pöyry Environment Oy who also supervised the quality control. Arto Kumpulainen (Smoy) coordinated the field work. The report was compiled by Anna-Maria Tarvainen (Smoy) and Mari Lahti from Posiva Oy drafted the example maps.

5 2 EQUIPMENT AND METHODS Mise-a-la-masse measurements can be carried out for example to investigate fractured, crushed and other electrically conducting zones or ore bodies. Measurements are carried out with two current and two potential electrodes. Both ground surface and drillhole measurements are possible. One current electrode is mounted to contact the conducting body and another is placed at remote distance. The voltage distribution is measured around the conducting body using two electrodes of which one is fixed and another mobile. The more specific description of mise-a-la-masse method can be found for example in the previous Posiva Working Reports in relation to mise-a-la-masse surveys (Lehtonen, T. and Heikkinen, E, 24, Lehtonen, T., 26). The drillhole surveys were carried out using Smoy s ABEM Terrameter SAS Equipment. ABEM Terrameter SAS resistivity system consists of a transmitter-receiver unit SAS 3 C and a separate booster SAS 2 for the transmitter. It can be used as a self-potential, a dipole-dipole or a mise-a-la-masse instrument. The output current can be chosen from.2 ma to 2 ma. The input voltage range is from to 5 V. More technical information of the tool is presented in Appendix 2.

7 3 FIELD WORK The field work was carried out within 62 working days in November and December 27 as well as January, February and March 28. The assignment consisted of measurements in 1 drillholes and on 27 ground profiles. The measured drillholes were OL-KR4, OL-KR11, OL-KR27, OL-KR4, OL-KR42 and OL-KR Their locations are presented in Figure 1. The locations of the ground profiles towards west and north from the Korvensuo pond and on investigation trench OL-TK14 are presented in Figure 2. Current electrodes were placed in drillholes OL-KR4, OL-KR11, OL-KR27 and OL-KR4, on the wall of ONKALO tunnel and on two investigation trenches OL- TK-13 and OL-TK14. The duration of the field work is listed in Table 1. The results of the survey are presented in paragraphs and appendices Data was processed and the graphs drawn using Microsoft Excel software. Example maps were compiled using Geosoft Oasis Montaj.

1 Figure 1: Map of the survey area. The drillholes used during the survey campaign are shown in red. The grid on the map is 1 m. Figure 2: Location of the ground profiles (blue lines) and the drillholes (red triangles) used in the survey. The southernmost profiles are 5 m long.
Current electrodes in drillhole OL-KR4 The current groundings in OL-KR4 were mounted on six depths from 8 m down to 759 m and the measurements using these groundings were carried out in six drillholes listed in Table 2. The total survey amount for the OL-KR4 groundings was 491 meters. The results are slightly noisy if they are compared to the measurements from year 26 (Figures 3 and 4). Continuous developing of the investigation site and as an example new power lines are the probable reason for the increased noise. Some potential peaks occur in OL-KR48 data but their source is unknown (Figure 5). Drillhole OL-KR47 was blocked at 91 m depth and therefore the survey finished about 9 m short. For OL- KR27 and OL-KR4 groundings the survey probe reached 925 m depth where the measurement was aborted because of a known fractured zone at 927 m. The results are presented in Appendix 1.1. Also two previously mounted groundings at investigation trench OL-TK13 were used. The locations for these are OL-TK13/1 ( , ) and OL-TK13/2 ( , ). The measurements using OL-KR27 and OL-TK13 groundings were carried out in five drillholes listed in Table 3. The total survey amount was 445 meters. The results are presented in Appendix 1.2. 18 Current electrodes in ONKALO tunnel The groundings were mounted on three different locations on the wall in the ONKALO tunnel at chainages PL285, PL72 and PL159. The measurements using these groundings were carried out in three drillholes listed in Table 4. The total survey amount was 175 meters and the results are presented in Appendix 1.3. The OL-KR4 survey stopped at 765 m depth because of a fractured zone. Also four drillholes listed in Table 6 were surveyed using a surface current electrode placed on investigation trench OL-TK14. The coordinates for the location of the grounding are easting and northing The total downhole survey amount for the OL-TK14 grounding was 346 m. Additionally both the OL-KR4 and OL-TK14 groundings were used for surveying ground profiles in the vicinity of investigation trench OL-TK14 (Figure 6). The profiles were 5 m long with 25 m line spacing and 1 m sampling interval. The measurements with the OL-TK14 grounding were extended from original plan to follow the conductivity anomaly detected in the preliminary results. Table 7 shows that the ground measurements were carried out on seven profiles with the OL-TK14 grounding and on two profiles with OL-KR4 groundings. The results are presented in Appendix 1.4.

17 Figure 7: Surveyed ground profiles using grounding at ONKALO chainage PL Current electrodes in drillhole OL-KR11 The designed survey campaign for the groundings in OL-KR11 is extensive and the measurements were carried out in two phases. In the first phase the groundings were built in every other planned depth starting from the bottom. In the second phase the electrodes were lifted to match the remaining planned grounding depths. The downhole measurements were carried out in eight drillholes and on twenty surface lines. Drillholes are listed in Table 9 and 1. Ground profiles are listed in Tables 11 and 12. The total survey amount were 6735 meters in drillholes and meters on surface lines. The results as graphs are presented in Appendix 1.6. The measurements with the current electrode at 414 meters depth were conducted twice because of a current leakage problem. Figure 8 shows a second potential peak at about 25 m depth that would mean current returning from the grounding to the surveyed drillhole. The cables were checked and a small crack was found. The current leakage distorted the results as shown in the example in Figure 9. The schedule did not allow resurveying the already finished ground profiles but all the downhole surveys were repeated.
18 As the ground surveys progressed an obvious conductivity anomaly was detected north from the Korvensuo pond. Figure 1 illustrates that the anomaly continues further north than the originally planned profiles (L L67928). Therefore for the second phase groundings some profiles were continued to west and additional profiles were surveyed towards north to follow the extent of the anomaly. At the same time few profiles were left out in the south where the results did not show any particular connections. Figure 11 shows that the extent of the conductivity anomaly was covered in the west but in the north the anomaly continues beyond the profiles. The survey was aborted though because of the vicinity of the harbour as well as scheduling. For comparison Figure 12 presents results for a deeper grounding at depth of 895 m; the conductivity anomaly no longer appears for this grounding. 27 23 4 CONCLUSIONS The mise-a-la-masse measurements in Olkiluoto were carried out during November and December 27 as well as January, February and March 28. Turo Ahokas from Pöyry Environment designed the survey scheme and also supervised daily quality control. The survey campaign was completed in planned extent with some minor adjustments. The task consisted of approximately meters of measurements in drillholes and on ground surface. The quality of the data achieved the required level although continuous developing of the site has increased cultural noise in the data. The field crew reported of the observed problems and the affected measurements were repeated in required extent. The mise-a-la-masse results are presented as graphs in Appendices The processed data has been delivered to the client digitally. The draft report was compiled in May 28 and final commented report published in June 28.
