1 Annex 7 The Chemists Online Self-study Award Scheme 2017 Aims / Objectives This is to invite secondary schools to participate in the captioned Award Scheme. Details 2. The Chemists Online Self-study Award Scheme (COSAS) 2017 is jointly organised by Hong Kong Virtual University and the Science Education Section of the Education Bureau. The aim of the Award Scheme is to enhance scientific literacy of senior secondary students by providing them with an exposure to more advanced chemistry online lectures. 3. Details of the Award Scheme and the application form are provided in Appendices 7a and 7b respectively. 4. In order to help schools understand more about the Award Scheme, an information website and an online briefing session are available to introduce the e-learning platform, the contents of the seminars and the role of the teacher-in-charge. For details, please refer to the following webpage 5. Secondary schools interested in nominating their students to participate in the captioned scheme are requested to complete the Application Form at Appendix 7b and return it by fax (Fax no.: ). 2 Appendix 7a The Chemists Online Self-study Award Scheme Introduction The Chemists Online Self-study Award Scheme (COSAS) 2017 is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Virtual University and the Science Education Section of the Education Bureau. The aim of the Award Scheme is to enhance scientific literacy of senior secondary students by providing them with an exposure to more advanced chemistry online lectures. In the 2016/17 school year, 23 online seminars will be organised to cover a wide range of chemistry topics, including synthetic polymers, gastronomy, nanomaterials and food chemistry, etc. All the seminars were delivered by experts from local universities. The contents of the seminars were designed to link with the Chemistry curriculum and further extend the reach to the latest advances in Chemistry. 2. Aims - To enhance students scientific literacy - To encourage students to take initiative to learn and pursue more knowledge - To cultivate students interest in Chemistry - To facilitate students to understand the interconnection between science, technology, society and environment 3. Target participants and enrolment Students taking Senior Secondary Chemistry or Combined Science (Chemistry Part) are welcome to join the Scheme. Application should be made via schools. Each school has to submit one application form only. 4. Contents of the seminars The seminars will be disseminated through an e-learning Open Platform (URL: which is developed and hosted by Hong Kong Virtual University (HKVU). The participating students will receive an invitation from HKVU, and students are required to register an account to access and attend the seminars online and to engage in the online exercises. The seminars will be released in 3 batches. The first batch will be released on 15 December 2016 and the whole Award Scheme will be completed on 31 August 2017.

Criteria for the awards To accomplish the assigned tasks for one seminar, students are expected to: - study the pre-seminar material which explains some of the chemistry knowledge and concepts involved in the seminar - attend the online seminar - complete the online assessment items The following awards will be given to the participating students: Award Number of seminars completed within the designated period Bronze 3 Silver 6 Gold 9 Platinum 12 Diamond 18 Certificates will be awarded accordingly. 6. Teacher s role The teacher-in-charge will receive an invitation from the HKVU, teachers are required to register an account and granted rights to access the seminars. Teacher will receive information on students progress of work for review regularly. By the end of the Scheme, the teachers are required to check the attainments of their students and confirm the lists of students who have fulfilled the award requirements. An online briefing session is available to introduce the e-learning platform, the contents of the seminars and the role of the teacher-in-charge. 5 Appendix 8a The 16th Inter-School Stamp Exhibits Competition-Guidance Notes Details of Participation The Competition is divided into three categories based on the school levels below. Details of the maximum number of frames in each entry for the three categories are as follows: Category A: Primary 6 or below (1-3 frames) Category B: Secondary 1 to Secondary 3 (1-5 frames) Category C: Secondary 4 or above (1-5 frames) The maximum number of participants for each entry is 4. For each frame submitted, it should have a capacity of 16 (4 x 4) standard size album pages, with size 23cm x 29cm as specified. Hongkong Post will sponsor each entry 20 pieces of standard size album pages and 1 pack of stamp mounts for each frame. Participants should organise their stamps on a thematic basis and send their entries together with narratives about their collections. Awards & Prizes A Champion, a 1st Runner-up, a 2nd Runner-up and 10 Merit Awardees will be chosen from each category. The awardees will receive the following prizes: Individual Awards: Champion: One trophy, HK$3,000 book coupon, one Serviced First Day Cover 1st Runner-up: One trophy, HK$2,000 book coupon, one Serviced First Day Cover 2nd Runner-up: One trophy, HK$1,000 book coupon, one Serviced First Day Cover Merit Prizes (10 prizes): One certificate, HK$100 book coupon, one Serviced First Day Cover School Awards: Champion: One trophy, one 2016 Prestige Annual Stamp Album (Deluxe Version) 1st Runner-up: One trophy, one 2016 Prestige Annual Stamp Album (Deluxe Version) 2nd Runner-up: One trophy, one 2016 Prestige Annual Stamp Album (Deluxe Version) Merit Prizes (10 prizes): One 2016 Annual Stamp Pack The Most Supporting School Award: For each category, the school with the largest number of exhibits submitted will be awarded one certificate, one 2016 Prestige Annual Stamp Album (Ordinary Version) and one 2016 Annual Stamp Pack. If more than one school have submitted the same largest number of entries, the winner will be the one with the largest number of frames. To encourage active participation, each participating student will receive a presentation pack of the special stamp issue and a certificate as a token.
