FIRST ANOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS EASTERN AND SOUTHERN AFRICA ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY CONFERENCE (ESAECC) AND THE 10 TH THEORETICAL CHEMISTRY CONFERENCE IN AFRICA (TCCA) VENUE: University of Venda, Thohoyandou, South Africa. DATES: 6 11 April 2014 THEME CHEMISTRY FOR DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY IN AFRICA B A C K G R O U N D TCCA is reaching the 10 th conference a milestone to celebrate. ESAECC has been conducted jointly with TCCA for a number of years. The joint conferences have attracted researchers from Africa and beyond and provided ideal ground for exchanges of ideas and experiences. Their major objectives are the following: To bring together African scientists to exchange ideas and research results in the fields of theoretical/computational chemistry and of environmental chemistry. To promote research capacity building for theoretical/computational chemistry, as a scarce skill area in the continent. To foster collaboration among African scientists and between African scientists and scientists from other continents.
2 CALL FOR ABSTRACTS We are inviting you to join us by submitting an oral or poster paper for presentation at the conference. We also encourage you to invite your colleagues who are interested in these fields to submit papers for presentation. This is the opportunity of a lifetime to come to a gathering of international speakers on wide ranging issues related to Environmental Chemistry and Theoretical Chemistry. Abstracts should have the following format: Margins: 3 cm, top, bottom, right and left. Title: font, Arial; font size 14; uppercase; bold; centred. Authors: font, Arial; font size 12; italics; centred. The name of the presenting author, if submitting with co-authors, is underlined. The institution, postal address and of author(s) are written under the list of authors. Text: font, Arial; font size 12; justified. Not exceeding 300 words. Abstracts should be submitted to the Conference Secretariat by . The deadline for abstract submission is March 15, TOPICS Environmental Chemistry Theoretical Chemistry. Environmental analysis, Atmospheric chemistry, Soil Chemistry, Mining and the environment Surface and ground water quality, Impact of Industry and Agriculture on the environment, Fate and speciation of metals in biological and environmental samples, Fate and persistence of agricultural chemicals in the environment. Industrial wastes Computational study of molecules Computer-aided design of industrially-relevant substances Computer-aided design of environmentally benign substances Drug design Nanoscience Study of molecules in solution Interfaces of theoretical/computational chemistry with other areas of chemistry Teaching of theoretical chemistry in African universities.

6 BRIEF HISTORY OF TCCA / ESAECC TCCA started as Theoretical Chemistry Workshops in Africa (TCWA), initiated by Prof. Geoffrey Kamau, of the University of Nairobi, and Prof. Liliana Mammino, to promote the development of theoretical/computational chemistry in Africa, where it is still a scarce skill area, absent from many countries despite its importance in fields like drug-design, the design of new substances, and the new fast-growing field of nanosciences. As participation grew, they turned into conferences (TCCA), still maintaining the fundamental character of meetings meant to promote the development of theoretical/computational chemistry in Africa. The Eastern and Southern Africa Environmental Chemistry Conferences (ESAECC) started being conducted jointly to TCCA at their TCCA 4 th edition (2001). The previous conferences were held as follows: Nairobi (Kenya), 2226 February 1995 Nairobi (Kenya), 2529 August 1996 Nairobi (Kenya), 26 November 1998 Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), 59 November 2001 Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania), 15 December 2003 Windhoek (Namibia), 59 December 2005 Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe), 37 December 2007 Mombasa (Kenya), 59 October 2009 Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), 5 7 October 2011
