Biodiversity data use by Regional NRM groups The Ins; The Outs; and the Ins-and-Outs Richard McLellan CEO, NACC
NRM on ALA: Data by NRM Regions ALA has great resources (Australian BioBlitz Guidelines, classroom activities ), but I mostly use the state platforms to source my data such as NatureBase.
NRM on ALA : MERIT Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting & Improvement Tool
NRM on ALA: NACC
NRM on ALA: Case-Study NAR Tilapia field surveys 1. Partnership with TAFE. 2. Aquatic vertebrate survey data uploaded onto ALA via MERIT. 3. Data added to the WA Department of Fisheries freshwater fish distribution database. e257b2a7ec43?returnto= d4aa-49d2-a592-71d2af07aa73
NRM on ALA: NACC
The Ins Science informing NRM 1. Underpin regional NRM Strategies & Strategic Plans. 2. Employ biologists / earth scientists Dr Jessica Stingemore, Dr Mic 3. Staff encouraged to keep up-to-date with latest research. 4. Engage with key external experts for science input (e.g., to help guide on-ground investment and strategic plans Ecotones for MCASS). 5. Use ARC-GIS for spatial mapping, with data layers from Parks & Wildlife, DoW, DAFWA, Landgate, etc. 6. Engage with researchers on key issues (e.g., WA Threatened Species Forum). 7. Attend scientific conferences (e.g., SOTM). 8. Chair Sci-napse (Mid West Science Engagement Group).
The Ins Science informing NRM Science data informing strategy MINGENEW EPBC Listed WA Listed Key Regional Assets KALBARRI MORAWA DONGARA PERENJORI THREE SPRINGS CARNAMAH YALGOO NORTHAMPTON NABAWA Tathra National Park COOROW MULLEWA LEEMAN GERALDTON Alexander Morrison National Park Lesueur National Park Watheroo National Park MINGENEW Drovers Cave National Park JURIEN MORAWA DONGARA DALWALLINU PERENJORI Badgingarra National Park THREE SPRINGS CERVANTES CARNAMAH Nambung National Park COOROW LEEMAN MOORA DANDARAGAN DALWALLINU JURIEN WONGAN CERVANTES DANDARAGAN LANCELIN MOORA KOORDA Moore River National Park WONGAN HILLS LANCELIN GOOM DOWERIN WYALKATCHEM GINGIN GOOMALLING GINGIN TOODYAY TOODYAY NORTHAM
The Ins Data informing NRM delivery Biodiversity data is sourced to inform NRM planning, prioritisation, project development and implementation. 1. Accessing & Interpreting complex datasets (e.g., climate modelling, species distribution modelling). 2. Advice on dataset selection (e.g., which climate model to use). 3. Priority areas modelling using biodiversity datasets (e.g., using species distribution, veg complexes, TECs data as part of biodiversity values modelling) 4. Combining biodiversity data with other NRM-rated factors in planning (e.g., Modelling conservation/biodiversity values, and combining them with other NRM values as part of the response to funding opportunities such as the Carbon Farming Initiative). - Simon Neville, Ecotones & Associates - Andrew de Marco, Ironbark Environmental - Piers Higgs, Gaia Resources
The Outs Data from NRM projects Woodland Watch case study Collaborative project: 2 NRM Groups (NACC, Avon). WWF. Parks & Wildlife (WA Herbarium). (Wheatbelt)
Woodland Watch case study Flora surveys: NACC (NAR) & Avon Wheatbelt. Key partner WA Herbarium (Field ID, vouchering, physical and online data management). 238 sites surveyed. 8,872 specimens collected. 12 undescribed / new taxa. 88 DRF / Priority taxa. Lots of new data; 100s of range extensions. Recommended WA Wheatbelt Woodlands to be listed as TEC.
The Ins & Outs Data from NRM The Desert Rangelands Project 6 Native Title areas in remote desert country in NW WA. Traditional Owners from the Birriliburu, Martu, Ngururrpa, Spinifex, Pilki and Yilka Native Title areas involved.
The Ins & Outs Data from NRM The Desert Rangelands Project Parks & Wildlife Scientific technical advice, including data management and analysis. CSIRO Traditional fire management research (into which the Desert Rangelands project provided information).
The Ins & Outs Data from NRM The Desert Rangelands Project Incorporating government agency fauna surveying methodology with Traditional Aboriginal tracking (and ways of protecting and managing country). Involved: Fauna monitoring; Fire management; Watersource and Weed monitoring. Strong partnership approach Rangelands NRM, Parks & Wildlife, CSIRO, and representative groups for Traditional Owners Pila Nguru, Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa and Central Desert Native Title Services. Collected stories on places of special cultural heritage. Traditional Owners considered data sensitivity and identified the information that could be released publically. Fauna data to be lodged on NatureMap themepage & ALA.
The Ins & Outs Data from NRM The Desert Rangelands Project Large amount of information collected (e.g., critical weight range threatened fauna; native game; invasive species; water quality; fire behaviour). Data initially stored in an Access database (for each Traditional Owner group). Comprehensive Data Management Plan and data sharing protocols developed and agreed. Data fields (e.g., date of survey, type of animal, type of sighting, location) assigned an open or private status for either public access, or not for public disclosure (culturally sensitive).
Desert Rangelands Project Desert Rangelands Naturebase Themepage: Description of each Traditional Owners Country (and their connection to it). Quotes from Traditional Owners/project partners (and links to interviews). Major findings of the fauna data (e.g., species, locations, abundance, threats). Key species occurrence maps (e.g., bilbies, bustard, great desert skink, hill kangaroo, cat, fox). Key water sources (e.g., condition, quality, photos). Profiles of project partners.
Key Messages 1. Biodiversity data paramount. 2. Use of established state databases first (linked to ALA). 3. Collaborative partnerships NRM groups, agencies, ENGOs, community groups, individuals. 4. Key roles for Citizen Science.
